Ashita no Nadja 13-15 (Swiss Arc)
Now for these episodes, I can find a running theme. Acts of kindness and deceptive appearances. That goes not only for what's going on in Switzerland, but also in the somewhat extensive amount of time episode 15 spends back in Vienna showing the lives of Nadja's real family. (Herman is slimy. This is not new, I just wanted to mention it.) The Francis train is all but confirmed, and the same irony I brought up with Nadja back at the end of the England arc is in full force here. The idea of her trying to apply
Noblesse oblige as simple atruism, thinking she's a commoner even when she really isn't - does show a lot of the texture of the show. I'm also seeing the show emphasizing the importance of families.
Like how Zabie was raised in the orphanage being
, and the similar reveal that Chocolat is really a white lion, George is just dyeing his fur. I tried to think of anime that were set in Switzerland that this show could be drawing from, and it's almost certainly Heidi. Nadja's dress was very much what one thinks of when they think of Switzerland. And the Alps-crossing episode was pretty tense for this show. Even Hannibal had a tough time with that one, the Dandelion car needed Nadja's song and some last minute strongman strength.
The merchandising nature of it can't be helped, and this show still has a real sense of adventure to it. To Italy!
