Damn that ending... One thing I'm sad they're omitting is how Ikta is actually much more of a sloth. In the manga, when Yatori goes to wake him up, she crosses a girl leaving his room. Also at the end, he's more in a "leave me alone so I can at least enjoy the food" mood. Although for the latter, it was a bit more fitting having Yatori stay with him.

I'm glad the show seems to be getting a good reception here. I think they have enough material for this to go 2-cour and it would be amazing if it happens.

Cardfight!! Vanguard G STRIDE GATE Episode 33 (Engdub)

Well though they always do girl power episodes, this one was at least different since it was depressed Tokoha. I didnt really understand her development through it but at least were done with that.

Kamui scene with Ibuki was best.

91 Days 2

I like how Avilio clearly doesn't have this perfectly planned out, but
already crossed someone off his list.
That said, I'm not sure why his buddy is sticking around.

If I was him I would have split by now.

Finished first season Bungo Stray Dogs. The show isn't really good, like, as an overall thing? But it's fun on a moment to moment basis. So I keep watching. I dunno I'm a bad person.

I also watched the FFXV Brotherhood three episodes thingy, just for funsies, and it was surprisingly not completely terrible, although a bit shallow, especially compared to what it seemed to actually WANT to convey with each episode. At any rate, I seem to be the only one I know looking forward to that game, so I guess it makes sense I'd watch the anime.

Latest Jojo ep was rad, if clearly not super relevant to the main plot. Man part 4 is just so much better than part 3. Still really annoyed by the SOLID BLACK EVERYTHING censoring. ):<

The thing about Brotherhood is that its really not trying to convey anything. Its really just a set of character intros for the main cast (and some of the sub-cast). As a set of character intros, I think its quite good. I think a lot of people are expecting full fledged anime-episodes so to speak from this, when that's not really the purpose, I think.

Well, uh, I disagree on account of it's conveying (or, more accurately, making an attempt at conveying) the exact thing you describe in your second sentence. It just doesn't do it all that well.

Handa-Kun episode 2

I feel like I should be liking this more than I should. I mean, I chuckled at a few scenes, but I didn't find it quite as funny as the first episode and surely not as much as others in this thread. I think that might be because of the simple art direction. I think its working against this show somehow. I'll still say that this is some good fun, but I feel like I should be having more fun that I am.

Well, uh, I disagree on account of it's conveying the exact things you describe in the rest of your post. It just doesn't do it all that well.

Sorry, by anything I was meaning anything but base-level character introductions. :S

It undeniably tries to show the connections Noct has with each of the other characters. It does this... okay. It's just very shallow (especially in the case of Prompto!) and ultimately comes off as something a kid in high school might write to show a deep relationship.

At least it's not as pointless as the Platinum demo's short story.

I still haven't tried. I tried a few manga chapters and found it bad and without everything I liked about Barakamon. Maybe I will like it in anime form though.

Don't watch it expecting more Barakamon, it's just another High School themed comedy only tangentially related to it.

woohooo!

also, I'm thinking about picking one or two more shows, what would you recommend? I'm considering 91 days and ReLIFE.

Amanchu is something I'd watch after it completes airing. Not too sure if Battery will interest me.

(already watching New Game and Mob Psycho 100)

If you have premium, then you could finish ReLIFE right now (i can send you a guest pass if you need one. PM me if you do). All episodes are already on crunchyroll.

Haven't tried out 91 days yet because I'm playing the long game with that one. We don't know its length so I plan on doing binge bursts of half a cour.

okay, it was a sample clip/trial.

I thought it was region locked so I didn't bother checking out earlier but it seems to have a world wide license. Generally though, I doubt a guest pass would bypass region lock.

I do have this 14 day free trial offer for premium, should I opt for that or does the guest pass have more to offer?

Guest pass is pretty much just a free 48 hour premium+ trial that premium users can give out to other people. The 14 day trial requires you to put in your CC iirc, while the guest pass doesn't.

A VPN can get you through CR's region lock though, unlike some other streaming sites I know.

So far, out of what I've watched Amanchu is probably my favorite out of what's aired this season. Very relaxing, and very pretty! While some people here are feeling annoyed at the faces, I don't mind them. In fact, they've made me laugh a few times already just out of how silly they looked in certain scenes! It was nice learning a few things about diving, too.

Mind you, I still need to watch Battery, so it's possible that my favorite might change. I think I'll get around to it tomorrow.

Hmm, 48 hours is alright but 14 days would be more comfortable for me, let me try my card and see.

I'm aware, a friend of mine uses it but safe VPNs with no data limit are a bit of an extra expense, not sure if I'm ready for such an investment yet but I am thinking. Generally don't find the need for a VPN for anything I do.

Handa-Kun 2

I really don't like the way this show looks. I'm not even talking about the boring looking backgrounds. The characters themselves are rarely animated in any interesting comedic way. They don't feel expressive, which is a problem for an animated comedy. Especially so for a comedy like this where the jokes aren't exactly coming fast and furious.

Re:Zero 1-15

This show is the very definition of a love/hate relationship for me. I don't think there has ever been a protagonist I've hated in an anime more than Subaru and I mostly watch shounens and harems (aka. low standards). Yet here I am, 15 episodes in.

A quick look around the internet seems to suggest that people see him as representing what a normal person would go through in a similar situation but considering that his character archetype is that of a traditional shounen protagonist (hero complex, immediate obsession with lead female, instantly views every other side character as a BFF, recklessly places themselves in situations they have little to no understanding of, ect.), that's just not something I can get behind. Virtually nothing he does correlates to what a real person would do in a similar situation.

The only difference I see from other shounen protagonist is that he has no real power so sucks at being a hero, which might have been an interesting subversion of the trope if not for the time powers that allow him to just fail over and over again until some third party randomly comes in and saves the day. I guess I expected him to start relying more on his wit and possibly incorporate his knowledge from the "real world" but at this point, I think it's safe to say that isn't going to happen.

That all said, I'm legitimately interested in the world, the politics around the ruler selection process, and I pretty much like all of side characters. Despite my hate for the MC, I'm still watching the show. If things keep going the way they are, I'm not sure I'll make it to the end but I'm gonna try. I strongly believe the show would be 100x better without Subaru but given the shows current success, I'm clearly of the minority opinion.

The show didn't beat around the bush and started off in a straight forward way - Kaizaki's predicament followed by the ReLIFE offer which he abruptly took up while he was drunk right in the first 5-10 minutes of the show(?).

I'm not a fan of such rushed beginnings but I'll play along until I reach the meat of the show i.e. the high school segment. First day of school was fun to watch albeit there was little in the way of surprises. I do appreciate the segment where he praises his teacher for being able to get a job at a young age. That was cool.

OH YEA, HE GOT A WINDOW SEAT.

I'm not entirely impressed with the presentation/direction but it's kind of an absurd setting to begin with although not unique to anime. It does feel kind of relaxing to watch. Looking forward to see where this goes.

This continues to be pretty funny. This has been a really poor year for comedy shows, so I'll take what I can get.

The problem is Konosuba already aired, so everything else is just a let down and cannot compare.

The big difference between this show and others is in that Subaru literally reaps what he sows when it comes to his stupid decisions. The dyde doesn't get the ass-pull victories or saves, he literally gets his ass handed to him both mentally and physically. The dude is a freakin' wreck mentally right now because of it now too..

Yep this is what makes it so good. Tbh I totally expected him to break his chains in episode 15 by sheer willpower but being the mc that he is that didn't happen, and it's refreshing, hopefully he becomes a badass later on though.

The BGM really reminds me of old school cartoons like Hey Arnold and Recess. I sense a similar light heartedness and laid back atmosphere in the show which is kind of what I like about it so far.

As for the main narrative, I'm not sure where this is going at all - there's no clear connection with the events and how it will help him get over his NEET life. The fact that all of his high school connections will forget he ever existed by the end of the year seems a bit harsh lol although it is understandable.

I like his interactions with Hishiro, very adorable to watch. More so her attempts to improve her social skills. Characters generally stick to standard archetypes, they haven't hinted on them going any further beyond that but it would be interesting obviously, otherwise that's alright I suppose, I'm just gonna keep my expectations low.

Just discovered the new D.Gray-Man anime started airing. I usually prefer to post in series threads, but there isn't one, so...

Episode 1
The opening is weaker than those of the first series, but not bad. The ending was alright. It's been years since I've watched the anime, but the new voices still felt a bit off. The new character art style also feels a bit off. The cinematography is also odd at times.

Now, it's been a long time since I read the chapters being adapted, but this feels a lot more straightforward than I remember it being in the manga, with Mana being plainly shown and the situation with Allen being explained clearly. At least, I've spent the last several chapters of the manga not quite knowing the connection between Allen and the 14th Noah, and now I know. Maybe I just forgot during the long breaks.

From the opening and ending, it looks like we'll get more stuff with the non-Allen non-Kanda characters, which I felt was greatly lacking in the manga after the point where the anime ended. Hopefully it follows through.

Episode 2
I'm surprised they're adapting the Phantom Thief G arc, since it's before the events of the first episode in the manga. It's a nice move, since the manga just goes from heavy stuff to more heavy stuff. IIRC. Like I said, it's been a while since I read these chapters.

This arc works well as a "return after a long break" story.

Overall, this anime seems like it will be pretty good. At the very least, I feel confident that the upcoming events will be handled in a less confusing way than in the manga.

I disagree. Shit does eventually work out in his favor, it just takes a few resets before it happens. As far as his mental state is concerned, his motivations and complete lack of anything resembling logic are so unbelievable at this point that I just can't bring myself to care.

The show you brought up, Konosuba, does a much better job with the lackluster hero MC imo. I would love Re:Zero if Kazuma was the MC but it would be a completely different show I suppose.

The way I interpreted the experiment is a way to force a person back into a point in their life that most defined them or formed them and then try to build them up again. Building confidence, gain the ability to interact, and reaffirm a sense of self. Even the whole "others won't remember you" is more or less part of the process as a way to see if someone would be willing to retain a sense of self beyond memories bonds. "Even if they don't remember you, would interacting with them mean anything". Something like that. Mind you, its still a silly concept, but I find it a little bit understandable.

You... did watch episode 15, right? its all spelled out with that one. Subaru is full of a useless and unfounded sense of pride. He thinks he's more than he is, and fixing the previous 2 resets only made him feel that more. He thinks he's the only one who can fix shit. Hell in the episodes just prior show exactly what his thinking is; how he was disappointed in not dying in episode 14 and Betelguese's acknowledging how Subaru wasn't "really broken" but was potentially just trying to seem broken, in a way (Though tbh we really don't know is Subaru's catatonic state in episode 15 was untrue or maybe was just him trying to shut himself off from it all).

If what I've read about this arc is true, then it will be quite a lot different than the prior arcs.

oh and from what i've read:
Things don't really go "in his favor" this arc. At least not in the way he would want.

I'd find it plausible if Kaizaki showed any signs of lacking in any of that - I mean he was a NEET but he was trying to find jobs, just couldn't get any. What he was "lacking" was not clear at all - maybe it will be revealed eventually but from the first episode, little was revealed.

ReLIFE 04

Damn, I really liked how Kariu descended into an antagonistic side. Each of the characters either excel in studies, empathy or athletics - three things that one expects from an ideal high school student. Kariu however is not the best at either of them but is far more balanced than the rest of them so she is constantly under a threat of competition. A little misunderstanding, in this case, Hishiro's forced smile giving the wrong impression broke her at some level and circumstance which was handled well. I am looking forward to the next episode to see where this goes.

Amanchu 1-2 - Pikari might just be too genki for me.

Alderamin 2 - Yep. Definitely a keeper for me. Really liking this. Is reminding me of Legend of the Legendary Heroes.

Things don't really go "in his favor" this arc. At least not in the way he would want.

I understand his mentality (hero complex - it's a staple of the genre), I just don't understand his complete refusal to grow in any way. He envisions himself as the stereotypical shounen protagonist but his physical capabilities prevent him from actually fulfilling that role. It's his persistence to keep pursuing that archetype, despite dying multiple times in the attempt, that annoys me. I just find it too unbelievable that he would be that dense and single-minded, even by anime standards, given the circumstances. I feel the character is defined by his metal breakdowns and everything in the story exist to create those moments.

And sadly, he isn't exactly wrong about being able to make things happen. His fumbling around during each reset eventually moves enough pieces around on the board to save him and those around them from their fate. So he ultimately is the hero of the story, which just makes his constant whining and poor decision making even more annoying. If he simply settled into his role as chess master, he would be a significantly better character.

Now, what would be interesting is that if it turned out that if Subaru wasn't there, everything would work out fine (since, thus far, it's been a third-party actually doing the saving) and it's actually his presence that's fucking everything up. Essentially being the villain without knowing it. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case.

Anyway, I certainly hope this arc breaks from the pattern but I'm not gonna get my hopes up. I at least appreciate that they didn't reset his argument with Emilia, so there's at least some hope that he'll have some character growth. I really just want to get to the leader selection "arc". That's the stuff that interest me the most right now.

Is that good or bad?
That's usually a bad thing.

ReLIFE 05

heh, pretty much what I predicted on Kariu, moreover she made up with Hishiro

Okay, I think I'm slowly seeing how it correlates with his NEET life - people tend to learn what they are lacking in at a personal or an academic level much later in their life, regret over decisions etc and this is despite being guided by teachers or parents. A NEET is a quintessential example of it, they understands this the most - what better candidate to teach students about adult life/real world than them haha.
