I want to like it but the characters feel so stiff compared to Baccano. It's still really good relative to the average show this season but man I can't shake those Baccano feels.

It feels a lot more closer to Joker Game than Baccano. That said...

91 Days 1

It was actually far better than Joker Game and certainly felt like a competent show. The story managed to be intriguing enough to watch, I like the setting and the main characters seem fun.

The new Jojo opening is a lot better than the last one, but still doesn't compare too favorably to previous openings. Still good, but not great. I don't know if it's just me, but the new opening feels too short.

Perhaps. I'm not asking them to be flamboyant like Isaac and Miria but there's just scenes where the characters should have a little more life. Take a look at 16:38, 18:54 and 20:32.

16:38 - Dude just got beat the fuck up, but he sits there and stares. He doesn't even look frightened or in pain.
18:54 - Setting aside how dumb it is to shoot a rifle over your shoulder like that, when Fango challenges the bartender, the bartender goes "no", dumbly, again, no reaction, no fear, no apprehension, no resolve.
20:34 - Fango is firing randomly, his arms jerking around but his body is oddly immobile

It's so stiff! I feel like anime is often guilty of overacting but this is blatant underacting.

I think you have to remember is that these are mostly people who are used to a certain amount of violence and so are desensitized to it. These aren't random civilians being attacked, they're people in or close to the mafia in a bar in a section of town that explictly caters to the dark side of society. So I don't think panic would come naturally to them.

Okay, I'll try this I guess. Going forward.

Damn some good action here with these puppets. The puppets so nicely done too, especially with the two I saw personally at AX.

Well he and blonde chick are obviously secondary to guy in the middle. I can already tell he's the level headed one of the group, aka, the Zorro, while the guy in the middle is the airhead with a heart of gold, aka, Luffy, and the girl is a flirt, aka Nami.

Probably true. Would it be safe to assume the show is set in a land that is not Japan but everyone will act Japanese? Like saying itadakimasu before eating food or going to a pirate summer festival? Lol

Other than the bittersweet mood this show creates, it didn't really take me in very much. Granted it is more a matter of personal taste since in my view the show has basically two really annoying characters interacting with each other.

This is true, and it's one reason why I think they're underselling this stuff. But I think the other side of it is that the production is cheap, and it feels like they cut a lot of corners in this episode on the characters who aren't the immediate focus.

For example, even if the people at the bar aren't extra-frightened by Fango's random gunfire, you'd think they'd have some sort of feeling about it. In the panning shot following it, they don't seem to be reacting to it at all.

Let me just say the work on Angelo and Corteo is fantastic, but I think a lot of the other characters are getting meguka'd.

Hey anime isn't (totally) dead! Both promising first episodes

91 Days 01
The most typical mob & vengeance story you could do. Zero originality. But even then, it gripped me pretty strongly, I felt it when his family is killed. The direction, voice acting, setting, the filmic tone, it all helps to sell it.

Alderamin on the Sky 01
Madhouse delivers in a notable (or at least better than average) adaption of a LN, with likeable characters, snappy dialogue, good pace, and intriguing setup. Again not very original (some tropes used in a single character: slightly antihero guy, super smart secretly, 'lazy general' ala Yang Weng Li, womanizer, childhood friend) but it's decently executed to be fun.

I think cheap is going a bit far, at least relatively for anime. It's not lavishly animated, but it generally looks good - I like the designs - and it's at least a bit above average when it comes to TV anime production values.

You certainly picked an unimpressive mid-distance shot there though.

nope

I didn't think you could make an uglier cat mascot than Aria but they did it!

Of course firehawk likes the ugly cat.

Yeah, maybe cheap is going too far. There are sequences where it looks very good (the whole first half of the episode), and sequences where it looks less good. That moment stood out to me as an example of the latter.

Can't tell who's more spoopy, the cat or the main girl.

I've had trouble enjoying anime depictions of real life every time. I'd rather watch an HBO series about prohibition or the mafia then an anime show about it. I'll still give them credit for going for it. Solid first episode so I'll stick with it.

It's weird that I felt this actually had more happening in it than I expected it to coming off of Aria. There're certainly a lot of similarities beyond the silly faces (which I adore), like the embarrassing remarks, the prominence of the sea, the school uniforms look awfully similar to the Undine uniforms, and a stupid cat to even things out - even if Vertical Mouth Cat is no match for President Aria. The setting isn't as interesting as Aria's though, I don't think.

Futaba's introduction was a little weird. Having her go to the ocean and immediately start poking at her phone was strange even if she's obviously desperate for her friends to contact her. She didn't even stop when Grandma was talking to her, which came off a little rude. Was genuinely expecting Grandma to say "you came here to look at the ocean, but instead you're just looking at your phone!"

Hikari's energy isn't offputting to me like it is to others - most of the times I laughed were because I was bemused at what she was doing. Why does she have a whistle? Why does she need to confirm her chair is there? So on and so forth.

It occurs to me that this sounds a bit negative, but I did enjoy it a lot, though. It's not as much of an Aria clone as I was expecting structurally, which was a very pleasant surprise. Will watch next week too.

Kono Bijutsubu 01

It was decent, and quite funny. I want to see that girl who was hiding in the locker. She seems like she'd be fun.

I will say I'm a bit worried about the possibility of the production falling apart as the show goes on, mostly because Shuka's well-publicized schedule issues on Durarara may indicate poor management at the studio. The first episode had only one animation director but four assistant animation directors, which isn't the most comfortable start but not the worst either. At least the show isn't being as ambitious as, say, Kabaneri, so hopefully they're able to allocate their resources well.

Well, that was a prety decent opening episode and a lot darker than I thought it would be. The characters appear to be interesting, and Angelo's revenge motivation should be intriguing to watch develop.

I don't think I can watch this. This kind of laid back anime really needs a special hook for me to keep watching like brown witches or platonically gay duos.

The visual style of 91 Days seems incoherent so far. Most of the time it seems to be going for the drab looking prohibition era, but then you have these gaudy designs such as the bar inside the church in the second half of the episode, not to mention the gangster with the bright yellow hair, jet black facial hair that wears a one legged pair of chaps. It doesn't give a strong impression of the creators' interest in the period. Baccano's recreation of the 30's, on the other hand, was a much more coherent work visually.

They seemed like they had gay duo potential to me.

Is this Shin Chan dancing with his butt out and some eyes sharpy'd in? Seriously.

91 Days 01

That was great. The way the shots were displayed and the way the scenes were framed reminded me a lot of Erased. No idea if the same staff from that show is also on this one, but that same quality that is almost out of cinema is there. Also yeah, I can echo what others have said, in that this could very well be what I wanted out of Joker Game and did not get. Cannot wait to see more. I have high expectations for this one.

I can't agree. It's certainly not a 100% historically accurate portrait of Prohibition-era America (as sonicmj1 pointed out in his impressions in the OT, the architecture of the city seems more European than American in spots), but it feels internally consistent. I certainly don't see the elements you mention as gaudy. Even the loose cannon mafioso you mention is fairly grounded for that kind of character.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable - 15

Solid new opening but the first 3 still continue to be the best. I could already see how Josuke was going to go
blind with rage a mile off haha
but some great moments through out the episode, I'm just in love with the art in this show, probably my favourite season so far.

Ben-To - 3

Sato's favourite game is Virtua Fighter 2?!? This is an anime protagonist I could hang out with!

91 Days - 1

First half of the episode was a lot stronger than the second half but still enjoyed it. Looking forward to where the story develops from here, though
I never trust offscreen deaths.

Not a bad start, it was pretty entertaining. The characters are amusing so far, should be a fun show for the season.

Euphonium 14

A little appetizer for when I get to watch these characters again. I love to see good stuff from KyoAni, Phantom World left me with a bad taste in my mouth (although the last 3 or so episodes were quite good, still not worth watching the whole show just for those).

Tsukamoto is totally gonna fall for Hazuki isn't he.

Woah, lots of interesting things today:

Thunderbolt Fantasy

Who knew that a show with puppets on this day and age could be so entertaining. Great action.

91 Days

Mafia and anime is a good combination. I hope it can delivers.

Alderamin on the Sky

MC is funny and likes girls, that's a plus, I hope they can deliver on the tactics front because I'm a fan of good tacticians.

Other than that, Jojo is still great and I like the new OP a lot and I think I can get over how bad Berserk looks just because I miss edgy violent anime of the 90s (flashbacks look a lot less ugly than the present day animation though, weird).
