Going off the first episode, calling it a sketch show is a stretch. The flow is different, but K-On! was part comedy. Keep in mind I am only talking about the first season.
I'm not saying K-On! was super original or even started a trend.

if you don't want to watch it all, you can skip the middle ground for both seasons because its mostly filler (albeit above average filler)

I looked up old impressions of the first episode. It's not a great episode, or one that tells you what Yuru Yuri is because it is a parody that most people just take at face value as the opening. Also I must look pretty foolish because even though you think it's K-on Lite I thought it was a rip on K-on.
Your assessment that it wasn't a parody is pretty par from other impressions that found it to be a "generic moe show".

It's all right. I should have watched a few more episodes before even comparing it to K-On!. I didn't mean to start up anything.
It was the right comparison to make though from the first episode, and that's what you posted impressions of. I would be more interested in understanding why a large number of people take the opening at face value instead of viewing the events of the opening episode to mock tropes.

We're approaching the tone of the last 1/3 of season 1, which is definitely a good thing. I imagine all the Phi Brain children will get their own episode where they manipulate someone. Then they'll all take matters into their own hands for the final arc.

Metal Skin Panic MADOX-01
This is a 40 minute OVA from 1987 that's about a powered battlesuit being tested by the military that just so happens to fall off the back of a truck and end up in some loser's hands. He tries it on, finds himself stuck in it, and has to fight back against a military that isn't taking prisoners in their pursuit to retrieve the battlesuit. It has some of the ugliest characters I've seen. Story is pretty bad too as the guy just wants to meet up with his girlfriend during all of this.
Now one might think this is something to be avoided with the above description but, Jebus H Christ, the OVA is a showcase of mechanical & effects animation if I've ever seen one. This is straight up porn for anyone that appreciates such. It's like everything non-character related that could be spruced up with extra animation was done so. Military vehicles like helicopters and tanks are beautiful in this, there's all sorts of hot gadgetry & weaponry in the MADOX-01 suit that's great in motion, and hell, I think there was even an amazing doorknob that was just there and a joy to watch turn.

Hitokage, I'm genuinely curious why you had GTO rated so much higher than Golden Boy. To me it's odd to like something a lot but not care much for its inspiration.
