No, it's quite different from algebra. Pretty sure math terms are universal. Except that the UK uses "maths".

Calculus & Algebra are different things, although whomever is expecting you to be able to answer the question should have explained the method to you.

I'm dense with maths so I don't know anymore :(

OK one more q. In my crypto class (luckily not that much maths), my lecturer said "10 ^ 6 roughly 2 ^ 20"

he went onto some explanation, but I am wondering how he worked it out so quickly? 10 ^ x is easy to work out, but what's the simplest way of working out any other value to the power of?

I think I need to do a crash course in this

My HPs hd failed

1. What new hd should I get (preferably from newegg or amazon)
2. I think windows came installed in a partitioned drive on my pc from the manufacturer so I should be able to reinstall from that and not have to create a system recovery disc now right?

First check what type of HDD you have. The things you want to know are the connector-type (SATA-300/SATA-600/IDE etc.) and the bay-size (2/3.5"). Based on what is most common this baby here should do the trick.

If there was a recovery partition then it was most likely on your failed HDD. So you can probably kiss that goodbye.

So guys, a quick question.

We're converting my home movies to DVDs and such as we speak, but a lot of members of the family want them on their HDDs.

Is there a program or something where I can nominate a "master library" and as soon as I plug in a hard drive it will automatically sync whatever hasn't already been synced? So I don't have to manually transfer them all across.

(We do a lot of things as a family, have a lot of photos and videos, and at least five different people who want copies, so a solution like this would be so good for me)

Why do people cover their license plate when posting pics of their cars?

Don't people see your license every day when you drive?
It might also help prevent cloning.
If you own a red ford focus, a thief who's stolen a red ford focus can copy your number plate, and the car wouldn't appear stolen (at least by plate search, and you'd also get all the speeding/parking tickets).

Did this shirt style/meme originate with this band's shirt/memorabilia?

Stumbled on some bozo's Facebook page, dumb fucker left it open to the public.

This piece of shit is spewing all kinds of anti homosexual horseshit, the trips to hell, you get it.

I'd really, really, really love to see some justice, like say call his place of employment and let them know they've employed a bigoted piece of shit and that they're losing business as a result.

my question: Should I post a link here on Gaf or will I get banned?

Internet detectivery is generally frowned upon here.

May have been this one
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Century_of_the_Self

Edward Bernays got women in 1920's to light up Lucky Strike cigarettes at a women's right parade to use them as Torches of Freedom, fighting against the taboo of women smoking in public.

They also had adverts using Amelia Earheart

If thats not the right documentary then the other information should help you track it down =]
The Century of the Self is the one! Thanks! And yeah, Bernays! Couldn't remember his name either :lol

On a Mac; what is the best, free way to convert video files to different types?

If it helps, the end goal is getting .wmv, .mp4, .mpg, .avi and .mov files playing on a (new) iPad. I realize .mp4's are supposed to be the preferred file type, but even these .mp4s I have aren't being recognized by iTunes.

Thanks!

edit-

Had Handbrake suggested before, but was under the impression the free download had a limit of like 5-10 converts? Is that still the way to go?

I have a Samsung hd642jj. According to newegg it's sata 3.0 gb and 3.5"

Then the one I posted will suit you fine. Though the prices of HDDs are currently rather high because of the recents floods (to compare before the floods I got the same one for 2/3rd of the current price) so you might want to get a smaller one if you don't require 1TB.

300 posts and 3 months

Thanks.

Someone should make a HD collection thread, I recently bought the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection and it has completely changed my opinion of collections, so it would be useful to have a dedicated thread showing what collections are available and so people can share their experiences with them in one place.

Hello boys and girls.

I have a PDF from which I wish to extract several pages so that I may have them on their own in a completely separate PDF.

Is there a good free app that anyone would recommend for this purpose please?

A free online editor would be even better!

Thanks :).

I need someone to calculate this out for me because I'm too bad at math to know myself. If I have a 74.50% in a class and the final is worth 30% of our final grade what is the lowest score I can get on it to pass? I'm assuming a really high 60 percent.

If i did this correctly, you get 52.15% if you get 0 on the exam.

So... Make sure you attend it and pass the exam if the course requires a pass on the final for a pass on the course

Assuming 60% is the passing grade: 26.17% is the minimum needed

Taking it step by step:
60 = ((74.50*7) + (X*3)) / 10
600 = (74.50*7) + (X*3)
(X*3) = 600 - (74.50*7)
X = (600 - (74.50*7)) / 3

edit: Beaten like a ginger stepchild. I need to stop opening stuff in tabs.

Thanks everybody. Also, you were not beaten since you now have shown me the formula to solve this on my own. The passing grade is 70% just for the record.

I was tempted to make a new thread, as this has been driving me crazy, but the stupid questions thread will suffice for now.

I bought a 40 inch LED HDTV Samsung last June:
http://www.samsung.com/us/video/tvs/UN40D6000SFXZA

Everything has been fine, up until recently.

I can try to upload a picture, but it's pretty hard to capture on camera, so I'll try my best to explain. On white and/or solid colored backgrounds, I can see black shadowing up on the top of the screen. It isn't your typical ghosting or flashlighting I grew to "love" with LCD screens, this looks.. different. It looks almost like steaks of blackness or smudge marks. The only thing I can compare it to most, is that it almost looks like pressure marks, when you press down on a screen too hard and it leaves a permanent smudge. I didn't notice it in the first few months of using it, and I've taken care of it, so it didn't come from me.

Through some Googling, I thought it might be dusty/dirty, and the inside screens need to be cleaned. The TV is still under warranty with Samsung, so I opened up a ticket request and they stated it's impossible for them to clean the insides of the TV. It's difficult for me to explain what the problem is without looking like a complete freak.

I also have a warranty through Best Buy, but not sure what avenues I can go with that over this problem.

But we're all anal here, aren't we? Help me GAF. :(

I'm using one of the iMacs in the school library and all of a sudden the keyboard doesn't work. I tried unplugging and plugging it back in. Makes no difference. All the other computers are taken.

What do I do now?

Hi, everybody! It's...me

I was absent from my flat for almost 2 months. Just now I checked my land line phone for missed calls and I have a weird one:

00416054772

I don't know if my phone lists all the numbers, i think there is a possibility of missing digits at the end. A brief search implies 41 is a Swiss calling code. Can anyone help on the origin and location of this phone number?

My company wants to set up some sort of online calendar to sync 50+ employees to so we're all aware what events/meetings we have coming up. What the best/easiest/cheapest way to do this?

Some more information about the current assest of the company would be nice. But I assume that everyone has a company email-address along the line of birbo@company.com.

If so would the Microsoft Outlook Calendar not be an option. We use it at my workplace to organize just about every event and meeting.

What does a back tacker do? It's an occupation listed in the Onion American Voices http://www.theonion.com/articles/positive-affirmation-makes-one-feel-worse,28192/

I googled and first few links do nothing and I'm too lazy to dig deeper.

Ok, I found this job description but I don't understand it. Are they making cement shoes?
Inserts cement covered counter between lining and shoe upper to prepare upper for further lasting operations: Places counter on wire screen, dips screen in liquid cement, and drains excess cement from counter

Can websites, particularly image hosting, tell if a visitor has screen capped while content is being viewed? If so, do laws prohibit such actions, even if for personal use? Is it even worth worrying about?

If I understand the question correctly (Can a website see whether you made a screen capture of the site) then yes. Or atleast it should be possible to capture whether the visitor pressed Printscreen while on the site using some javascript. Is doing that legal? I'm not certain but even if it is I don't see why you should worry about it. It's not like they're going to throw you into jail just because you saved a particular site. And even if they did sue, how would they go about proving that you didn't "accidentally" pressed printscreen?

What's the best way to deal with a bit of lower back pain (without seeing a specialist)?

Spread some heat rub on it. I prefer Tiger Balm. Smells like spicy death but damn does it work well for just about any muscle ache.

It depends what you do with it but you could potentially be infringing their copyright.

Ordinarily no. It might be possible with plugins, but that would be outlandish, and you'd have to install them anyway. So just assume no.

It depends on the terms of service, the country the servers are located in, the country you are located in, the country the proprietor of the servers is located in, the specific site, stuff like that. You could make an argument for both sides most of the time. So it depends on the context.

Just use common sense, and you'll be okay. For example, it is not cool to screenshot a website to then use the content for making game textures without even bothering to look at the terms of service, contacting the site, blah. But it obviously is okay to screenshot a Facebook site so that you can refer to the screenshot in the context of a not-for-profit scientific study.

Noone would ever expect anyone to follow through with such lawsuits, mind you. But it's not unheard of. Site owners that write Javascript to try to prevent rightclicks: Stay the fuck away from those guys, they're insane.

If you used a software program to take a screenshot instead of using the key, I think that'd keep them from being able to tell in all cases short of a virus or something.

In any case I wouldn't worry about it at all, unless you plan on taking credit for their artwork and/or putting it in a product to sell.

Would someone be able to list some good bullet point features that android for tablets has? Preferably things that are common among the most popular tabs like the galaxy and the transformers. Also things that non-tech people could appreciate.

Customization would be the selling point for me. It's fun and doesn't involve jailbreaking or whatever. Widgets are awesome. And the Play Store is full of all sorts of crazy shit to play with.

Plus, be extra careful with your posture and how you move so you don't make it worse and also to minimise the discomfort while it sorts itself out.

Furthermore, keep moving and going about your normal, daily business. The advice used to be to rest up and take to bed but nowadays the medical advice is to keep active [within reason].

However, if it is anything more than a slight sprain/soreness/tenderness, seek medical attention. Backs are not something to trifle with.

Hope it clears up soon :).

I'm looking to buy a netbook for my mother. Just for internet use. I've been told to avoid 10 inch screens. Is the aspire one 722 (11.6) a good choice? Any other recommendations?
