Ojamajo Doremi - 19

The one about Hazuki
being kidnaped by the worst kidnappers in history, since she still can't use magic Doremi and Aiko go save her.
Policeman Doremi was hilarious.
The Queen is really benevolent.

something posted an interesting, non-comprehensive look at how quite a number of series have done, sales-wise, with sequels and additional seasons. Worth a look to see who some the best and worst follow-up performers have been.

The show on this list that kept growing the most? Nanoha, which saw an astounding 160% increase in average sales from the original series to A's, and then another 100%-fold increase to Strikers.

Scientific proof that StrikerS is awesome. Suck it, haters.

Battlefields are so grey. I need color. Looots of color! Like Rio Rainbow Gate!

Battlefields can be colorful.

Posting the sweet fanart wallpaper because almost all the in game shots are spoilers. Here's a cropped 16:9 version since most people have like a 1080P monitor.

Could be worse. It could be Mitsudomoe'd. ;___;

What happened to mitsudomoe was a blessing. Show definitely benefited from less repetition of their formula.

If MGS4 didn't tell you enough to stop taking it seriously, Peace Walker
true final boss should've told you to stop. Jpop in my Metal Gear games, doesn't even fit the game itself

Casshern Sins thrown on the list for later.

I actually liked the music.

Meganebu looks incredible.

A website, registered under TOHO's name, opened to announce that the Meganebu! (literally, Eyeglasses Club) television anime will premiere this October.

The Niconico Live service will stream an unveiling of the anime production on July 12 at 7:30 p.m. (6:30 a.m. EDT).

The anime company Studio DEEN released a series of Meganebu original drama CDs in 2011 and 2012. The CDs revolved around a group of "ikemegane" (handsome eyeglasses-wearing) high school boys:

It's sad that a lot of shows are ending, but that just means the summer shows will fill the void!

Crunchyroll put up another trailer for Dog and Scissors, definitely gonna be watching that one.

fucking Moyashimon :(

Completely expected with the character design change. First words out of my mouth watching season 2 were "What the fuck happened?" Though it fit in well, as the quality of the show dropped pretty much across the board. Only made it halfway through before dropping it and I loved the first season. :/

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay

Meganebu looks incredible.

It should be noted that there's no indication what relationship, if any, the drama CDs most of that article talks about have to the upcoming anime.

Edit: What we do know about this from an earlier newspaper article:

A television anime about the adolescence and friendship of high school boys in Sabae City is now in the works at TOHO and other companies. The anime will premiere in October.

According to TOHO, the story is the coming-of-age of high school boys, living in a rural area, who create friendships at school. (Sabae is a city in the western Japanese prefecture of Fukui.) Six members of the anime's staff visited the city and observed the city's eyeglasses shops and main shopping district for research on Sunday. The television series will incorporate much of what the region is famous for, including its world-renowned eyeglasses, Nishiyama Park, and local cuisine.

A NeoGAF Anime forum would certainly be a justifiable thing. Anime discussion occurs pretty much everywhere on GAF, in indivitual OT threads, in this thread and other Community threads, and it spills over into Gaming all the time when people make a random thread about something like the Attack on Titan Unity3D web game. It would be a lot easier to follow, in much the same way AnimeSuki's millions of forums and threads for everything keep things (relatively) organized.

But it would also lead to a decreased amount of critical interaction as people are less likely to go into threads for shows they don't like.

Ojamajo Doremi - 20

Majo Rika no baka.
She was doing so good at the beginning, but alas overconfidence.
There's a new witch in town, and she's Majo Rika rival, Majo Ruka.
Doremi and the others, goes on a mission undercover,
using magic to turn into boys.
To take back the original MAHOdou the girls build a new one.
MAHOdou on the road.

Fuck, I had totally forgot about this week's Majestic Prince being a "special episode" recap thing T_T

Maou-sama just ended. It was okay. Overall, I definitely liked it quite a bit, but I don't think it'll leave a lasting impression on me. Will watch the next season if there's one!

Oh what the fuck. Last episode was alraedy bad enoguh.

[Area 88] - OVA 1

There are three ways to leave Area 88:

1. Serve for three years.
2. Pay a penalty of $1,500,000.
3. Desert.

Area 88 is the location of a mercenary airforce who are engaged in a Middle Eastern war. Anyone who works for this mercenary unit has to sign a very strict contract whereby they are bound to serve at Area 88 until they fulfil one of conditions listed above, or, of course, until they perish. Our hero, Shin Kazama, is tricked into signing up to become part of Area 88 and the story revolves around how he deals with his entrapment and the actions he's forced to perform if he wants to survive and see his loved ones again.

If this is was a Mamoru Oshii flick we probably wouldn't see much conflict at all and instead we'd focus more closely on what effect this situation has on the main character. However, as it's an OVA from 1985 which was created with the help of some real plane fanatics it's hardly surprising that a great deal of time is spent focusing on how cool it is to fly a jet plane and blow people up. How cool is it? Pretty damn cool, judging by the lavish attention on display during every action scene which is shot in a manner to make the action really exciting:

As such there's a bit of conflict between the theme of the story and what we actually see on screen. We're told, by the main character no less, that this is about a man trapped in a place that many characters describe as hell, a man who is slowly being consumed by his terrible actions, a person who is losing their basic humanity. However, when we get to the actual scenes they're really a lot of fun to watch and I don't get any sense of dread or pain watching them, they're clearly meant to be pretty sweet. Violent conflict, deadly conflict is really the highlight of the OVA where as most of the character stuff is fairly flat and standard.

I don't want to focus exclusively upon this problem because I actually really enjoy this OVA for what it is, all the aspects of the work which speak to the time in which it was made and the culture from which it comes from. The ridiculous and awesome 80's hair, the melodramatic scenes of men throwing themselves to the ground:

the fetishisation of planes, the pop music that plays during combat - it all works for me because there's something charmingly authentic about it all. The director takes the work very seriously and there's no winking at the camera, no light hearted escape from the grim reality of the mercenary life. What we may now see as ridiculous, such as moments like this:

are clearly meant to be heartfelt and so if you can let yourself be brought into that kind of storytelling then there's plenty to like. I say that the problem with the story in this first OVA is that it's not so much a movie with a beginning, middle and end but rather a series of short stories that happen to all be in a single OVA. You can really tell where that it's a collection of manga chapters rather than a complete story.

One thing which I enjoy is that even though most of the characters are rather simplistic and predictable very few people are completely villainous. The person in charge of Area 88, Saki, doesn't have a personal vendetta against Shin, even though he does have long hair and a cool scar he's just doing his job and that means keeping Shin trapped there. The supplies manager is trying to fleece all the pilots because that's how he makes his living and so on. Hang on a second, speaking of Saki and his cool scar, isn't that actually the scar that appears all over Infenro Cop? Wut?

Anyway, by far the worst and most unacceptable part of the whole story is when true 'villains' do emerge onto the screen:

That's right, scary black people. These guys have no apparent character to speak of, all they do is turn up and menace everyone with their aggressive postures. Everyone kinds of stands back from them and watches them as if they were animals in zoo and why they're treated with such hostility is never explained. Heck, when they get out of the plane they even play the 'bad guy' music that lets you know that these folks are up to no good! Later on it's revealed that they are actual bad guys of a sort, which is even worse because no one in the entire OVA is treated with as much hostility as these characters. Really, really bizarre.

Moving away from that hugely uncomfortable moment lets look at something I can lavish with near universal praise: the production. I don't really mean the actual quality of the direction, which is actually rather average, what I mean is the quality of the character designs, the background art, the mechanical design, the shading. the choreography of the action scenes and the actual mechanical animation therein. It's all really gorgeous stuff. I hope you wont mind if I indulge myself a little by putting some of the art on display.

Now you may be thinking - shading? What's he going on about? I know, five tone shading is kind of a punchline these days but you can't deny that excessive shading looks pretty damn great (even if our main character is doing his best to rip-off Luke Skywalker)

I can imagine that the character designs aren't to everyone's tastes, but I like them well enough:

Those looking for both great exterior and interior plane porn wont be disappointed:

I like the design of the interior of the barracks. The prison cell motif is fairly obvious with the heavy brickwork and blue lighting but I think it's effective nevertheless:

So, in closing I would recommend this OVA to others but only if they can accept a fairly standard (and fairly 80's) action story wrapped up in some really incredible production values.

look at dis eva wannabe

Well, if you like loli's getting tortured and pedorifdic nudity censored with hilariously awful light beams then you'll love these two episodes I guess. Thinking back on this series, I can't help but be amazed at just how shamelessly stupid and perverted the whole thing is to the point where it could've carried the entire show if none of the surprisingly excellent animation and scene composition was there.

The ending had one of those dumb collection of quick cuts of stuff from the manga while the credits were running so it's pretty clear that nothing else is gonna get adapted of this series so ~rip hair smut~

RIP Secret Best Show of Spring 2013 :(

New series debuts bolded.

So the updated temporal chart is:
17,940 *1 Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai. [DVD+BD]: 2013/06/19
*8,656 *3 Karneval [DVD+BD]: 2013/05/28
*5,072 *3 Haiyore! Nyaruko-san W [DVD+BD]: 2013/05/31
*4,162 *2 Yondemasu yo, Azazel-san. Z [DVD+BD]: 2013/06/05
*3,960 *1 Devil Survivor 2 [DVD+BD]: 2013/06/19
*3,155 *1 Ginga Kikoutai Majestic Prince [DVD+BD]: 2013/06/21
*2,813 *3 Yuyushiki [DVD+BD]: 2013/05/29
**,346 *0 Dansai Bunri no Crime Edge [DVD+BD]: 2013/06/19

**,*** *0 Arata Kangatari [DVD+BD]: 2013/06/21
However, bear in mind that a couple of these are being boosted by event tickets and the like, so final series averages for stuff like Karneval and DeSu2 will probably be lower. For example, Karneval is over 8k on the v1 temporal list but v2 only sold 3,257.

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
The audience for a seasonal thread and a generalized anime thread is exactly the same. We already have a problem where people don't really post in the individual anime threads or just crosspost their reviews here (or vice versa), another anime thread would just exacerbate that issue.

For a seasonal thread and a generalized thread to work, there must be a strict rule that all posts in the seasonal thread are related to the current or upcoming seasons, and the generalized thread can only talk about stuff that is older than the current season. This would be a cumbersome and defeat the point of community threads on GAF, which are basically sub forums mooching off of the NeoGAF servers.

Or we can return to the days of 3-4 page seasonal threads. That's always an option, but I wonder where all the effort that usually goes into the OPs for these threads would go afterwards.

Pretty :80s though no-one appears to be raped yet though I do foresee
Pink haired sweetheart being raped by traitor friend or something of that sort
. Action is pretty gorgeous and the protagonist's backstory, while not that original is not bad. It seems competent as a whole, though the constant leaping back and forth can be distracting at times.
Character designs are also pretty pleasant I feel overall. Worth a watch, if not just for the sakuga.
