One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
You're confused by all your personal hangups. Yes, Prison School is trashy. That's not just "OK," that's the point.

Sorry, but there's nothing particularly ambitious about Prison School in the context of manga. Nearly-porn comedy is an actual subgenre, which includes titles like My Balls, Onani Master Kurosawa, and Itokoi Chidori, just to name the ones I've read. It might stand at the top of that particular world, and maybe it is even the best among comedies currently serialized, but it is still always able to rely on an existing and (this is the key point) commercially viable audience.

How can this be ambition? This is the exact opposite. The smut was a safety net in case the plot fell through.

On the other hand, with Me and the Devil Blues, he tried to adapt a historical figure and folk legend from a foreign culture that even the natives of that culture don't pay attention to. It is not just unique in the world of manga; it is unique in the entire world of sequential art. It may be flawed in its various ways, but I can excuse these flaws because the sheer audacity of serializing it in a ethnically homogeneous country with a reputation for racial insensitivity like Japan just outweighs everything else.

I can't believe you seriously brought up the Academy Awards in this discussion. Pretty much every films that won the award for best picture in the last two decades have been box office successes. You're really likening the mentality that warps the Oscars to our perception of Me and the Devil Blues? That Devil Blues is one of these multi million dollar grossers and Prison School is the comedy that got snubbed because it wasn't high brow?

Damn, Shit just got real. I hate accounting dept. for this reason as they always try to control the show. However, it was an excellant episide overall and it looks like this one will go a little deeper in depth than I initially thought. Definately, there is a family corporate struggle incomin as well asany personal battles and struggles.

Porco Rosso

Ever since GameFly started doing movie rentals last year I took that as a chance to catch up with most of the Ghibli movies I hadn't seen since that was luckily around the time they were all coming out on Blu-Ray in English. I only recently decided to watch Porco Rosso (on DVD) and thought it was pretty great.

I guess I went in expecting, y'know, and adventure movie, but instead got some kind of noire movie. Like a lot of see from Ghibli the plot also seems to pretty much just be about character development without any really big stakes involved (like Totoro and Ponyo). I'm also only now starting to notice how Ghibli movies tend to have a young "pure" female character who ends up redeeming a gang of ruffians.

As usual with Ghibli movies I watched this dubbed, and was really impressed with Michael Keaton as Porco. He pretty much nailed the feeling the movie gave off of Porco as a noire protagonist.

With this done, all that's really left are Cagliostro and Kiki's Delivery Service.

Garden of Words

Today I decided to sit down (actually lie down) and watch this movie. To be honest, I didn't expect it to be that short. I also didn't expect it to look as good as it does. The photography was great, watching the movie was a pleasure and some scenes had me questioning if I was really watching an animated scene (though distance from the TV was playing a role here).
The content itself was nice, there was a certain dose of romanticism and poetry in it that tickled my fancy, although I felt it was a bit too short. Then again the short duration made it so the 2 main characters were pretty focused on, while everyone else was more of a side figure.

Since I also have the manga around, I guess I'm gonna read that next.

Seraph of the End 10 Dub

Where for art thou budget? The last two episodes have been incredibly cheap/bad looking so many overly long still shots and not even the clever kind like someone deep in thought for an extended period of time the lazy ones like a still image of a fight for 5 seconds then another still image for 5 seconds. Perhaps the plan is to finish these episodes on the blu-ray release because as a final product this is laughable.

Story wise, well Yu and Mika finally met, that should at least make next week interesting, and the teaser
teases Yu's Seraph of the End powers I assume
which should add more to the story as well.

Damn, this is exactly what I was looking for from this setting. The balance between the fantasy world and modern technology has been blended very well, also a good and sad moment with the little kids for our MC; I love how he is morally making decisions for everyone involved. Gothic Lolita girl is a bad ass, lol. That dragon got messed up by the rpg.. This series is awesome so far..

Byakuya was funny but kind of figured that would happen. He ought to have become Akatsukis buddy.

Normally I'd comment on the half naked men and woman, sexy outfits, and vast amounts of asses on screen.

But I actually want to acknowledge how they took the time to actually write out the newspaper and make me pause to actually read the thing.

Looks like Moribito is on netflix. We now have no excuses.

Best anime series of all time. Best fantasy tv series of all time? First episode is good but not incredible, takes a bit to build the characters and get going. Opening song is kind of dumb as well.

You've changed because there were definitely vast amount of asses shown as well as a lady wanting a threesome. I applaud you for holding back.

But yeah the attention of detail is pretty amazing and the English is actually good.

Wow, that's actually nice effort from them.

Classroom Crisis - 03

I know I'm betting on the right horse, this shaping to be pretty good.

All Angelina know is spitting hot faiyah, damn Nagisa should've chewing dem chicken.

Red Photon Zillion ep 1

I'm always told I should watch some older shows and given the historical significance of this one, I figured it was worth trying the first episode of it.

The most amusing aspect of this episode for me was the cheesy 80s BGM/vocal tracks. The music definitely brought a smile to my face. Other than that, I was impressed by the animation during the battle scenes. It's a very solid production and leagues better than what I had imagined. The painting/photography was good too.

I'm not a huge fan of these "on another world, mankind has to protect itself from alien invaders" themed tales, so I had a bias going into it from that angle. It was still entertaining, despite Champ's bout of misogyny (hello 80s). Apple seems a bit too flat at this point, but this was meant to be an action-packed first episode to intrigue people, so I'm okay with it. What annoyed me was the lack of exposition regarding why the mcguffin was important when the setting was given to us from the first second. It's still the first episode, so things should develop soon. It shall be interesting to see what happens later on.

GATE 3:

You know the Otaku humor is slowly warming up to me. This is the Japanese equivalent of the lovable geek I guess. But the show has a ton of heart and I genuinely do appreciate how effective of a lead the main character is. He was given a leadership position and he has been rocking it since then. His troops have warmed up to him and they all have their own personality which is great. Maybe this IS an anime about humanizing the military.

Soma - 15

Simply continues to be quite enjoyable. I'm pretty pleased with the world building so far although I do hope that there won't be all too many new and special challengers approaching and the show makes use of the characters already established. Because power creep can quickly become an issue and we're by now already introduced to some of the seemingly most powerful cooks in all of Japan or at least Toutsuki (which kind of should imply the former). However, up to this point Shokugeki no Soma dealt with this excellently and instead of merely some plainly more powerful opponents we got reasonably well characterized people. Considering all the information concerning Soma's dad this episode, it should do just fine, too.

Prison School - 02

So in some regards, for instance art style and direction, this is different than most anime smut and thus inherently much more interesting than say MonMusu. On the other hand, I can't say that the slapstick comedy and smut is actually very good. I have pretty much no reaction to seeing these guys get brutally beat up, same goes for the more sexual explicit scenes. It's not like this show so far nails some atmosphere (and direction) where all the elements add up to something greater than their sum.

There isn't much to the characters yet either, as most of them consist of having overblown reactions to stuff. It's kinda weird but one of the things I enjoyed the most this episode was that Hana actually felt embarrassed about her incident with Kiyoshi and something developed from thereon. That was one of the few times someone seemed to exhibit an actual character trait.

Everything being totally over the top does nothing for me unless there's at least some reasonable foundation for me to contextualize it. After all, if everything is super crazy, then nothing really is.

Now I find myself enjoying this show well enough, however, I do wonder if I shouldn't wait to watch this uncensored one day. This massive censoring with wide lightbeams and what not is really distracting and I can't help but feel that this level of censored nudity etc. has a substantial effect on this kind of show.

Blood Blockade Battlefront 8 Dub

AHHHHH

STOP IT

Just focus on ONE plot line at a time, the stuff with White and Black/King of Despair simply isn't as interesting as what's going on with Libra and the clumsy shifting back and forth really helps neither story line out.

It really feels like this series wants to be an OVA series with each episode being 30-50 minutes in length, but instead they had to edit down the time for tv which gives everything a really disjointed feeling which I don't believe was the intention but that's what they get.

The black and white stuff is good and it's the main central storyline in the show. Get used to it because it's only gonna become more important and prevalent.

Food wars 15 - Nice to see new episodes again. Nice episode with the visit from Somas dad and all that brings. Looking forward to the next episode when Erina finds out.

Terrible new songs.

I confess that I mostly view anime not so much as entertainment media anymore, but as a industry/business instead. It wasn't intended to make anyone feel guilty for enjoying anything; rather to keep in mind that the late night shows aren't made purely for entertainment. There's got to be some revenue coming back for the expenses paid out for everything and that comes from buying things. There's definitely projects made without concern of revenue going back (Coil was one mentioned earlier at an AX panel), but a lot of things need that revenue for the companies to stay solvent.
Yeah, I know, it just... I dunno, kinda makes me wonder if I should start adding an extra layer of cynicism whenever I think about why those parts of the industry make the decisions they do (for example, Kadokawa Shoten kneecapping things at 10 episode seasons).

Ushio to Tora 3

I said this once and I said a few times already but this series is too godamn enjoyable. Everything about it is such a blast. Ushio and Tora's interactions is one of the best things about the series. I loved seeing how smug and moe Tora could be. It was nice seeing Ushio interacting with Reiko and asking her to dance. This series is definitely giving me some early Bleach vibes and I can definitely see Kubo getting some ideas from the author of Ushio to Tora. I mean early Orihime kind of looks like Mayuko.

Rz5e2Ob.jpg

Asako best girl.

I really do love Asako's interactions with Ushio, love the dynamic between them. This series is definitely one of the best shows this season, no doubt about that. It has everything that makes a battle shonen enjoyable.

Opening: Improvement over the previous one. Will actually listen to it instead of skipping all the time.
Ending: That song is bad and is a complete downgrade from Spice. Specifically the singer who ruins the entire thing. The Nao focus is absolutely hilarious though.

Hinako please.

My heart can only take so much of the OTP.

Erina was cute as ever and it was nice to see that scene again were it caused practically the entire fanbase to be in anticipation for when the truth is revealed to her.

And I don't really mind if they plan on skipping the Karaage Arc.

That arc was the worst one and everyone whose read the manga knows it.

Yeah, I know, it just... I dunno, kinda makes me wonder if I should start adding an extra layer of cynicism whenever I think about why those parts of the industry make the decisions they do (for example, Kadokawa Shoten kneecapping things at 10 episode seasons).

It takes the presence of mind to separate out a show being entertaining to the business behind it. It's one thing to say "the Phantom Bullet arc in SAO II felt very slow, but I enjoyed the pacing" and also separately say "Well, Iwakami wanted to replicate the packaging for S1, so Phantom Bullet was forced to be 14 episodes long." I wouldn't say it's cynicism as much as you understand "okay, Animedia wanted to bring in some male buyers this month, so they promoted Euphonium's girls in swimsuits" without it actually impacting the show itself (which has no swimsuit scenes in the first novel/season). As long as you can keep separate how you personally feel towards something and understand why it's done, there shouldn't be any issues.

I'd almost say it's better to take a semi-defeatist approach: "This is the way it's going to be and nothing I personally can do will change it, so I accept whatever happens." I'd love to see more Mondaiji, but I know nothing will come, so I move forward. That's not to be conflicted with doing what I can for other shows. I want more Euphonium, so I import merchandise and BDs from the KyoAni Shop. That's knowing what'll impact better than others. Do I personally think my one volume purchases will be the difference? No, but it's what I can do and as such I feel no regrets. Do what you can and so you have nothing to regret if nothing comes of it.

I don't know why this show get such a infamy, guess I just not bothered with the nationalism angle either that or either they not ramped up that aspect yet.

The gimmick is fun so far.. and seeing these medieval fantasy thing got rekt by machine gun and bomb is satisfying.

Ushio and Tora - 3

Still awesome.

Honestly, I don't really care if this stays as a MOTW for a while. These characters are so enjoyable that I don't feel like the show needs to be in any rush to get a story arc going really fast.

It's just a fun, fun 90s-esque MOTW shounen right now, and I'm 100% okay with that.

It's because the harem is coming...

I enjoy the show so far, but for me personally, if the harem-trope gets too much I'm abandoning ship.

That's pretty much preventing me from watching it. Modern military wrecking fantasy shit sounds awesome to me, but I can already see self-insert MC switching sides with his harem of generic animu girls.

Lurker popping in!

Ep 2 of Prison School....MY SIDES! Its been awhile since I laughed that hard lol.

Welcome, come by again next time you hurt yourself watching anime, lol.

If the show is as nationalistic as people say, he's not going to be switching sides, especially after what the ruler of the kingdom was doing during ep.2.

Yeah, I can see that harem, but it will probably be comedic than anything...

Watched the new BD with a few guys. Watched the Streamline Pictures dub and I had no idea about the Lupin name being tied up at this point. Was strange hearing all the characters call him "Wolf", but otherwise a decent dub. I saw that in the extras they have the complete storyboards run alongside the film which is -awesome-. I'll have to sit down with that at some point.

Also, yeah, the film is still excellent.

You're seriously comparing Prison School to My Balls? Err...

Mind you, I haven't read the manga.
.
And yeah, I am comparing the attitude that prioritizes subject matter over the actual work to the approach of your average newspaper film critic. Just look how little you have to say about Devil Blues other than it's basic plot. Nine of this is meant to insult Devil Blues, which is an excellent manga.
