Summer 2014 Anime |OT2| Or, where Jexhius finally watches more Doremi for Hito.

The SARS epidemic in Asia at that time resulted in a number of anime production delays for various reasons, mostly related to the fact that there are various production stages which rely on outsourcing in China and South Korea. Many shows simply skipped episodes or failed to broadcast. BONES chose to make 4 recap episodes instead to fulfill their entire 26 episode contract with FujiTV.
Huh. Now I'm curious what other shows were affected. It's crazy that it took more than a year for the series to be properly concluded.

Haruhi Episode 7

Even more mysteries! We find out that the computer club president that Haruhi blackmailed at the start of the series has gone missing, and where he went was just out of this world...
literally. ALSO CRICKETS!!!!
. I still have no idea where this episode is taking place, I'm so confused right now it's ridiculous. Is the jumping around about to get worse? When will I get conclusion to the Spooky Island Murder Mystery? Also hey anime made a reference to Honduras! Never thought I'd see that haha.

Everyone else is watching Gossick, I'm watching Haruhi. I still have so many anime to catch up on that is about to leave but others have already watched. Gotta make sure I get Lucky Star and Nichijou in before they are gone :-/

I remember right after the TV run ended, there were still only rumors that the story would end with 4 OVAs. I was at Anime Expo that year, and Bandai Ent was promoting the show at their panel. During the Q&A I straight up asked if the release would be 26 or 30 episodes, and the producer said "30 episodes". Felt so good.

Somehow I can't imagine you at a con.

Off the top of my head, I recall Texhnolyze and Gad Guard both having a number of missing episodes as well. Not sure what else was affected, but I probably remember those 3 shows because they were ones I was following at the time.

I wouldn't be surprised if that was directed at me (with my MAL rankings and not disliking gosick) lol
Branduil and myself haven't exactly seen eye to eye in regards to our opinions on shows (in fact I can't think of a single show I like that I know they like nor a show they hated that I hated :p)

No worries. Watch what you like. As long as it doesnt make you miserable.

Just caught up with SAO II, will post my reviews tomorrow (I think, I'm kinda tired). I'm planning on reading the novels, 1934 pages apparently, my friend told me. But even then I would've read only until the end of GGO, no Mother's Rosario or further.

It has nothing to do with your opinion on shows, it has to do with bringing in irrelevant non sequitur arguments. Nobody gives a crap what 62k people on MAL think about a show. Saying a bunch of people liked something is not an argument. No one is going to say "oh, well, MAL liked it, I guess I was wrong!" Nobody cares what people who are never going to post in this thread and we're never going to interact with, whose only credentials are being enough of a weeb* to rate all the anime they've seen on an online database, think about any particular anime. If you like an anime you should have enough confidence in your opinions to argue for it on that basis instead of hiding behind argumentum ad populum.

I figured it must be a vastly more economical business model than ADV or Geneon had.

"Buy cheap and sell cheap." They're doing the best they can to hit 3,000 units (combined BD/DVD) for a title. It's a smart business practice, but the way they rush titles out leaves little room for quality, which means the fans suffer through doing final QC for them. I can't personally support it, but I know others only care about prices and nothing else.

I just buy whats available if theres a bluray. Im too ignorant to learn japanese so Im at the mercy of subs and dubs and I have to settle for whatever quality release gets put out.

Introducing, the Nintendoman Secret Anime Challenge!

Hello good people of AnimeGAF! See, I couldn't help but feel that things have felt a bit slow lately in this thread. So I thought of a fun activity that I could do to liven things up a bit!

And that is, to guess which anime that I'm watching!

I've noticed that Narag on Twitter is watching a secret anime of his own, so I figured I'd do the same. Only I'll make it fun for everyone!

I have picked a random 12-episode anime. Each day (give or take) I'll post an episode impression of said anime, keeping things mostly discrete. But I will drop one major hint that will narrow the results down a little bit for you in each impression starting from episode 2. I'll try and make the hints less and less subtle as the impressions go on.

But what good would a challenge like this be without some sort of prize?

Whoever correctly guesses the anime that I'm watching before I reach the last episode gets to make me watch any 12-episode anime of their choosing. They don't have to watch any show in return. :)

Any and all posters of AnimeGAF are free to join in whenever they like!

EDIT: To keep things fair, everyone is only permitted to guess one anime per episode impression. This is to help you think with the hints I give over time and not just wildly guess.

And without further ado, here are the impressions for episode 1!

Secret Anime - 1

All right, this is a show that I've been meaning to watch for myself for a while. And I have to say, this is a pretty interesting start. Pretty okay pacing for the first episode. And it looks like the plot will definitely be going places soon.

That's all for now! Good luck!

Well, on the plus side, they can't be worse than the current writers they have.

With them writing out episodes summaries and Random Curiosity pics spam, there is no reason to actually watch any currently airing anime anymore.

I don't think anyone on ANN has the same level of wit as an AV Club contributor. They're setting a high bar that they can in no way reach. Especially if, like with most anime reviews, bias gets in the way.

ANN reviews are...comprehensive alright. I checked the website today for the first time in a good while and saw a review of Nekomonogatari White. I'll let the score breakdown speak for itself.
Overall (sub) : B+
Story : B
Animation : A
Art : A
Music : B+
Because the best thing about any Monogatari anime is the animation.

What's the point of separating art and animation categories if you're just going to treat them interchangeably anyway?

*that shocked gasp you hear is MAL admins affronted by my slur

you do realize that my point isn't that a bunch of people liked it so you must be wrong (and I was never arguing such a thing), but instead that there is a case of a bunch of people liking it so it's possible views outside of this thread can vastly differ? (and oh hey I am at least a nobody because I care at least a little :p) The referring to MAL wasn't because this thread's thoughts on the show were wrong, but that there are plenty of other thoughts on the show out there and that it was possible that they were checking it out because they were interested and other people thought it was decent despite the reception it is getting in this thread. It wasn't saying you guys are wrong, MAL is right but that it is quite possible that people can enjoy the show... in fact here is a listing of 62,000 people who on average enjoyed the show quite a bit instead of the 15 vocal members here. Now if the people reading your comments in this thread have tastes similar towards yours then obviously they should listen to you guys, but holy crap you guys are throwing it under the bus like it's freaken mars of destruction (which honestly isn't that bad if you get some good riffing going on :p)... I can understand not liking gosick but most of you guys seem to come off like it's one of the worst shows in existence. Mal is a completely valid non irrelevant source of data that gives more insight then your single vocal opinion o_O. In no case ever will I feel that my opinion is correct and yours is wrong, but alas in general it feels like just because I am willing to look at information from outside of this thread that my opinion is completely and utterly rendered useless :/ (except for by cajunator, they seem pretty open minded :p... note: there are others, cajunator is just the only one that actively takes the time to respond and defend the fact that people can have different opinions on stuff :p)

I would never blindly follow ratings for anything (mal/metacritic ect) but that doesn't mean that there isn't relevant and interesting data to be taken from such sites (especially if you take the time to read the reviews and find people that have similar tastes to yourself... such as what people do in this thread when they find others in this thread that have similar tastes.). For example Halo 3 is well rated on Metacritic... I would never personally recommend it to anyone, in fact it's my most disappointing game from last gen and in general I hate the game. That doesn't make the metacritic for the game useless though, people's opinions differ quite a bit, and in general the metacritic numbers would be closer to the average view of the game across gamers then my personal views of Halo 3 (thus if someone asked me for a first person space shooter that they could enjoy I would still likely recommend halo 3 because in general your average space shooter fan will like halo 3... I vastly preferred perfect dark zero despite its horrible bugs :p). At no point would I say I am wrong because of metacritic, nor would I say you are right because of metacritic if you liked the game, but again it's quite a bit of data and something that should be taken into account when looking into stuff. To just throw away readily available data to me and seemingly be unwilling to even look at it because it's a popular opinion instead of the general thoughts of this single thread is just silly to me... that is unless I missed the part where you drive anyone out of this thread that doesn't share your opinions...(don't worry I don't plan on going anywhere any time soon :p) then it makes perfect since because then if everyone is on the same page then obviously the thoughts of this thread are vastly superior :p

as for the last bit
If you like an anime you should have enough confidence in your opinions to argue for it on that basis instead of hiding behind argumentum ad populum.
why in the heck would I want to take the time to defend my thoughts on a show beyond the fact that I liked it when I know there are at least five people who have talked about how horrible the show is (and in general have just said stuff along the lines of it's terrible, or I couldn't get through the first episode without going into detail as to way) and are likely ready to try to pick apart anything I say as their views and tastes differ from my own :p I am never going to convince you guys are wrong and that you should give the show another chance... just like you would never be able to convince me that my thoughts on the show is wrong and that it is actually terrible :p

Anyways, to sum up everything, I don't get why you would feel that thoughts on anime outside of this thread are pointless just because you won't interact with them directly (there is plenty of good information to be found outside of this thread), and in general gosick is a decent show that I won't bother to go into details about because of fear of being picked apart by rabid gosick haters that have seemed to appear with people watching gosick :p

I guess I only heavily disagree on Psycho-Pass with this community.

I did use MAL to see some of the top anime and decide if I liked them or not. Obviously I don't agree with the positions, but going through the top 200 or so was a great chance to see a bunch of anime I really liked.

An entire episode about Yuki learning to be a local hero and channeling his inner Kamen Rider. Only instead of fighting EEEs, he fights HHH, which has nothing to do with wrestling and everything to do with
safely disposing of porn.
This show is developing things I never expected, like an ongoing story. And a sense of humor that I can get behind. Ikumi is a girl after my own heart. The Kei Grant jokes were fantastic, and I've never even played the Yakuza games.

Haruhi Episode 8:

Finally the conclusion to the island murder mystery! This went in a really unexpected direction, and we didn't have too much out of the ordinary, except for whatever happened in the cave where Haruhi had that sudden flash. I don't know if that meant something or if it was just her finally figuring out what had happened. Also I love love the Phoenix Wright references in this episode.

The biggest problem with MAL, and other user aggregate sites for that matter, is that it's not a representative sample of any meaningful group. MAL doesn't represent an aggregate of anime viewers at large, it represents an aggregate of people who use MAL, and that's a crucial distinction.

You could easily argue the collective opinion of x hundred number of posters here is just as valid as the tens of thousands who use MAL because each group doesn't represent more than the community they're a part of. Thus there's no reason to treat MAL rankings as anything other than the opinion of another group we have no involvement with and value it as such. That's the main point I gathered from Branduil's post

Branduil

long post

Saying that people can have different opinions on shows is self-evident. Telling us MAL rankings is pointless because that's not meaningful data, it's just a number. It doesn't tell anybody anything about a show.

You should want to defend your opinions on a show you liked because critiques and arguments are interesting and force each side to consider new things they hadn't thought of before. What's the point of a thread where everyone just mindlessly praises what they like and never interacts with critical opinions? People can go to animesuki for that.

Sentai definitely had a lot of problems with video quality before. Didn't they release Moretsu Pirates and Penguindrum in 1080i for some reason? Then there's been other QC problems like the mono audio on the Japanese track on that Kids on the Slope episode. Thankfully the titles I've gotten from them lately seem to be fine. It's still pretty clear that everything's being rushed out though (those menus, for instance).
