Well, I think because it's dealing with gender I instinctively want to see if there's a political position that the show takes or the author is trying to make.

If the series is going to make a point about gender (and that's a big if), I suppose it will happen little by little, over the course of many episodes, as the series progresses further. Two eps isn't enough. From what I know of the manga, later the "setup" of the series changes, so making a judgment right now would be too early.

Ushio & Tora - 03

Overprotective dads are the worst .

There is nothing you can't do after a nice fist fight between 2 men

Getting that "prologue" time in shonen - vibes.

That's a very reasonable impulse, but you need to be careful bringing your Western sense of gender politics to a work produced in a nation where there's still always a female employee bringing tea out to guests at a meeting and women are expected to leave their careers once they marry or have kids. The 60s never happened in Japan. Feminism isn't a powerful cultural force.

It still has something to say about gendered performance of sexuality (though probably not a lot), but it shouldn't be viewed as a commentary on contemporary feminism.

Simoun is the best show about gender

GATE 3

"Fighting giant monsters is a defense force tradition!"

Haha, I love it.

Maaan. This show is so awesome. Seriously, it's really good. It's definitely one of my favorites this season. And Rory Mercury. Oh my. I love crazy ass characters like this.

I think I picked the perfect time to jump back into anime. There's so much amazing stuff out right now.

Oh you think THIS is too painful? We haven't even gotten to the painful parts yet.
This is fun fun happy times compared to where this train is going.
Oh god, I don't want to even imagine what you're hinting at. Poor girls.

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
What about this narrative appeals to you? Sounds like you're invested in some middlebrow notions about "worthwhile" art.
And saying Prison School isn't artistically ambitious is laughable.

I like Prison School and all but it's not even in the same universe as Me and the Devil Blues.

wow, the entire show is on booru? that must be one epic gif.

It's a webm man. Get on with the times.

And it's just a collection of worthwhile scenes. It's pretty short.

Shorter than the compilation of all the goals Sanogo scored in the past 5 years. /lowcrossthreadblow

Classroom Crisis 3

This series is a bit confusing.

In one hand I think it tries to be a bit more "realistic", with life in a company, ceos, accounting, budget concerns, downsizing, r&d, etc.

But in the other hand, it doesn't seem real realistic to me. At all.
It has a too obvious of antagonist, he is clearly confrontational and reeks "bad guy of the story".
It isn't realistic that no one has heard of the plan to downsize A-TEC. And if the plan is to do it that way, without anyone noticing and then blame someone else while embezzling the money, it would be trivial to stop the machinations, making known what's happening to the rest of management.
All the complaints of what is happening to them and all the plans to affect the team are slightly bizarre. It's a company. Boss gives orders, done. You don't negotiate what it's going to happen, you accept it or resign and go to another company.

I think the inherent problem here is trying to make a fictional story (drama, thriller, intrigue?) of something as mundane as a company cutting a division. CEO announces, done. Would you imagine an ornate, bizarre schemes with drama and thrills happening every time Microsoft or Sony closes a division? It could be argued that a really great director could get a great movie of mundane stuff like this, but alas, in this case we don't have a great director.

And here we have anime teenager main character safeguarding his purity from the attacks of a hot woman. Thanks god anime MC, you kicked her out! Imagine what would happen otherwise! Sex!

Shows like Space Dandy, OreImo, Fate/Stay Night, and nearly most of what gets discussed in this thread and many other forums are essentially infomercials made to push some type of product, whether that is a video game (God Eater), light novel (anything from Dengeki), video disc (Madoka), merchandise (anything waifu/husbando), manga (Kodansha/Shueisha), or anything else. They have an audience in mind that buys these items and so they have to include elements to appeal to them. This is why shows like K-On! and Euphonium had to hype the main four girls: to market to that type of audience despite the shows appealing to a broader audience.
Phrasing it that way just makes that part of the industry seem depressing at a macro level, like I should feel guilty for enjoying just watching those kinds of shows or something.

Crunchyroll Starts Streaming "Symphogear GX" Today

http://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2015/07/17/crunchyroll-starts-streaming-symphogear-gx-today

Crunchyroll announced the acquisition of Symphogear GX during Anime Expo 2015, and the series is now just about ready to go. The first two episodes will be available today at 4:00pm Pacific Time, with episodes 3 and 4 to debut next Friday at the regular simulcast time of 1:00pm PT.

Symphogear GX will be available to Crunchyroll members worldwide except Asia.

So yeah, there will be no subs waiting after this week's episode.

Also it's Akira Hiramoto, not Hashimoto.

All these Japanese names look the same! /racism

Certainly Hiramoto put a lot of effort into Prison School's art. But even Prison School's fans will call the series trashy. And that's OK. Not everything has to be high-minded, sophisticated art. There's a place in the world for all kinds of entertainment. But there's no way to claim that a raunchy sex comedy is as ambitious and daring in the manga world as historical fiction about an African-American blues musician from the early 20th century.

Actually I like Prison School better. There's way more Prison School then Devil Blues though.

In any case Hiramoto is a very good mangaka. I look forward to anything he makes, be it serious or porn.

FINALLY.

Edit: It's just called Symphogear, willt hey have the first two seasons and also GX?

Prison School 2

It was a enjoyable episode, however it would of been so much better if some of the jokes were paced a bit slower especially with the Chairman. Speaking of Mr. Chairman he such an amazing character. They actually did the peeing segment with Kiyoshi and Hana pretty well.

I forgot that Gakuto gets beaten up a lot in the beginning of the series which made me a bit pissed. The guy gets abused too much.

What I don't understand, it's how the ED fits into the show.

Also dat ass.

I guess I'm wondering if I'm supposed to laugh at the female characters for being extreme or for being "wrong"? Should I even laugh at them since there is at least a kernel of truth in what they believe? Especially when the text they find themselves in emphasizes their physical attractiveness (but also paradoxically a lack of sexuality)? If I as a viewer is supposed to find them titillating, am I proving the point of these characters? Should I be locked up in some strange program that punishes men for expressing sexual desire?
Is it supposed to be funny because of the irony of these women's supposed puritanism is juxtaposed with not only their appearance, but with the physical pleasure that they give the male characters whenever they violently punish them?

It seems clear to me, at least, that we're supposed to be laughing at everyone because they're all terrible, terrible people. As for the actual position of the show, I find it hard to judge what they show is saying at this point considering everything is so overblown for the purposes of comedy.

I confess that I mostly view anime not so much as entertainment media anymore, but as a industry/business instead. It wasn't intended to make anyone feel guilty for enjoying anything; rather to keep in mind that the late night shows aren't made purely for entertainment. There's got to be some revenue coming back for the expenses paid out for everything and that comes from buying things. There's definitely projects made without concern of revenue going back (Coil was one mentioned earlier at an AX panel), but a lot of things need that revenue for the companies to stay solvent.

Edit:
On another note, the Zillion BD-Box announcement has me intrigued into watching the series. This is thought to be the first Production IG work as the main staff who went to form the studio assembled staffers from Tatsunoko following this series. Additionally, Hideaki Hatta, president of KyoAni who provided assistance for Zillion, helped finance the studio's creation. It's a nice piece of anime history that never quite made it internationally. Streamline Pictures dubbed 5 episodes and the OVA, but that was it. It's more known for the games brought over by Sega. (Show produced by NTV and Tatsunoko; aired on the NTV stations)

errr, 99% of any entertainment media is part of a business/profit oriented industry.

You're confused by all your personal hangups. Yes, Prison School is trashy. That's not just "OK," that's the point. What makes it great isn't that it's trashy and has tits and poop jokes and watersports (all great stuff on their own) but that Hiramoto takes the basest of subject matters and marries it to his own virtuosic command of the medium of comics (or "art with a lot of effort," as you so inadequately described it). Art/entertainment/porn with plot's value doesn't come from subject matter, where Holocaust stories automatically get a bonus 100 points and smut starts out 30 points in the hole. That's the kind of thinking that infects Academy Awards voters and puts down the greatest works of comedy because it isn't "high-minded."

My coworker finished Tokyo Ghoul and now he is watching Assassins Classroom. Is that show good?

Assassination Classroom is a pretty great comedy/shonen series highly recommend to anyone. Dub is fantastic too if you're into that Sonny Strait kills it as Koro-Sensei.

Shokugeki no Soma 15

Not sure what to say, this continues to be an awesome adaptation of an awesome manga. Loved the shot of the girls swooning over a future Soma based upon how his father turned out.

Ushio & Tora 3

This also continues to be awesome, the comedic timing for every joke is pretty much perfect and the action beats while still feel a bit too shonen prologue are still very entertaining. Hopefully we'll get to a point soon where Ushio can really begin to hold his own and him and Tora start working together to battle the hordes of monsters and other people we've seen teased in the OP.

Shokugeki No Soma - 15

Show is still so good.

It has that same charm as the original Gundam Build Fighters. It's just filled with so many likeable characters!

Well that's a lot different from what the VP does which is just beat the shit out of people, there's no love in that!

Maybe we will someday get an animated explanation for the concept of Andreconomics

I wonder how they'll handle that second arc if they're going to do it. People are already complaining that 80 chapters in one cour is too fast, second arc is over one hundred chapters and there's still not a real end in sight.

I really want to see it animated though, so much good scenes happen in it.

Btw, does the chairman have the same voice actor as that silver ninja from Ninja Slayer? They sound really similar.

Allegedly after the commercial failure and cancellation of Akira Hashimoto's artistically ambitious manga Me and the Devil Blues, about blues musician Robert Johnson, Hashimoto decided, "So all you manga readers want is tits and ass, huh? Then I'll give you some tits and ass!" And so Prison School was born.

Or so I've read. I kind of doubt it's true, but I'd like to think it is.

If that's true, that has to be utterly depressing for him then about the popularity of the series.

Probably not the case. he used to do extreme sex comedy, 'yarisugi to atashi monogatari' before doing me and the devil blues. Prison school is him going back to his root.

My coworker finished Tokyo Ghoul and now he is watching Assassins Classroom. Is that show good?
Yes, it's good.

Assassination Classroom 21 Dub

While I'm pretty sure we aren't going to see Nagisa actually
assassinate this guy
it'd be pretty amazing if he did. Going to take a wild guess that
Koro Sensei will be able to escape his defense form just as Nagisa would have finished him and is able to stop him
. Very good/intense episode looking forward to seeing the finale of season 1 and can't wait for season 2.

So would you guys still watch a anime series even if you were spoiled ahead of time about a plot development or something?

I mean I was spoiled on Code Geass
about Lelouch dying.
Then again it was partially my fault because I still haven't finished the series yet even though it's been some time since I watched it and I stopped for some reason.

Depends on the spoiler I guess. With your example I wouldn't really mind though, it's not like it would really change the wacky experience that much.

Yep, often the fact a character dies or a twist villain is revealed being spoiled in a no context environment does not diminish the impact of said twist. How the scene happens is almost always far more important then the bullet point "x happened" summary and as long as you don't know how or why a spoiler happens it can still have just as much impact as if you had no idea at all. Going off your above spoiler, my buddy and I watched Code Geass blind the first time though I knew of that spoiler and he didn't yet we both had the same reaction when it finally happened.

Kind of related, but I wish I finished Persona 3 back then where before all kind of mama knew the ending.

Kinda ruin the biggest experience from it.

Watch it anyways. Dunno how far you got, but believe it or not there are crazy things that happen in the series that I think would be even worse to have spoiled.

I also go spoiled on P3's ending but I didn't find the ending lost it's impact for me, if anything it made the finale of the game all the more bitter sweet.

I was spoiled as well by
typing in the MC's name and it automatically provided a result that said dead next to his name.
Though honestly what really mattered to me was the journey which was a great experience rather than the end.
