Flying Witch -END-
This ended up being much better than I was expecting.
+Fantastic music, the orchestral themes specifically.
+Even though not a lot really happens, I was constantly enthralled. The episodes felt like they went by really quickly because I was very rarely bored while watching.
+Lots of whimsy and wonder. It's nice watching an anime like this where there's no real threat. The balance between mundane, everyday life moments and whimsical moments made them all the more magical.
+That bit with the enormous sky whale was fantastic.
+The cafe episode was pretty much flawless imo.
+Chinatsu is a great character to compliment all the magical stuff that happens. She's so innocent and almost everything comes as a surprise to her, so she's perfect to be used to introduce the concepts and practices of magic to the audience. Her simple perception of magic matches the simple nature of the magic in the show (more on that below). It's quite refreshing to have a character who's simply awestruck by magic, rather than it being commonplace and therefore uninteresting.
+Speaking of magic, I really like how magic is portrayed in the show. It's quite subdued and relatively simple compared to how magic tends to get shown in other anime. Most of the spells are cast using simple drawings rather than long incantations, and the spells themselves are eclectic without being outlandish. There's no flashy lasers or lightshows here, and as a result I was more interested in what the show would come up with next. A lot of the time in anime, magic is used exclusively as a weapon, so having magic be almost purely recreational was a really nice release. I think the extra bit at the end of episode 8 where Akane goes to Vietnam and makes everything black and white is one of the best examples of this - she does it because it's fun rather than having any real reason to do so. Teleporting Makoto to her so she had someone to take her photo was a perfect finish to the scene, too.
-Kei sounded constantly bored.
-The Harbinger of Spring seems like a central character in the OP but he only shows up for half an episode - not really a problem, just something that was a little weird.
-A lot of the really good moments were in the second half of the show, so the first half felt a little too dry. If they were spread out more evenly I probably would've started really liking it much earlier.
Gushing over. If you want a fantastic, calming anime, go watch it if you haven't!
