Thanks. Any other advice? Where can I find a place that's less than $800/ month in rent there? If I can split that amount I should be fine.
I don't know where you want to be exactly in New York but $800/month seems pretty low to me, for anywhere in the city. You should just look up apartments online.

Going back to my previous question, where should I look for a roommate in NYC?

Also, I work at Walgreens. Should I try to get transferred to a store in NYC so I can have employment when I go there?

You would be nuts to move to NYC with $1000 in the bank and no job lined up.

Hell, you might be nuts anyway. :P

Honestly though, this might be a thread-worthy question. "I want to move to NYC, give me advice New Yorkers" sort of thing.

I'm in Canada and we just went to the grocery store. While there, I asked, "can I have a pound of American cheese?"

They looked at me like I was crazy. I thought American cheese was American cheese, no matter what country you're in.

So what do they call American cheese in Canada?

Maybe they didn't know what a pound was....

Yellow plastic.

My understanding is American cheese is American cheese everywhere, it's just a diluted type of cheddar IIRC. Maybe they would know what "Kraft Singles" are?

(And then get Velveeta brand cause it's better)

Good point. You should just ask for the cheese that comes on Kraft Dinner and they will know what you are talking about.

Maybe I should sell my car. I don't really need one in NYC, do I?

Does it help that I have an aunt in the Bronx? I could crash at her apartment until I get my living arrangements in order. My sister did that.

Are you close with her? I would recommend staying with her for a bit, maybe a week or two or more while looking for a possible job/apartment and just get a feel for what living "in the city" would be like and if it is really for you before fully committing and selling off your car and everything.

With only $1000 in the bank, and based on the tone of your posts, it sounds like you might be about to make a rash decision you could come to regret.

I don't wanna make a rash decision, that's for sure. I really need to move out of my parents' house, but I want to think things through first.

Well, what about simply moving out of your parents' place, rather than jumping in at the deep end? Canvas your friends to see if any of them are looking for a roommate, or they know someone who is, look around for decent apartments in your local area, etc. No need to move all the way to NYC right off the bat.

That's exactly what I did and they still were confused. They were like, "well, the Kraft singles are down that-a-way".

I have no friends that need a roommate, and I do feel like getting the hell out of this state.

If NYC is too expensive, I'm more than willing to reevaluate where to go.

Who was Devolution and what did she do to become so well known? Honest question, I've seen it pop up in a few threads from a while ago, and I'm curious as to what happened.

Well her tag says "Ruining Afternoons" so that must have something to do with it.

Well she is dating Timedog who is a GAF celeb, but Devo seems to of calmed him down, he was quiet the joke poster, like blame space, and posters that are known to be girls will usually be extra popular by default.

But really shes just a really good poster, usually sensible, fair and insightful. She is popular in her own right even if you were to take away the Timedog and female aspect.

Does Mircosoft still have a student discount program for Windows 7??

I thought for sure I paid around 30 bucks a couple of years ago.

I'm putting together an old laptop for my son, he's in 6th grade now and it's pretty much a must.

Anybody know of any good deals on windows 7. The laptop had XP originally then I put the beta program for windows 7 on it ages ago. I haven't used that laptop in nearly a year but last time I did it said something about 'unauthorized version of windows' and I don't want to give it to my kid until I get that fixed.

Halp GAF.

I need to learn about probability but I need a better resource than my class and "litterature". Any good newbie friendly tutorial sites or something out there? :S

A while back I heard (or read) about another term for hell banning. (A hell ban is where the banned person doesn't get a notice that they're banned and can continue to post, but no one can see their posts.) This other term may have been someone's name and I believe had an origin in something completely unrelated, possibly WW2. It may also be a British term.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So I was watching Piers Morgan's interview with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and despite the language barrier, it was conducted pretty smoothly. Do they have fast translators behind the scenes that interpret nearly simultaneously with what is being spoken?

Could it have anything to do with locked-in syndrome? It's the condition where you're paralysed to the point where you can't communicate with the outside world in any way. There are supposed to be some cases with WW1 survivors getting this, there's a movie that Metallica owns the rights to if you're ready to lurk around a little.

In my day we called this shunning.

If it's a name you're looking for, perhaps something from mythology? Cassandra or Tacita/Larunda/Muta? Cassandra could speak but no one would believe anything she said, while Tacita was mute.

Hmm I don't think either of those are what I was looking for, but thanks.

Hello GAF,

I'm having a problem with streaming video. Certain sites like YouTube aren't a problem, but on sites like GameTrailers, Penny Arcade TV, NBCNews etc. I'm having extreme difficulty getting videos to load. Either they take several minutes to load (I timed an Extra Credits video recently, it took six minutes and seven seconds to load), or like some videos on IGN, they never load no matter how long I leave them. It's really weird, because some sites are fine, like YouTube and CNN video. I've used SpyBot and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to look for a problem and I can't find anything. This problem is VERY recent, it started late last week. I first assumed I was just having some internet issues or that the servers were weird, but it's persisted for days now and I think there has to be a problem.

Any ideas on what I need to do to remedy the problem?

EDIT: I use Firefox, but I did try installing Chrome to see if anything would change, it did not. :(

I'm seeking someone proficient in statistics and hopefully familiar with Libreoffice/Openoffice Calc. Having trouble determining when to use normal distribution to remove outliers.

If a car (like a mid-size sedan) ran over my foot, would it do any serious damage? Would it be extremely painful, or just a "shit that kind of hurt" level of pain?

Does speed matter? Like a 5 mph roll over my toes vs. a really slow roll?

Anyone have firsthand experience with this?

Hasn't happened to me, but there are a lot of factors. You could walk away with barely any damage or a permanently messed-up foot. I wouldn't try it.

it's very likely that you'll break your foot if a car drives over it slowly. I know someone who had her dad back up the car over her foot, breaking it.

Youtube and IGN aren't using the same video player afaik and probably not the same file format either. Have you tried Explorer? Sometimes youtube just stops working for me in firefox for no apparent reason. I can't even see the play button etc and rebooting firefox doesn't help but Explorer is just fine. Maybe do a reinstall of your browsers and flash in general? I feel kinda stupid for even suggesting that xD Are you behind routers etc?

I did try Chrome, but not Explorer, I'll try that next I guess. I did try launching Firefox in reset but that didn't fix, I'll try completely uninstalling.

I am behind a router, but I have been ever since I built the computer 2 years ago and never had this problem. There is always the last resort of back up all file and reformat, but it's a pain. >_>

But thanks for the suggestions. :-)

Something that's always bugged me about the movie Goodfellas.

What was the thing with Jimmy sending Karen down to that corner warehouse to get some dresses? Then she sees the two burly dudes in the dimly lit room, no dresses in sight, and she turns around and hoofs it.

Do we think Jimmy was trying to set up something malicious there, or was it just Karen's paranoia messing with her head?

I've used my google account to log in to imgur.com, but it's not working now, using it now treats me as a new member trying to log in with Openid, like my old account isn't there anymore. Anyone know what the issue could be? Never had Openid simply "lose" an account like this.

There's a large folder of GAF .gifs I can't access now. :(

Let us know :) The latest flash beta version kept on crashing incredibly often, maybe it's something like that.

Well, I just tried it. Sadly it's no good. Still problems. I guess I'll be prepping my computer for complete reformat this weekend. :/

I had real bad Flash problems across all browsers on two separate computers after some beta of theirs a while back. I just uninstalled it and tried installing past versions until it was stable again.

Here's the uninstall for flash http://download.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/support/uninstall_flash_player.exe

Flash 11.1 worked best for me http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/installers/archive/fp_11.1.102.63_archive.zip (Larger download since it has some debugger bits in as well)
Just open up the '11_1r102_63_32bit' folder and run 'flashplayer11_1r102_63_win_32bit.exe'

It depends on the foot, the car, the tyre, the speed the car is moving, the footwear, the surface the foot is on, and whether the wheel in question is under power.

How long is a piece of string?

Hm... I uninstalled Flash and reinstalled the above but sadly I'm having the same problem. Something just isn't right. It's like it's either not loading the movie at all, or something is actively blocking me access. It's weird, I'll go to NBCNews.com and click a link. It'll play the ad perfectly fine, but then it just spins and spins on the "Now Loading" screen and then suddenly it's like, done. It just stops and acts like I've watched it.

What's that word, it's something like "cooural" as in grip it, and smother it - I can say it, just can't figure out the exact spelling & definition
