But not as bad as my Toradora conclusion!

That reminds me, wanted to read your impressions now since you had elaborate comments on Tatami Galaxy. Search function be with me *prays*

I don't think I wrote anything noteworthy on that. (assuming I ever did/do) TG is pretty out in the open with its relatively themes but for me, never to the point of being overbearing. (unlike certain other kheE khVe khA things) I remember loving how even characters I assumed to be minor, got a proper conclusion to their stories that were spun in the background of Watashi's and across a near a dozen of resets and how they had their own involvement in what the show was trying to tell, also how much of other stuff that happened in the episodic material was brought back for the finale.

Oh crap, not yet, I have 11 and 12 left, I didn't get to watch much when I was on vaca, so I shlikd finish up the next couple days.

I see, enjoy it then !

I'm kind of confused what the people upset at HxH: The Titty One were expecting going into it. Just one look at the PV, hell one look at the main advertisement should tell you what to expect. It's like being disappointed that "College Girls Fuckfest Spring Break 2016" didn't have good world building.

I felt College Girls Fuckfest Spring Break 2016 had good character development tho.

I wouldn't have complained but it was the mystery of the world outside the fuckfest that made CGFSB 2014 and 15 so good. Expanding on the background elements only weakened the overall narrative imo.

Its really not that any of us are disappointed. As I said, its a perfect look as to why these kinds of tropes and super generic parts don't work at face value and need more than just the parts to work.

We've had fun, entertaining, and some downright good ecchi shows (or for that matter, combat-ecchi shows) in the past, so to talk about why this show doesn't stack up isn't to be disappointed or to even be misguided. Rather, I think its healthy to talk about why this show doesn't work and why those shows did. Why we enjoy some, and not others. And if we were taking main advertaising at face value, we wouldn't have had the wildly different opinions for Asterisk wars and Rakudai that we did, despite both being cut from the same cloth, so to speak. Hell, even if we do go with the porn example you brought up, then I would like to point out that some porn is legit boring and a slog to watch. Unfappable as some might say.

at least, thats my 2 cents on it.

Your search-fu is weak.

Well, I was searching for all episode impressions so I started with 1 and it was too obnoxious.

But, final impressions are best anyways, so, much appreciated.

So did you actually care about characters like Higuchi and Jōgasaki? They seemed entirely too ludicrous to be interesting to me outside of their comedic involvement. By the end I simply didn't care that they followed through with their own goals, they never really mattered I felt.

Fake H x H's biggest sin is taking that acronym. Imagine someone making the title for a ecchi title and specifically naming it so it would have the acronym DBZ.

Wait, did Asterisk Wars or Rakudai end up actually being good?

Speaking of Twin Star Exorcist, how have the last few episodes been ? I'm a few episodes behind, kinda lost interest and forgot about this show during the season, and i'm wondering if it's worth catching up?

Asterisk wars ended up being middle of the road. Not bad, not great.
Rakudai did a lot more to mix up its formula. Some of those things hit the mark, some missed. It ended up being rather enjoyable I found.

Which ended up being surprising since they pretty much share the same first episode. They are radically different shows though

Uhh after the last episode I think I did ? Somewhat ? I think what I liked about them the most was that I relegated them to those irrelevant, one note, comedic, background characters only for the show to directly call me out on that and provide them (again IIRC I remember Higuchi story fairly well, not so much with the latter) with their own story arcs of sort that were there from beginning even if I didn't (want to) see them. I'd call being the vehicle for delivering one of show's key themes "mattering".

I dropped Twin Star Exorcist the moment I heard it was 50 episodes. Didn't seem like something I would care to watch a year of.

New OP looks pretty cool. Probably still gonna wait until it's finished to see if it's worth picking back up.

Berserk FINAL IMPRESSIONS

Big spoilers, not all are marked because it's from 1997:

+The music in this show
well everything by susumu hirasawa
is sublime, and I genuinely wasn't expecting Hirasawa's typical synth and sample driven style to gel quite as well with the setting as it does. Forces is the most well known song from the show, but the other incidental themes are great too, like Guts, Ghosts and Murder. One thing I thought was particularly noticeable is that the show didn't overuse the soundtrack - there are frequently long stretches with no music at all, with music only really being used to punctuate important scenes. The OP is still shit though.

+Guts is a far more interesting character than I was envisioning him being. His big sword fairly obviously symbolises his dedication to violence (I mean he more or less says so himself, the sword always being by his side and all) since that's all he's ever known, which causes him to underestimate his importance to those around him, especially Griffith and Casca. Him being blind to Casca's feelings until he returns to the Band of the Hawk after a year long sabbatical, as well as being convinced that Griffith wouldn't care if he left is telling of how little he values himself. The series seems sort of like a journey of self-discovery for Guts, and by the end he finally does have something to fight for, even if that thing is wanting to murder Griffith.

+Casca might be my favourite character of them all. She's constantly tortured by her gender, and throughout the show characters often define her by the fact that she's a woman, rather than a skilled fighter and commander. It's only those close to her who see beyond that. One line of dialogue that sticks out to me is when she says to Guts that she "didn't ask to be born a woman", which is fairly poignant because the majority of the problems that befall her only do so because she's female - for instance, she wouldn't have become a liability in battle were it not for her period. As such she is usually mocked for taking on what is traditionally a male role, and her enemies take all the chances they can get to use that as a weapon against her, be it the threat of being made a prostitute if captured or some other form of sexual abuse otherwise. She deliberately wears masculine clothing and avoids "girlish" features, because in her mind it probably would be better if she were a man.

-...that being said, I didn't like how frequently the threat rape and sexual abuse was used against Casca. The show did a very good job of making the scenes where this happened incredibly uncomfortable to watch, as well as avoiding much in the way of sexualisation, but to me it sometimes undermined her strength and instead made her out as someone who needs to be protected rather than someone who can hold her own. Even the
demons at the feast try to rape her before they eat her even though they should only be concerned with taking as many sacrifices as they can.
To be fair the show usually gives a reason why Casca is unable to fight as proficiently in various circumstances, but it sometimes seemed contrived that the worst case scenario for Casca was usually rape, then death, rather than just death.

+The painted backgrounds are wonderful - I really like the art direction for the show in general (the Eclipse is stunningly horrifying and completely alien compared to what we see for the entire rest of the show), but some sections are just fantastic:

(Not my pictures, the rest of the album can be found here.)
I believe someone mentioned in this thread that these stills are often used in the place of actual animation when fight scenes occur - this is indeed true but they're so well done that I don't even mind.

-I still think the ending left something to be desired. I basically said this yesterday but it leaves a number of threads from the final few episodes unresolved, like
what happens to Rickert, how Guts escapes the Eclipse and where Casca ended up after the final scene. It literally fades to credits in the middle of Guts being forced to watch Femto rape Casca - it's like there's several scenes that were supposed to be there but were then cut because they didn't have time to put them in, so we instead have a weird gap where one moment Guts is pinned to the floor by a demon and the next he's leaving the Blacksmith's hut to exact his revenge on Griffith, with no link between the two.

The show as a whole was still fantastic though. I actually binge-watched through to the end from episode 9 yesterday, which I almost never do. If you haven't seen this and all the talk of the 2016 one has you interested (I watched a bit of it and the CGI is depressing), go and watch it!

Baccano 3

So now it's known what and how Firo and co likely got the ability to regenerate from any wound. The question is why were they able to obtain it in the first place?

Is Calligraphy something that is actually something that could be made into a profession? Like one that pays the bills? Do companies actually pay calligraphers to make calligraphies of their movie and book titles?

I don't know what's happening or why but the pictures are pretty to look at.

What's the anime situation with this thing anyhow? I know it's odd which is why I'm reading it instead.

The 1997 anime only covers the Golden Age arc and a tiny bit of the Black Swordsman arc. From my understanding, the three movies cover more or less the same thing, and the currently airing anime is focusing on the Conviction arc and beyond.

If Yotsuba&! was made into an anime, would you want Yotsuba to be voiced by an established adult Seiyuu or someone around Yotsuba's own age?

I'm watching Barakamon right now and I have gotten quite fond of Naru's voice acting. The only other show like this is the new Inazuma cooking show, and while cute the acting is definitely a bit more rough around the edges.

If it was the same child voice actor as Naru, I would be a-OK with that!

Honestly, considering how weird and odd Yotsuba is herself, even if the voice acting is rough, it would probably still fit the character.

Yes. It's still pretty important in Japanese and Islamic societies. I think after the invention of the Printing Press the tradition somewhat faded in the West but I'm not 100% sure. I believe in the 15th/14th century the majority of people who could write were Monks, Nobles, Merchants etc but Monks were the ones hand writing Bibles in a style that would be called calligraphy. I don't think its dead in the West because of some British movements but I'm fairly certain its seen as something more important among Japanese/Chinese and Muslims.

I'm not an expert on language though. This is just recalling some reading on Islamic Exegesis (Tafsir) and Hadith.

New Game 2

Good:
- Yep, that's a nomikai. Not sure whether or not I miss those.
- I can't believe that the "game footage" they showed is all 2D animation. Really impressive.

But yeah, it's very typical stuff, as I'd said about the first episode. No real surprises anywhere, and all the comedy feels cut from the same blueprint. I don't think I'll go back to it.

Orange 2

I'm really impressed by the dialogue in this show. Naho and her friends, with all their teasing and banter, feel so much more like how people actually talk than what passes for writing in most anime. That goes a long way towards making me care about them as a group, which is what matters here for the plot's hook to have any meaning.

This episode also really sets up the dramatic stakes of the show even moreso than the first one did, and I think it has me hooked.

Barakamon Episode 6

LMAO at the ending with the Fujoshi girl. Also I love how the one villager is now always holding one of the stray cats

I think I took some issue with that messaging (and the 'enjoy your life' one) in Tatami Galaxy because. Everyone does matter, but pretty much all of these side characters with the exception of Akachi and Hanuki they all made his life drastically worse or at least aided in the downwards spiral. So when he looks at them fondly while being stuck in that strange tatami-verse, it feels unearned. Yes, these people mattered and you should just live out the life you do, however, while those miserable alternate timelines indeed look preferable compared to literally being trapped in the tatami-verse, in actually these people were still largely bad for you.

I dunno. The messages seem to be too broad and not particularly well supported by the show itself.

I love how Gil drops two pretty big revelations in a single sentence, and Illya's so focused that she doesn't seem to notice or care.

Ramen shop Kirei is the absolute best.

Speaking of HxH (not the new hotness), should I start with the old series or the more recent one from 2011?

2011

The first arc is probably better in the 1999 series, but everything starting from Heaven's Arena is just as good or better in the 2011 version. Plus it just covers much more of the story, including the best arc in the series.

You'd probably agree with this, but I'd just like to bounce off this comment by saying that imitating the way real people speak is not always a necessary goal for a fictional narrative. Particularly in animation, where you often have exaggerated comedy and fantastical settings, presenting a world and characters that are quite different from real life can be a worthwhile endeavor. Of course, for a show like Orange, a grounded drama focused on mundane character interactions, having the characters feel real is an asset.

Speaking of HxH (not the new hotness), should I start with the old series or the more recent one from 2011?

Start with the 1999 anime. There is no question that Hunter X Hunter 1999 treats everything up to the Yorkshin arc much better than the 2011 series.

This
promised day
sure is lasting a long time :p

A decent episode with some great moments (May's minoe fight scene was great) though got to wonder why Edward didn't just create a raised platform when they were
surrounded by the zombie legion.
And considering the amount of stick she gives him, I'm glad to see
Armstrong come back to save Olivia.

After seeing all 5 ops and all 5 eds now, going to say the third one is my favourite opening with both the first and fourth credits my favourite ending. Might change though as I hear more of this opening.

Asterisk War final arc was pretty interesting however, the anime ended up being another read the manga to figure out the big things that are being teased, if anything it was good enough to get me to preorder the LN.

Failure senpai wasnt really memorable, Im already forgetting the anime.
