Bake-Neko Arc

Timeskip? Huh.

This arc felt like a bit of a departure from the rest in this series and not just because of the change of setting but it felt more like a traditional detective story in how all the pieces were slowly connected. At least it felt more so than the rest of the series anyhow. It did a great job setting up the story and introducing each character and how they're all connected with the mystery. It's a slow burn but remained pretty intense through out. There's some rather disturbing imagery layered through out the episodes which, for me, made this one of the more darker stories in the series.

I don't really think this was my favorite arc though. Maybe I just wasn't as engaged with the overall story to begin with or something but it felt a bit drawn out by the end of episode 11. Nevertheless the storytelling was as solid as ever and the resolution was good.
Pretty sad fate for Ichikawa but at least justice was dealt to the mayor and the reporter. The last scene with the other passengers showing up together in remembrance of her was really nice
. Overall a good story and a nice way to end the show.

Overall

I honestly don't know where to start here.

No doubt about it, this show is unique. From the art style, to the direction, to the characters, there's really nothing else like it as far as I've seen. It took an episode or two to really enjoy the show but after I started to settle into it, I really got hooked. The Ukiyo-e type of art style is definitely one of the most note-worthy things about the show. The traditional look gives the show a chance to convey some really striking and memorable imagery. I love that it uses the style to help present the stories in such a different fashion. Some character designs aren't the prettiest to look at but that helps make each character all the more memorable and important to their own individual story. Each environment is unique and gorgeous to look at. This anime definitely uses color to its full potential.

The sound is one thing I'd like to touch on. Whenever I think "sound" in anime, I immediately think of the OST but that's not so much the case for this show. The show uses traditional sounds to emphasize the unsettling atmosphere and to build an intense vibe in certain scenes. The music is usually pretty subdued for the most part through the show but whenever an important scene begins, the music kicks in at just the right moment.

There's quite a bit of symbolism through the series and makes a lot of the stories and their resolutions rather ambiguous. Some arcs can be on the more abstract side as well but it also allows the viewer to draw their own conclusions at times which I appreciate. There's a lot that this show does right but to me what it does best is create a certain atmosphere and that right there is something very important to me when it comes to certain types of media. This isn't a typical mystery/supernatural anime. The art design, the sound direction, and the storytelling all come together to form something very unique and memorable.

Fantastic show. The Medicine Seller is an absolutely enjoyable protagonist to watch on his ventures and many of the characters he meets along the way are entertaining in their own way.

So I'll probably start Ayakashi later this week. This show reminded me I also need to finish Mushishi as well.

Between this, Knk 5 and Kuuchuu Buranko I've been watching too much good stuff lately. I should go balance that out with some Kono Naka ni Hitori, Imouto ga Iru!

Why Ryuji on screenshot above looks like middle-age women?
Kinda spoilers, happened before Shana III, but it's expected you know it going in.

Yuji merged with the Snake of the Festival, a god of Guze, the God of Creation. This granted him near-unlimited power and changed his appearance.

So is shana actually a good show and/or LN?

I recall liking the premise of the movie.
Decent first season, awful second season, good third season.

JC Staff fucked up with S2 but they did a better job with S3. Some budget constraints aside, it was a fairly accurate portrayal of the LNs.

The LNs are great on their own. A lot of adorableness of Shana herself is lost on the anime because of the art style, the LNs do that much better.

Really had some enjoyable moments thanks to Yume, and also without him, Ooshima is really likeable protagonist to be honest. Guess its personality and how he really gets along with everyone in the Food Club as well as out of it. I also enjoyed some of the food club antics
the speech as well as their making stuff
.

Oh hey, I didn't notice that this popped up: http://www.geass.jp/akito/world_column.html

I'm bored, so I translated it.

The calendar used in the European Union used the Revolution Year as a dating system. In "Akito the Exiled", the story takes placed in the Revolution Year 228.

This new dating system originated from the French Revolution in 1789. In that year, the people of France rose up against the existing Ancien Régime system, and in 1790 they reset the calander as Revolution Year 1.

The wave of revolution started in France spread like a storm throughout all of Europa. But just before it crossed over the strait of Dover, the British imperial family decided to move their capital to a new continent. This resulted in the birth of the Holy Britannia Empire.

Due to the export of revolution and war throughout Europa, a man named Napoleon managed to seize much power and authority. Alas, the people feared that he would become another tyrant, and they put him to death. This was the turning point of Europa's history, and with this the E.U became a democratic region. Unlike the aristocratic values of the Holy Britannia Empire and the Chinese Federation, the E.U. would no longer value birth right in governance, and no one would be born with a claim to authority.

After this radical social change, some nobles in Britannia who disagreed with the dated system of rule in their own empire would defect to the E.U., seeking refudge as exiles. Layla Malkal is a daughter of one such noble family living in exile.

Furthermore, there is Euro Britannia. Made up of groups of nobles within the Holy Britannia Empire who have roots in old Europa, this group seeks to reclaim their ancestral territories within the E.U. by means of force. Since Emperor Charles is occupied with the events in Area 11, the conflict in the E.U. is left largely to this Euro Britannia group to take charge of.

The capital of E.U. is Paris, led by three presidents, and managed by the Council of Forty - all democratically elected by the people. The Council of Forty is based on a system established after the Revolution, and currently has over 200 members. With a declaration of war from the Holy Britannia Empire, the Council of Forty has to take charge of national defense and military matters as well.

Unfortunately, the problems of a democratic government has rearched a terminal stage in the E.U., and within the Council of Forty, populism is spreading and becoming a serious issue.

The episode was all about Reika. Not bad in showing her will to play soccer.

Ginga e Kickoff 13

Oh my God this piece of shit referee. Talking about fair play (there is nothing unfair in what the triplets did in their previous match for fucks sake) and then doing bad calls on purpose and not blowing the whistle on purpose? Talk about a shitty piece of shit scumbag.
Serve him right that the coach and the triplet are that good, and they even managed to poke some fun at him.

Eureka Seven AO 13

Ao's outfit change was nice, hopefully theres fanart of it eventually. Truth was just plain cool too.

I wonder the significance or rather why Gazelle is so into the Eureka, that part with him an Ao was pretty emotional, or rather, really for Ao. And lastly, if Secrets are truly not the enemies, and Truth displays some ability of control over Secrets, couldnt he be their ally?

So is shana actually a good show and/or LN?

I recall liking the premise of the movie.

The first season is decent, but that's pretty much it. Season 2 is full of filler and a never ending love triangle. Season 3 has its moments, but its mostly a terribly paced mess filled with awful new characters that are never properly developed or introduced. It's my understanding that season 2 diverged from the LN, and that's why they ended up cramming season 3 full of events and characters that were never properly set up.

Thanks for this ducky. Seems like an interesting take on an alternative history, much more than what little I remember from the original Code Geass (although a quick peruse of the Geass Wikia suggests a staggering amount of background information that I obviously didn't care about!)

The Council of Forty refers to the Quarantia in Venice. I'm not quite sure why they'd give it that name and then say it has 200 members, but it's not real so what do I care?

Sadly, I won't have this reaction because I haven't bothered to 'wade through hours of awful shit'.

Natsuyuki Rendezvous ep 2
This show is a rollercoster ride of emotions. My heart fluttered when Rokka went for a tease on Hazuki -> Smh on Hazuki's blabbermouth -> tug on my heart at both men not being to do anything for Rokka. *sheds a tear* This show is beautiful.

Not bad, but not that great either. It was a lot more brutal than I had remembered. The script is sooooo cliched, though I liked the
drug aspect. I wish it had been expanded upon, since it didn't seem to have any negative side effects apart from dependency.
On a visual level it doesn't look much better than a TV production, particularly the foreground art. The CG was integrated very well I thought, one area where it is much better than a TV production. I really did not like the digital effects (motion blur, snow, smoke, etc.) used during the fights, hampered my enjoyment of them very much so. It's a shame, because the actual animation is quite good. Then there is the sound design, which I thought was too exaggerated.
The kid should have died during this scene, going by the sound effect. It sounded like his head exploded.
The musical score really grated on my nerves, way too pronounced and repetitive. The piece played during the final battle was unnecessary.
I don't know why no-one has responded to this post. Perhaps, upon reading it, duckroll's brain shut down, especially in regard to your comments about the music played during the finale.

To get more specific:
I really did not like the digital effects (motion blur, snow, smoke, etc.) used during the fights, hampered my enjoyment of them very much so. It's a shame, because the actual animation is quite good.
Those 'digital effects' such as snow are animation. In particular, the team took months getting the show correct, so that at lower altitudes there's less snow than at higher altitudes.
At this rate, Accel World definitely needs representation in the OT2 title. Lol.

This is all your fault.

Broadly speaking.

Actually, I based my translation for Council of Forty on the Council of Ten, which is another historical governing system in Venice: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Council_of_Ten

It seems to make more sense, since that's actually a governing body. The concept of 10s and 40s and so on are probably all based on research in historical Venice politics though. The text suggests to me that "The Council of Forty" is the name of the organizational body, which is a relic of the post-revolution reform, and even though it has expanded in capacity since then, but the name remained.

This coach is great. Who cares if it's an own goal? If it isn't against the rules, then it's perfectly fine.

The thing about Accel World I don't know is whether it's godawful pandering of the absolute lowest kind or commentary on otakus in general and their delusions. I can see arguments for both which kinda annoys me.

all it really needs to do is take 1 step lower and it would be a satire and I would enjoy the RL part.

Man, I love how Yang uses whatever public platform he can get to undermine the rhetoric of the corrupt Trunicht. I wish him well on his fight for a better democracy.
I wonder how his plan to take over the fortress will work out given the unpredictable nature of the Rosen Ritter.

How on earth is it commentary? Regardless of any technical merits the anime has, the actual plot is just like all the books you read when you're 10 or 11 about kids getting sucked into computer games or whatever, except porny because it's for manchildren rather than actual children.

binbo 2

Haha that was great! The summons were cute. Sakura was cute. Binbo was ... binbo, but less binbo than last week.

Bobby was perverted.

Props for the animators to remember to give sakura's boobs a good old fashion bounce occasionally.

A lot of shows sadly tend to forget :/

I mentioned it in the AO thread but my theory is that
he's a renegade/rogue Secret

I didn't think Secrets could be humanoids, wouldnt they have made efforts to communicate if that were so? And he has a human father via that book/photograph in the last episode

This is why I think that Truth is some freak accident that caused him to be sentient unlike other Secrets. I don't know what caused it, it might've been something specific to that particular incident. Who knows. I think the kid in the picture is the real guy and Truth is just taking his appearance whether by memory of the kid he absorbed or some random reason.
