seriously, if I write it out, it's like the idea leaves my brain haha

update: I've only had 3 cigarettes today. Went up to a pack day for finals week :( that always happens, except last semester, where I quit. I had weed though, so that was my reward at the end of the night. Cigs have a way of just jumping into your hand, unlike weed.

I might add a goal-- finish Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace....
Going from a pack a day to just 3 is definitely a start.
And I'm sorry, as it's probably insensitive of me, but the bolded made me laugh. I immediately pictured a couple of lit cigarettes jumping into your hand saying "SMOOOOOOKE MEEEEEEE," over and over again.

I know, I'm a horrible person.

Love the progress, and I think another goal is a great idea if you've got the time for it. Maybe you're thinking if you've got time to smoke, you've got time to read? Sounds good to me.

So I went into this summer with the general goal of start running/working out again and eating healthier. Hopefully the end result is weight loss. But after this thread, I realized my goals don't really fit the SMART method.

Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely. So I decided to rethink out my plans.

Specific Goals? I hope to run a half marathon sometime in Oct (whenever Disney does theirs). This is really long term (just as I am really out of shape). My goal for this summer is to be able to start a half marathon training program. Sounds similar, but there is a bit of a distinction.

I've started running (5/4/12) and plan on running 5-7 days a week in order to be able to run 5 miles comfortably. By getting to this goal by around early august, then I can start on a specific half marathon training program.

Doubt I'll do daily updates, but when I remember, I'll post my progress. So far, I'll spend an hour alternating running/walking and go about 3 miles. Just starting with a weight training regiment (3 days a week) today.

Daily Goals? Yes - Run further, longer, or harder than I did the day before. Eat healthier, check labels, grain over white, chicken over steak, etc.
Written Out It's written here. I have a pretty great memory, so I haven't written it anywhere else.
Deadline First deadline is early August. Next one is October.

3. "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" by Ernest Hemingway: A writer on safari in Africa is close to death and looks back on his life regrettably in this short tale.

First things first, you will notice that I haven't put a link for an online text version. The other two texts were hosted by universities, with I presume, consent for scholarly work or something, for their students. This story however is given a huge amount of respect by publishers in terms of guarding it. Well because it still sells quite a bit I presume. This isn't a typical short story either. Some would call it a novelette. And I'd add that you ought to get a version with the italicized parts... well, italicized.

That out of the way, this is one of Hemingway's best. It borrows from his own life, according to some, and talks to writers as much as it comments on life, death, and all that lies in between.

Its written in his typical unfussy frank tone, about the stories we haven't written, or in Hemingway's case, the ones he never got a chance to write. The 'failed artist' as some crits have called it; and yet Hemingway gave this voiceless writer a stand and a mike so to speak. Hemingway mentioned in several interviews about this fear of dying with unfinished works remaining, so one can presume he shares a few things with the main protagonist.

In fact, I have similar ambitions, and this affected me somewhat more than I thought it would. Yes, the prose is phenomenal when it hits its stride, but at it's core, on a private level, this story asks one to question the life we have led and still lead; and we are guided in this tour by someone already well versed in it.

I've read the case for the symbolism at the end, I won't spoil it here, but I would like to say that I care not to side with any of the explanations offered. In fact this is one of those symbols, where it just doesn't matter to me. This story is synergism at work for me.

3/50 down.

47 to go.

Also, I hate that story! I've never read anything else of Hemingway's and I never plan to after reading that.

I wish we had some more daily updaters. I guess I'll be joining you next week though, but I don't think I really count.

You can't just say that and leave! What do you hate about it? length? did you find it boring? uninteresting?

edit: note what you say won't affect my judgement of you. However, if the op suddenly disappears...
Nah kidding. I'm not a great fan, and definitely not a fanboy. Dislike it at your own leisure; in fact it's cool. :P

It's been awhile since I've read it, and I've tried to not think about it because I didn't like it, but I wrote a paper on it, so maybe I can find that. I told the teacher I hated it, too.

Found it. I disliked the main character's personality. It was a chore to read through such a negative piece of writing. Knowing that the character was more than likely a reflection of the writer made me not want to waste my time ever again in the future. I didn't find it boring or anything, though.

Scratching my head at this one. Why would it be guarded like that? I mean, the dude's been dead 50 years. The only effect of getting it out on the internet would be allowing more people to read it--it'd hardly be preventing Hemingway from earning income.

I don't know is the honest answer. Admittedly I didn't look for long. I had to borrow from a friend of mine; he had a kind of study guide with it.

Does my being in the Uk have anything to do with it? I agree it's stupid that its not in the public domain.

edit: lol. Of course my location won't have an effect on it's release; what I meant was that perhaps users in the US might find it more readily availible on some uni severs or something. Google uk searches didn't bring up anyting on the first couple of pages. And whilst the others had a link on the wiki page it self, this one didn't.

Oh fair enough. I can see where you are coming from.

Anyway, I'll get my goals in here at some point. I'm trying to make them a little more organized and specific. Right now I'm looking at something along the lines of:

Fitness/Health:
-complete half-triathlon (June)
-work back up to 5-6 miles/day running with Vibrams
-eat healthier (mainly meaning not eating any of the "food" available at work)
Writing:
-write a short for submission to MOD2
-write one short/month for potential publication (i.e. non-GAF challenge stuff)
-complete a novel first draft
-get my (non-GAF) writing group rolling
Other:
-go through the exercises in Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain
-work on asking for numbers (vague, I know)
-get solid concept for next Toasties humorous speech

There are more, but this is a start.

Oh, and I'm going to try to follow in Ashes' footsteps and read those stories.

I've got that book! I half-assedly work through it. You should see some good results if you actually go through it correctly.

work on asking for numbers?

Is this a social thing?

Nevermind; I don't mean to pry.

And regarding the: write one short/month for potential publication.

If anybody has enough stories in their gaf challenges backlog that one could consider publishable, it'd be you.

Just don't ask me suggest any; I don't have a clue. But you got to fix at least half dozen of them and get them to the masses.

It refers to asking young ladies for phone numbers. Generally as a precursor to taking them out on a date. ;)

I put that as a goal because I'm single and haven't gone out on many dates recently. Well, I went out with a girl last night but... it didn't go too well. Heh.

Also because it often doesn't even occur to me. Two times in the last week I've met a nice, attractive girl, chatted/flirted a few minutes, and then left. And then five minutes later went "d'oh! should've gotten her number!"

Hey, thanks. :) Unfortunately if something has been up on the internet it's generally considered published already. I've taken down a few older stories for potential publication, but I think it's probably better to just write something new.

You guys started the new day without me. Awesome! xD

Just out of curiosity, what kind of length are some of these entries?

I was reading one of those dummy's guide books, and I kept wishing that the chapters themselves were shorter.

Ha ha. Very funny. ;)

I wasn't sure whether that was the title of a novel you were working or not. Or if it was actually something to do with phone numbers.

Here's my list of "to do" for the summer. It's actually quite extensive, a bit worried that I won't be able to keep up with all of it and my regular schedule.

Username: Miletius
Types of Goals: Fitness/Writing(work related)/Scholarship
Specific Goals?: Yes
Updates: Weekly (or as much as I'm able to do so)
Daily Goals?: Not really, no
Written Out: Yes
Deadline: Varies based on goal

Fitness: Lose 10 pounds by September 6th, my follow up appointment with my doctor. At the same time, hoping to gain some muscle mass. I think this is doable, I'm already on an solid food plan and weight lifting program. I've already lost about double that much since Jan and as long as I don't fall off the wagon I'll think make it.

Current Step: 8 AM Saturday Class (my first time at this class)

Writing: Draft, edit, and publish a bi-weekly article on my work blog. This will be an ongoing project but I will start it during the summer. This will be cross to my Yammer network. The article should run about 800-1200 words. The topic will change, but will focus on showcasing my research and analytical thinking skills.

Current Step: Researching for my First Article

Scholarship: Over the course of the summer I want to research local colleges with the intent of taking one or two community college classes in the Fall. I would like to this class to be related to my interests but not necessarily deal with my professional life. I'm not interested in pursing another degree at this time, purely for personal enrichment sort of stuff. I would also like it to be somewhat rigorous (i.e. not something that I feel like I wasted money paying for it and not getting a lot out of it.) Deadline is with class registration, so I assume later on in the summer.

Current Step: Have not started, internet research this weekend or early next week.

I also have vague plans on trying to plan a vacation for either later on in the summer or around Christmas time. Not sure if that really counts as a goal though.

Hello GAF! Summer is here!

This is the time of year when a lot of people have more free time because of schools breaks or taking vacations to enjoy the weather, and it's also the time of year where people want to do something new or change something about themselves.

Unfortunately, goals can be set easily, but attaining them is another matter entirely. Often we procrastinate and procrastinate, never getting anything done.

This thread is here to help!

No matter what your goal is, whether it's learning to draw or dropping a few inches around the waist for that trip to the beach, you're more than welcome to share it! I just want this to be a place where we can encourage each other to actually get busy and do something.

These are some Links about procrastination that I pulled straight from Google so that you didn't have to. Give them all a read if you find procrastination really weighs you down.

This is a guide for helping you to stop procrastination.

Official Fitness Thread of Triceps Kickbacks, Swiss Ball Squats, and Testosterdrama
This is the Fitness thread. I thought it'd be a good idea to have a link here since a lot of summer goals are going to be fitness related. If you're new to working out or just want some people to bounce ideas off of, give this thread a try.

Procrastination isn't the only enemy we face though. Sometimes we just forget about goals because we haven't yet gotten into the habit of doing them. Things like checking GAF, emails, and Facebook or watching TV or whatever will come first and get in the way of your goals because you do those things everyday. Hopefully this thread can be a gentle reminder that you have something you want to do this summer, and that NOW is as good a time as any to get started.

General Tips
1. Tell people about your goals. This thread is here for that, but doing it face to face with your friends and family sure isn't going to hurt.

2. Set a SPECIFIC GOAL with a clear time frame for meeting it.
Aiming to bench 250 lbs. in two months is better than the undefined working out more.

3. Break larger, abstract goals into smaller goals that lead into your ultimate victory.
Doing one self portrait and one landscape sketch everyday is better than improving your drawing skills.

4. Write your goals down on a piece of paper. Do it as if you were explaining to someone in a letter what your goals are. The idea is really to just get your thoughts on paper. Writing goals down makes you more likely to act on them.

5. Do it. Don't wait for the right time or right feeling to get started. You may never feel like, so just do it now. You want it enough to set it as a goal, so go achieve it.

Wall of Shame
No one, yet, but it's still early.

Good stuff. One powerful thing you can do, if you are procrastinating, is to tell yourself 100 times a day

" I have the motivation to workout...........etc"

It works, and saying I have, instead of I want, makes yourself believe that you already had the motivation all this time.

There's a certain extent to which you do the things your brain predicts you will do. Which sounds weird, I know. But it's true--if you can convince your brain that you have the motivation to work out, i.e. cause it to predict that you will work out, then you'll work out.

Deadline - September 1st.

Alright, day 1 is behind me. I accidentally slept in 2.5 hours, which ate into my time today, which was not good, considering I had stuff around the house to take care of as well. I was able to get my daily workout in just before I had to get ready for work. My 4 hours of drawing had to wait until afterwards, which meant around 11:40 last night. Ouch. Anyways, I just wrapped up those 4 hours. I'm bummed that I didn't finish before midnight, but I haven't sat down to seriously draw in far too long, and I wasn't about to miss my first day's goals completely. No soda either so far, and I plan to keep it that way. Normally when I try to quit, I make it to the two week mark or so, then cave-in, but I know that I can do it this time.

What really sucks is that I have to get up in about 2 hours. The plan for today is to get up at 6 (central), work out, then get ready for my friend's graduation ceremony. We'll go grab lunch after that, and when I get home from the celebrations, time permitting, I'll take a 4 hour nap, then get up and draw for a while. I want to draw at least 4 hours a day, but hopefully it'll be more than that when possible.

4. "The Fly" by Katherine Mansfield: This short story deals with some heavy themes, like death, truth and the horrors of war.

Criticism
Study notes (pdf)

Good lord! where do I start? 1922. The year it was published. I actually think as a secondary objective, one has to read a quick summary of her life here. She died: 9th Jan 1923.

For all that, the prose appeared initially to me to be cumbersome. But the story itself is so deceivingly simple; well, openly cunning, if you are a better reader than I. Not only is everything so very understated, the focal point of the story, hides within it many layers of social criticism.

What does the allegory (of the fly torture) mean? is she critiquing the position of man under god? Mansfield was shall we say, in her own words, quite rebellious in her younger years, and reached for more spiritual paths, during her long exhausting fight against the illness that eventually overcame her.

Or is she criticizing the governments that took men to the marshes of war? Her brother, a soldier of war, died in the time set for the death of the two sons in the story.

In the stories so far, I have written for my own eyes, quite a bit, but for this one, I'm left with only what others have already said:

"The story has elements found in many of Mansfield's other works, including the use of epiphany as the focal point of the narrative; greater concern with internal crisis than external crisis of plot; and use of symbolic patterning, with key ideas and images repeated to suggest the complexity of characters' motives and situations. Interpretations of the work abound, and is often interpreted as the author's autobiographical statement in her final months of life and how she viewed herself as a helpless victim of dark and unknown forces. The story also is a critique of war and patriarchy, as well as a metaphysical exploration of humans' place in the world. All interpretations, however, seem to concur that “The Fly” is perhaps the darkest and most haunting treatment of human corruption in Mansfield's literary oeuvre, as well as and one of the starkest expressions of post-World War I existential helplessness and despair"

In the end, I am glad that I'm in agreement with other critics. Like the person whose essay I have linked above, says:

Most critics acknowledge that “The Fly” is not one of Mansfield's strongest works, and some have even suggested that it is the story's flaws that make it an interesting subject of scrutiny. However, the work continues to enjoy a reputation as one of Mansfield's most famous stories, and is regarded as a fine example of the complexity of method that is the author's great contribution to the short story form.

Specific Goals?

There's loads i want to do but i think it'll be way more managable and successful if i break it down to four.

With fitness i want to continue to do at least 30 minutes of workout every day. I started this a couple of weeks back when i found a copy of EA Sports Active for the Wii in a bashed up box for £6, and have been using that to a good egree of success since but i want to persist, ramp up the workload, really make it parts of my routine then expand to running regularly and doing pressups+squats while i'm watching tv too.

I feel like i don't read enough books and my attention span is terrible, so i want to try and read at least a book a fortnight to expand my perspective and feel like i've achieved something attention-wise. I have lots of good books left unread or borrowed from my family so this shouldn't be too expensive.

Save money by limiting the buying of new videogames and focusing on my backlog.

I recently became a vegetarian so most of my previous cooking knowledge has been throw out of the window and i'm left with only a few dishes to make. I'm going to try cooking one new dish a week through the summer and develop the ones i like so i get good at them so when i have less time after summer eating can be more fun.

Updates: I'm starting all but the reading and cooking now, with those two when my exams end at the end of the month. Will go for weekly updates.
Daily Goals? Yes. Working out and reading every day.
Written Out: They are now!

liking ashes' idea of reading through the short story list, especially after reading his posts, tempted by doing that too but i think i'll see how i get on with what i have to start with before committing to more.

I need to lose weight for sure, I just love food way too much. Also I am pretty busy. I have been doing like 2 of the P90x videos a week but that is not enough.

Gaf, how does one who hates running get into running without dreading my workout all day at work?

Day 1 of P90X complete! Started a day behind due to unforeseen circumstances, but got the hardest part over with (so to speak).

Can't wait to see the results this program will produce. Definitely feeling the burn already.

Let's reach our goals GAF!

Thread bump reminded me to update.

Doing cardio? Yes.

Losing weight? Yes. Down 4 pounds over a two week period. MM can you update me to a 15lb loss goal in the OP?

1. Get fucking jacked. I'm pretty happy with my body, except I have a layer of fat over my abs. Been hitting the gym 3 days a week, every week and am making progress. Just need to be patient.

2. Put a huge dent in my gaming and movie backlog. I have a huge list on my phone of games/films I want to finish/watch. So far, I've probably finished ~10 games out of a list of ~40.

Weighed in today.

Goals are going well. Ahead of schedule in many ways.
Workout a friend gave me kicked my butt but I'm bouncing back.

Also, another goal is to read more. Recommendations anyone?
I tend to read very heavy literature (religion, history) so some lighter stuff might be good.

On the reading queue:
-Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Heinlein
-Zombie Spaceship Wasteland by Patton Oswalt

Can't wait to just do me this summer, I haven't had much time for myself since I've had classes and work but know I'll have all the time in the world

Looks like you're set to enjoy your summer. Glad to have you on board with us!

Well, Days 2 and 3 were a bit of a struggle. I slept in an hour yesterday (for a total of 3 hours of sleep), which didn't leave me with time to work out before I left for my friend's graduation. I was able to draw for an hour while waiting around at the ceremony, but I ended up catching up with friends the rest of the day, and I ended up crashing at a friend's apartment last night, meaning that I never got to exercise like I wanted to or draw as much as I planned.

The work out plan I've been following allows for a day of rest each week, so that wasn't too big of a deal, but today I had to make up for lost time drawing. I got back to my apartment late this afternoon, worked out and then drew for 7 hours. I'm still on track, but the first couple of days have been a struggle. I do suspect, however, that I'll get into a groove soon, and be a little better with time management. I'll certainly need to be, as summer courses start up next month. I also would like to be drawing more than the bare minimum that I've set for myself when possible.
