I'm more surprised he ended up with anyone, tbh. The whole thing of the arc is that she grew as a person, and she presented him with the opportunity to do so as well, but then he was too scared to join her in a happier life, choosing instead to stick with his own twisted pride instead.
She really was the best character of the series, and it was kind of obvious that they had something the others didn't. Still hoped for yui tho because tomboy best trope.
Season 3 was really the first time I was actually way more impacted by the anime than the manga, largely because it was the first season with more going on than just entertaining and self aware harem shenanigans.
