Eureka 7: AO

I've been watching this one over the past couple of weeks (finished it tonight), but I saw the first few episodes a while back when it was still newish. I feel like I should've left it at that. Really, what the heck is this show? Why did the writers go in the direction they did? It's just so f'n stupid to me.

The main character is, really not all that great. Naru? Ugh. Truth? Really? Really?

I remember reading people's dislike of AO and thinking it could not be that bad. I didn't want it to be as I really love the original series, but maaaan. So disappointed. So very disappointed.

I had planned to make this a long post detailing every little thing I dislike, but meh, I'm sure I'd just be repeating what I'm sure many others have already said.

At least it's nice to look at.

Edit:

What a coincidence.

That outfit, while terrible, is still better than anything in the sequel series.

Weird thing is, I watched episodes of Eureka Seven AO when it was airing, not having watched any of Eureka Seven.

AO kinda bored me to tears and it just got away from me.

I stopped when
that girl got abducted? Or floated away? Or something? It's been a while, lol
.

I watched even less of Captain Earth, but it gave me similar vibes where it's gorgeous to look at and there's mildly fun things going on, but there's just a thick invisible layer of mundane over the whole thing and I couldn't get into it. Even the amazing mech transformation sequence couldn't sway me.

Hyouka 3 - "O-re-ki..."

Of course it is.

Deep dark secret with the uncle is moderately interesting, is this the part of the story that people didn't enjoy? I recalling a few members saying the first few episodes are tougher to get through.

The smoking guy was pretty funny, the perfume made me think he was using the classroom as a bachelor pad to slay broads at school.

In my case, given that I dropped Kyoukai no Kanata, initially some of the dialogue was rather offputting for me because it reminded me of KnK: Unnatural as fuck.

Of course then it gets better. I blame Satoshi for being a cock during those episodes with his wordisms.

Well as you've probably seen a bunch of times already the next arc is the best. I'd like to watch the show again myself and might bump it up my list. So many shows...

Yeah, that's why I want to be in the right mood to fully appreciate it. Some shows I like to give more thought and consideration to than others and Hyouka is just that. I'll probably find another 12 ep series to watch along with the rest of it sometime over the course of a couple weeks.

Yeah, maybe.
Ninja Nafe.
Haha.

Well we never see you coming and going, always striking from the shadows on birthdays.

Hyouka 4 - "I was just lucky"

The rain in this episode was pretty much eye porn. The uncle story turned out to be ..... something I guess.

Praise Onii-Sama Oreki, how could you ever doubt him?

This is exactly how I feel when im taking a dump too.

One more episode before I hit the sack. With the culture festival around the corner, do we get to see the girls in yukatas? Im not sure I could handle it.

SAO II #6 - I did like that it showed the whole ALO incident did actually have some impact on Kazuto. The episode did make me wonder though...was that flashback scene about the action against Laughing Coffin from the ALO books that got skipped over in the anime? Or was that told in the same way in the GGO books?

Book readers?

Yeah. I think so. I enjoyed it myself, and the whole 'kids learn about historiography' element.

Story was told in GGO. The author just wings it all. lol

Not in the festival. Later.

If I had the ability to squee, this would probably be the right time to do it.

Im enjoying every second of this show. Stopping to write even a few sentences about each episode is letting me take it in and enjoy it rather than binge watching it.

That has to be one of my favorite episodes of anime in a while. I really liked the little bit of light comedy. Made 9 and 12 feel a little more human and relatable and breaks up and compliments to the dark tone nicely. And that whole train search sequence all I can say is HOLY SHIT was that brilliant and unexpected.

Also I foresee a crap load of 5 cosplayers. lol

Haikyu - Episode 18

Finally caught up with this before another episode piles up today. Good conclusion to the match. Not quite as exciting and flashy as the first half of it in the previous episode, but there were some great moments like two amazing last minute saves, and the final score. Maybe the way it ended was a bit too dramatic though. I love the way they used the post-match stuff to continue to build momentum on the character dynamics and the progressing tension in the prelims too. The final scene was pretty cool setup for the next match.

If only every new IG show can be this great!

Hyouka 5 - "And what does it mean to be "rose-colored", anyway?"

Oreki seems to be turning over a new leaf and he also seems to not be completely correct with his previous theory. Glad to see hes 'fallible'.

Oreki's sister is an enigma, shes off doing stuff. Really tired, enough Hyouka for the night.

Glad to see Chitanda have resolution over her uncles past, but hes still missing???

I still can't get over the visuals in this show, was this released weekly?

Watching Hyouka really makes me want to go back and watch Haruhi again, even if its just parts of S1 and Disappearance. It would be really nice to get some Blurays Funimation. I might watch through a bunch of KyoAni stuff after this. Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions seems like a good show.

And he had been for 7 years by the time. He's realistically assumed as dead by everyone in the show.

Huh, watching Hyouka makes me weep at the path Kyoani has taken ever since. It's their masterwork.

Have you watched Nichijou? Watch that instead. If you have watched it watch it again instead of watching chuunibyou

Around 5,6,7 it really dragged. Some insipid "mysteries"
The sekitani jun stuff and hyouka origin were interesting.

Tatsuya is playing Call of Duty while everyone else has to live in reality. He has all the cool weapons, regenerating health, nukes, aim assistance etc. Let's not forget his ninja skills and insane body conditioning. No wonder Yotsuba hates his guts. They are the most powerful magicician family in the world and yet Tatsuya makes them look like a joke.

The only other works i've seen by KyoAni is Haruhi, I thought Kanon, Clanned, Love Chunibyo, and K-On were all good?

Amagi Brilliant Park had some nice art, but I don't think its going to be good. At all.

No I have not, guess ill add another to the backlog...

Amagi Brilliant Park has the best chance of being good out of pretty much everything they've done since Hyouka (same director) save for Tamako Market. I don't think the prospects are high however.

K-On is pretty cool.

Im still a bit 'new' to anime, never really watched any as a kid/teenager so im not too familiar with directors and such. But this is hopeful, I have no idea what Amagi is about, but I really did like the artwork for it.

Aldnoah Zero - 06

This continue to being poor man Majestic Prince with its similarities in plot like war against superior race and its dynamic but worse at every level except character design, MJP not starting hot too but the character still leaving stronger impression and the CGI action is miles better than shown here.

I do enjoy the atmosphere that clearly the director try to build, the rather quiet tone but its clashing with the plot that rather bombastic to justify that, and once again that frigging music man.. Its like Ei Aoki want to make something different than what actually got made.

Did the show develop more... plot(???) yet?

aka less fan service

Not a lot, but there was a little bit in this episode anyways.

It was almost like a cute little romcom episode, with some backstory.

Also I watch it for the fanservice, and they never let me down. I'm buying blurays for this show when they come out.

This is super awesome, shit became Hollywood conspiracy/police flick with anime edginess.

adjkyhhgjmook, fucking ideal entertainment right here folk.

I decided to randomly pick one of the series I've seen mentioned in this thread recently, and boy am I glad I did. Thanks to whoever brought it up.

Yo, yooo. I can already tell this is gonna be something special. The art, imagery, animation, music -- top notch. The story also seems like it's gonna be great. And I already foresee some feels. Very interested in learning more about this S.E.E.D. organization and the Raaja(?), the latter of which I'm assuming are aliens, but look like they could just be some big ass mutant bugs.

I know I need to get some sleep, but now I kinda want to marathon this. Probably shouldn't.

Edit: Yeah, I'm gonna take my butt to sleep, haha.

Haikyu - Episode 19

This is me watching Haikyu!

Fantastic job building up to the match and following up from the hyping they did in the previous episode. Oikawa is a great rival and right from the start of the match there's already a sense that they're way out of their league. I really like the visual touches which make even minor movements stand out so much more when they're key to the tactics in a match. This show is just really enjoyable to watch.

Tales of Princess Kaguya

A beautiful send-off for Takahata career (if it is one), it's fascinating because it takes what presumably a classic folklore story from japanese culture and frames it within a perspective that's what I could say distinct-inly feminist in how the film attempts to address the struggle for the protagonist to maintain her own autonomy and identity in light of the pressures society wants to enact on her, while appearing to be incredibly faithful to the original folk tale, despite having roots in a less progressive time, the ending is also incredibly bitter sweet in how it eventually resolves that core conflict that spurs throughout the film.

In a way reflecting on it further it feels like a culmination of everything that represents Takahata as a storyteller, all his themes are here, his love for tradition and simplicity over excessiveness extending to what he feels about what the "good life" constitutes, his unique sense of art direction, and his tendency to ground his story in a very down-to-earth way, with minimalistic use of fantasy elements, preferring instead to ground those elements in the imagination of his characters.

The animation, music and direction was also top-notch, not a single frame felt wasted, and from a animation perspective there's some real stand-out moments throughout, including a dream sequence that's like classic takahata in every way possible, reminiscent of his classic work in Anne of Green Gables and Only Yesterday.

What more can I say really? other then I'm incredibly glad I got to experience a film such as this, it was truly well-worth the wait, even if for some it might be a bit too calm, relaxed then what one usually expects from say a Miyazaki production, but I couldn't have asked for more from Takahata really. He's surely proven himself time and again, that he's the better, more consistent director over Miyazaki.

I can't really get the motivation to say much other then... it was like a more bittersweet version of Grave of the Fireflies? it's kind of interesting to examine in the context of what's happening in Gaza right now? and it has some interesting allusions to a book I never read?

Not that it's a bad film at all. In fact it's a really good one, and I was definitely moved by it in a number of ways, but it's not dazzling me like Princess Kaguya did.

Thanks for the impressions. It's reassuring to hear all this from a fellow Takahata fan.

Can't wait for this one.

How does one get into such an outfit regularly to begin with?

She dips herself in latex every morning.

In other news, I have a couple Crunchyroll guest passes ripe for the picking.
