From up on Poppy Hill
Dat running
Speaking of
Mai Mai Miracle, I finally got around to this set in the past slice of life movie. Like MMM, it's pleasant and :firehawk and all that. It's no
Only Yesterday, but it's nice to see the Ghibli touch go back to a story that's a bit more grounded in the real world.
The only thing I didn't like was the crappy complication that pops up in the second half of the film. I think I'm getting tired of writers lampshading their own cliches in their work:
Like, they obviously know it's cheap, but they still threw it in anyway. Yeah, it gives them the climatic ending, but it just feels so forced. I'm sure at one point it became a question of needing personal stakes for Umi to give the audience something more immediate to identify with, but I was more ready to facepalm when I saw what was coming.
That said, the film had a nice energy to it and the focus of the film is put mostly on the bigger "macro" complication that lingers over the whole film, so on the whole I can't complain. I look forward to picking this up whenever it's available anyway.
As an aside, I mean, I academically knew why people used to use the word "cutpurse", but I guess I've never actually saw why:
Maybe people were trusting back then, but that really does look like you're asking to have your cash stolen.
