Super Best Friends Thread 5: There's a Skeleton Inside Each of Us

That was when I realized
we'd passed into the world of holy fuck what is happening. I watched EVA without any idea of it's reputation for being a mindfuck. That scene is really memorable for me.

I expected a normal show when I watched it, actually. The same happened with Akira like 5 months ago. Had no idea what I'd gotten into.
It was less of a mindfuck for me and more an indication of "this shit from both an in universe and production angle is going to shit and we're just going to ride it out."

Super Robot Wars always makes Eva better.

Except when it can't decided whether to classify the Evas as Real or Super

^ looks hood, I've got the a Taito version of her from P4A, I kinda hope they do another line of figures for Ultimax or at least the new comers. They were not the most expensive things but still look pretty good
You just wanna keep him until you have the compendium.
I like your typo, by the way.
I think FES just auto registers him, I don't know about vanilla or p3p so yeah best to be safe
FES does not auto register him. I know since I played it recently.
I'm getting conflicting tales from the Internet and my memory but I'll believe you since you played it recently

Anyway I'm out, night friend

I really don't know what you're talking about. I marathoned EVA 2 summers ago.

remember the episode before the last 2 big ones On the show? E of E is supposedly what Happens in the world and the show ending is what shinji is thinking about when the world is turned into LCL/Tang/OJ.

Honestly? No I didn't. It left me confused and disappointment like the TV show ending. Only this time
Everybody is dead.

I stopped caring about it halfway through the movie. It was a pretty good comedy when I accepted how dumb the movie got.

Edit: the beginning was easily the most hilarious part though.

End of E was something...

Yeah, I just felt kind of meh about the whole thing. It not for everyone and I don't expect everyone to like it. There is no face value in anything, which is actually part of its problem. But I'm not going into another Eva talk.

Sometimes I feel like I'm a shallow or dumb person for not "getting" EVA.

You're not.I get it, it's a review of the human condition mascaraeding as a deconstruction of a Robot show. It's perfectly fine to be disappointed in it if it didn't deliver what you expected it considering the show starts out far different then where it ends.

I knew what I was getting into the moment I started watching it. NGE is almost 20 years old. I almost expected it to all click at some point but I guess I had to be a 20 something otaku living in the 1990s Japan to understand the ending more.

You're not, I personally just think the whole psychological/symbolism nonsense in it is just so way over the top I do not care for it one bit.

It's for people who just really want to watch crazy batshit nonsense that happens to involve Mecha.

Frankly, I find Drakengard to be a better attempt at deconstruction and surreal storytelling than Eva is if only because that game knew EXACTLY what it was from the start and kept it that way, compared to Eva's change of focus halfway through and their budget starting to disappear. That and the characters were fucked up in a way I could get behind.

Don't be. And I'll hit the first person who gives you shit for it, because not getting some anime such as EVA gives those hardcore animu fan carte Blanche to dismiss and treat other people who don't get it like shit.

If there's anything I will always fight and rail against, it's elitism of any kind.

There's tons to get and not get. Regardless of what you think of the quality, there're a lot of layers and symbolism that require some thought to understand.

Some thought and also a few more views imo. I might rewatch it since I missed a plethora of symbolism and deeper things in my first viewing.

Edit: TIme to finally catch up on anime. First stop, Barakamon.

Its possible, but I don't know how the anime industry decides on greenlitting second seasons or sequels.

I think aside from ratings it's base on DVD and merch sales, but shits weird.

Like aaron said. Also, BDs. They do the exact same in america. If they get enough sales they make another season.

Does everyone know the show Nichijou? Not the daily lives of highschool boys one. That one did awful in terms of sales and loss money and they'll never make another season of that.

No

Its an anime trying to be smarter than it is... and its not very good at it. You saying its totally deep guys isn't gonna convince me, I don't think its deep... nor do I think its good.

Yep. Another worth mentioning is Kokoro Connect and the video that killed their sales.. I wish it didnt happen.. i could've had a second season to watch.. ;_;

Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
Not everyone has the same opinions, but that's cool

Out of curiosity, what don't you like about the series?

Well, it is deep. Like I said, regardless of whether you think it does it well or not, there are a lot of layers and symbolism. That is undeniable and pretty much fact. The quality of how they execute it is subjective, but it is factually deep, since deep isn't a statement on quality.

saw evangelion for the first time a couple months back and had very mixed feelings about it, but just hearing the context of it being the creator of the whole "reluctant hero" anime trope, in a period oversaturated with hot blooded protagonist's, really puts the whole series in a much better light for me.

Also first ever post on Gaf, heya fellas!

It's certainly not for everyone, but it's by no means a poorly made series.

And welcome! Don't forget, your skeleton is here forever.

Welcome to BestGAF. There were shameless events in the past, but now the future is skeletons.

i actually like the series as a whole, surprisingly my biggest problem actually wasn't shinji, but more how the last few episodes and ending (both show and movie) really just went completely off the rails with next to no explanation about anything.
the pure coolness of the angels and actual plot of the show had me far more interested than the characters introspection, and the ending seemed to throw away the plot to focus entirely on the phychodrama. i can see why and how some people would have preferred that, but not me.

also, if my skeleton is stuck here, then who will be keeping tabs on my skin! think of all the villainous acts it might commit!

The thing about the EoE ending is that it actually does end the angel plot, it was all foreshadowed from the get go, it's all just wrapped in a fuck load of crazy visuals and it kind comes out of nowhere if you don't have information going in, so it can easily seem like it answers nothing and is just nonsense.

either way i think im really going to like it here.

With that list, yeah, you'll do just fine.

You know, I just remembered what he was talking about. We had a discussion earlier of what length of socks you prefer on a girl and we all unanimously agreed thigh highs are the best.
