K-On! The Movie
So, I'm going to avoid a full review since it would just be all black bars and I think that's dumb. Hopefully when more people see it, we'll be able to talk about it openly.
I also don't want to post any more caps - even though I put the last one in a link under spoiler text - just in case. lol
So as I was watching the movie the second time, I just realized that the Olympics were around the corner. The cynic in me thinks that they timed the BD release for this week to get any Olympic hype they can (presumably if you care about the Olympics, you'll want to buy anything related to London). The super cynic in me thinks that it's possible they chose London in the first place because they knew they could open the movie in December to get the otaku nerd first sales and then sell the BD when the Olympics opened to get a second wave of sales. I hope I never find out the truth about the K-On marketing plan... I want to keep this as pure as Aria.
As for the movie itself, (middle Act spoilers and general impressions of "the trip")
I'm not sure what to say. I both enjoyed the experience (enough to watch it twice), but there's also a part of me that felt it was totally unnecessary. The London tourist-porn Act was fine, and funny at times - they had a certain classic British comedy gag in the middle that made me chuckle, and there is a remix of a music cue that they use which is FUCKING AMAZING, but of course, other than spending more time with the girls, it didn't really serve much of a purpose. They also came up with a cute way for them to perform in London which I'll leave unspoiled. (The very idea of the second performance is hilarious because... well... you'll see).

The film's school segment deals directly with Asuza's song at the end of the series - why they wrote a song, how they came up with it, and a repeat performance (for the viewer at least). I feel like this is the heart of the story that they came up with to justify the movie's existence in the first place and, if you're a fan of the :firehawk or the original series, then it's a nice moment.

their own Abbey Road sequence. It's a really charming way to send off the characters and I think pays off the music aspect of the show pretty well. I almost wish they didn't show the real Abbey Road in the film and let this by the one frame of reference, but I guess that'd be too high concept for most people.
I'm also glad that they just let the animation speak for itself at times. The film trusts you to be able to place the movie in the correct timeline (if you're a fan) and even if you're not, you should be able to follow along fairly easily (so it works as a stand alone film).
Was it absolutely necessary? No way. But short of selling out and doing K-On!!! with the kids at College/the new Keion club, this is a perfect compromise to both make money off the franchise and provide a nice send-off.
Sentai needs to announce something quick. Even if it's to say that the movie is "coming" at some indeterminate date in 2013. Otherwise, I might bite the bullet and go straight to the source.
I also hope that there was some document of KyoAni's trip to London - similar to the HK documentary they had on the FMP discs. I have no idea if that extra even exists, but it'd be a neat thing to have.
Now I get to feel :firehawk for K-On! and focus all my thoughts on Hyouka. Just as KyoAni has moved on, so must the rest of us. lol
(And fuck, I ended up using the black bars anyway. lol)
