Zankyou no Terror - 02

I really, really don't like how Lisa is being treated in this. Favorite character is definitely the badass looking cop who
figured out the riddle properly
.

I was bored as shit with The Wind Rises, the story telling felt awkward as shit the whole time, and the voice acting of most felt monotone. Mix it with a fairly standard non-anime story, and it just fell flat for me. Wouldn't call it the worst Miyazaki film I've seen. That is given to Ponyo (imho).

Aldnoah Zero 3

Damn a good episode, main earth char finally showed his chops. I was going to complain that Slaine still has had little screen time but then dat final scene happened. Where will this go from here?
Will he go back to the Mars side and slowly take out the opposition from the inside? Maybe this won't be a typical "two leads in opposing sides of the war" deal, which I hope is true as it would be very refreshing

So I looked up that earthquake scene, and wow that was pretty funny. He shouldnt have used humans it just didn't work and did seem very distracting. I can only imagine what the airplanes sound like. Don't want to spoil myself on that.

...Chuck Norris with his fly open?

Well, this obviously didn't have an animation budget.

This is rather glorious in its outrageousness and stupidity.

Wait, I thought, fire, clubhouse...forget it. Just go with it.

I do enjoy these senshi poses that the girls use when initiating a battle.

The Wind Rises-
So I've been meaning to watch this for the longest time, mainly because this is the sort of material I wished Ghibli handled more often. I'm glad that the studio animated this story as a I feel it's something worth telling. That said, I feel that the movie has a host of issues that really hold it back from being something truly great.
First thing's first, the sound effects were a dealbreaker for me. I had to pause the movie multiple times because I was laughing too hard due to the sound effects. I sort of understand why Miyazaki had humans do the sounds as he felt that it would make the planes, among other things, feel more organic. It's way too distracting though and poorly done as a whole. I don't care what his intent is if I can tell some human in a studio is making fart sounds. There were multiple sequences early on where I thought it was a dream due to the sound effects like the earthquake.
Well, the earthquake itself was also extremely stylized. I didn't have a problem with the sound though, even though I knew about it going in. If it was trying to evoke the era of old radio dramas, I think it served that purpose fairly well. I feel like Anno is probably the bigger sticking point, but having listened to both the JP and EN versions, I actually prefer Anno to Joseph Gordon Levitt.
As to Jiro's tale, I'm really conflicted on this. While watching the movie, the whole thing with
his wife being that kid he helped in the earthquake
, I couldn't help but think how bullshit that was and lo and behold, all of Jiro's personal life in the movie is fictional. I like many of the themes presented in the film but I don't think it's handled in the best manner. I mean when the wife went for her 'walk' at the end of the film, it was very obvious what was going to happen as I've seen it a dozen times in a number of other films. I do think the romance itself was handled fine though, despite the sudden
'let's get engaged' scene and then the 'later lets get married' scene
.
Honestly, I think the fact that the film is not a documentary is what makes it much more revealing, since it is very much not about any of the people involved (Jiro, or the author of the original "half" of the story), but is instead a look at the nature of work. Basically the whole "shokunin" concept. It certainly reminded me of the other "Jiro" from Jiro Dreams of Sushi (as explained by the man himself here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2L5IrkQTV0)... which leads to:
Quite frankly I don't think Miyazaki is that great of a director. While I do think he's very good at creating simplistic children films, I feel that he's very limited at what he's capable of when he steps outside his box. The film in certain areas feels childish in tone despite handling rather mature/serious in nature. For example his portrayal of Jiro is somewhat flat and seems to mirror Miyazaki himself rather than the actual Jiro. Having read up on the real life Jiro, I feel like Miyazaki paid superficial attention to Jiro's emotions and instead of creating some sort of complex character, we're like with a workaholic. Miyazaki said that he wanted to do the film ever since he read the quote from Jiro saying "All I wanted to do was make something beautiful" and I don't think Miyazaki captures the tragedy,if you will, in that statement. I almost want to say Miyazaki falls into the biopic trap of glorifying their subjects but since so much of Jiro's personal life is fictional, I can't really say that.
... my belief that the film is as much autobiographical as it is pseudobiographical. Certainly it feels very much a movie about his life, and his dedication to his craft (as told through his craft) than anything else he's done.
I thought this was a really gorgeous film even by Ghibli standards. There were some really great animation cuts and I feel the background art did an amazing job helping the movie come to life. There is a strong emphasis on movement that really helped capture not just the planes but the characters as well. That said, I don't think Ghibli's character designs work in this type of film. I think Yoshifumi Kondô's designs would have been a bit better in this area.
I will admit that a number of my issues are with me wanting the film to be something it isn't trying to be but I feel that as it stands, the film's tone isn't that interesting (even if the themes behind it are) and that it feels too safe as a work. It seems like it glorified being a workaholic and didn't really portray the characters as actual humans. I also feel like the wife's drama stuff is superfluous,
partly as it's never clear whether she was terminal after she ran away from the sanatorium or if they just wanted to stay together even if it meant her dying
, and hurts the work as a whole.
The film is decidedly apolitical as well, which I still see as potentially a negative. It excuses itself by trying to reconcile this problem within the film, but I'm not sure it does it all that satisfactorily. That said, I see it more as a poem illustrating Japanese dedication than any kind of narrative piece. The fact that it is a celebration of one man's literature being imposed on by a celebration of one man's engineering, all glued together by one man's vision as an animated film director, and you have a piece that feels much more contemplative than one that is progressive.

Someone a while back told me it was the other way, and that was the only reason I wanted to watch SN before Zero.

Now I can really put off SN.

They probably meant the SN VN, because Zero spoils pretty much all but one of Stay Night's plot twists.

https://twitter.com/dmmd_TV_PR Anyone who can read Japanese want to translate the last few tweets? Apparently there was either production problems or they recognise that the last episode was so fucking atrocious that they're doing a redraw and airing it on the 26th. And maybe a redraw of the first two episodes as well? I'm not really sure.

They're right to do something about the last episode though. For anyone that isn't watching it, it was basically the most poorly drawn episode of anime this year to my knowledge. I think I'll have to do some sort of horrible collage of the faces later.

Free -Eternal Summer-

More glorious innuendo and more delicious upper body. Makoto da best, as usual. Will probably drop if the show gets bogged down by shitty melodrama again, but until then? HNNNG.

Sailor Moon Crystal

So far so... meh? Will keep watching but I'm already not impressed by Toei's CG future affecting my transformation sequences. Why, duckroll, why?

Rail Wars

No.

SAO II

The things I'll put myself through for Miyukichi. *sigh*

Barakamon

Now this is my kind of slice of life! Already a strong contender for best show of the season in my opinion. The characters are all adorable and bursting with life. It feels so vibrant it's just a joy to sit back and watch them all interact with each other. Greatness.

Nozaki-kun

What's up with this season being seemingly filled with so many promising comedy shows? A surprisingly solid setup here for some laughs. And again, the characters go a long way in making sure I remain interested in watching more.

Sabagebu

Another very strong comedy right here. I like how the gang comes across as some deeply flawed individuals in the best, most hilarious ways. The main protagonist most of all. So good.

It kinda feels like a proper version of what that Gainax show apparently tried to be and failed so miserably at.

Tokyo Ghoul/ESP/Terror

One of these shows seems to be very good. The other two less so.

Aldnoah Zero

I've seen more charisma and personality in a toilet bowl than I have seen in the protagonist of this show so far.

Urobuchi why?

Akame Ga Kill

Jesus H. Christ, talk about mood whiplash. One scene can be tropey, slapsticky anime humor and the next scene can be
a dead girl hanging in a torture room with an expression of abject agony and horror carved into her face
. It all feels so incredibly manic and I can never quite tell how the show expects that I'm supposed to react to the images it's presenting me. No thank you.

Yami Shibai Second Season

More quirky japanese horror stories that can be quite hit or miss usually. It's a good thing that each story is so short that I don't mind it when it doesn't work.

The previous vocaloid ED song was better.

The tweets are basically a response to them presumably being flamed to hell and back by people who watched the episode. They're trying to reassure people that the production team did not intend to release it as such, but that various circumstances led to the embarrassment. To make up for it they're polishing up the proper version and will stream it online on the 26th. They're also trying to reassure people that the BD/DVD episodes will all be improved upon, not just episode 3.

Sounds like damage control for a disaster? I dunno, I don't watch crappy shit. :p

I'm fine with the film being apolitical. I have more of an issue with the characters themselves being that way. They skirt around the issue and do touch on it gently but I would have liked a really indepth look into the actual Jiro's psyche, a person who was proud of what he had accomplished but conflicted about the war effort itself.
That said, I see it more as a poem illustrating Japanese dedication than any kind of narrative piece. I definitely agree that it's contemplative but I just wish there was more 'oomph' in the actual analysis of the shokunin life.

Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun Episode 3:

I am not sure if this is the best comedy of the season, but it is certainly the most meta-textual of the bunch. Anyway, so this time we get the addition of Kashima, the eventual yuri send up that I was expecting. While I was thoroughly entertained by that bit, I was less enthused by her quite frankly fucked up relationship to Hori.
Yea, not digging the violence, I understand it was for comedic effect, but yea, no, that was not sitting well with me at all.
I did like the dramatical reading, top notch stuff there, but still I would call this the weakest episode thus far just because I don't like Hori all that much.

Sabagebu Episode 2 and 3

EhR9vLa.gif

This anime is just too funny. Probably the most I've laughed with an anime in quite awhile. And that .gif only covers one small second of all the goofy madness that is Sabagebu. It's really funny having him explain each episode that it's all dellusions that are causing it to seem like real gun fights instead of airsoft. The whole hornet section of Episode 3 had me laughing all the way through as we finally met the teacher who likes to dress up like a bear haha.

Ehh I really enjoyed the first two episodes, but just couldn't get into this one. The gags were a miss with me. Although I still do really like the narrator and MC.
