Bit off-topic since this is manga stuff, but I'm curious about how her adaptation of the Legend of Arslan turns out, too. The books were written by Yoshiki Tanaka, who also happens to be the author of the Legend of Galactic Heroes.

That's no guarantee of success. I went into to Tytania on the basis of people saying it was by the same authour and what I got was so utterly disappointing.

Although this is from me who suffered burnout halfway through LotGH and has now subsequently been spoiled on a plot point around ~80 episodes in....

I think I'm done with this show.

The show really just isn't entertaining to watch at all. The only one of the main four who makes this show even remotely interesting for me is Miyako. She's out there, but compared to Yuno, who to me is just annoyingly childish, and Sae and Hiro who have pretty much zero interesting traits whatsoever, being out there is a good thing.

I planned to stay away from these types of shows for a while, and while I was studying for finals and finishing homework and such this was a decent time waster, but in the end I just can't justify watching this instead of other, better shows I'm watching.

I'm almost certain that this hurt physically to read. People not liking your favorite anime truly isn't arousing.

It's the source of all energy...okay...and you can't have it in your body because I guess it's poisonous or some shit...okay...and he has it in him, probably because of the blood of the Royal Family or the Glass Battleship or something, and he survives...okay...

...So why in the name of FUCK did it only flare up to that debilitating pain just as he was about to kill Vetti?

This really isn't all that much better than my "God hates Cleo." explanation. It's still quite possibly the dumbest case of deus ex machina I've ever seen. And even worse, the way it's being presented, I can't even bring myself to get overly animated about it.

Oh, and just in case the pathetically stupid train wasn't moving quite at terminal velocity yet, Rachel now loves Vetti. Why? I don't know. Ask somebody who hasn't completely given up on this show showing any sort of competence.

Oh. and now Vetti's complaining about an "absence in my heart". I...what? YOU"RE FUCKING VETTI! You're the guy who attacks ruthlessly and didn't give the slightest FUCK during that massive battle. What the fuck is going on here?!

Actually they didn't cut anything from what I read, but they did change from 3 67 minute OVAs to 2 OVAs.

So I looked around a bit...

Originally, we have:
Area 88 Act I Uragiri no Ōzora, 50 minute OVA released on February 5, 1985
Area 88 Act II Ōkami Tachi no Jōken, 57 minute OVA released on August 5, 1985
Area 88 Act III Moeru Shinkirō, 96 minute OVA released on August 15, 1986

But.

The first and second OVAs were edited into a 98 minute movie simply called "Area 88" and released in theaters on July 20, 1985 (yes, shortly before the second OVA was released on video).

The OVAs were re-released on video in October and November 1992... except there were four parts called "Area 88 Act 1", "Area 88 Act 2", "Area 88 Act 3" and "Area 88 Act 4". Area 88 Act 3 (47 minutes) and Area 88 Act 4 (50 minutes) actually were Area 88 Act III Moeru Shinkirō, now divided into two parts.

The DVDs that are currently available in Japan are Area 88 Gekijōban (i.e. the movie mentioned earlier, a compilation of the first and second OVAs), and Area 88 Moeru Shinkirō (i.e. the third OVA, minus the "Act III" part of the title).

(then, there would be the 2004 TV series, but that's another matter altogether)

So I looked at the episode through perfectly legitimate channels on Hulu and I can say pretty confidently that the spinning room was made with CG. While the room itself, being very squarish and geometrical without overmuch deformation wouldn't have been too difficult to do by hand, the glowing circles and the marquee text would've been really hard to nail right. To use CG for that, and hand drawn for the room, then compositing the two together would be way more effort than it's worth, so the entire scene (minus Akira) is probably CG.

It's interesting to note that, before and after the spinning scene, the background is clearly hand drawn. Only when it's in motion did I.G. resort to CG.

Also the character animation is way more shoddy than I remembered. Them nostalgia goggles.

I watched it on a big screen HDTV on bluray and thats DEFINITELY the case. I posted about it to Stump ealrier but it might have gotten overlooked. Its definitely CG.

Well, me and Bikkun are up to the midseason climax of Futari wa Precure (rewatch for me, first time for him). It is the best of things to watch with someone else. I am sort of glad he decided to go in chronological order after he watched Suite (and that was a fluke that he watched it at all).

The manga is pretty much the worst way to experience Toradora. Anime or LN!

LN does have the better ending, anyway. Not that it differs wildly from the anime, but it's handled a lot better, and one detail is changed that makes the whole thing much nicer.

Also, KB, nobody knows who Bikkun is because he promptly forgot GAF exists about an hour after I introduced him to AnimeGAF.
