Oh god they were pole dancing too...
Now my history is tainted with that.

We got the memo? I missive missed it.

EVA in MGS3 I never felt was a character treated with fan service. Maybe I'm oblivious to it but I would think a double agent spy would use her sexuality to exploit men, which is something additional to her character and not fan service in the general sense.

I think of fan service when I watch TTGL or DBZ and watch a woman's boobs bounce very awkwardly and out of place in a shot.

That's why it's good, because it isn't actually exploitative fanservice. It's a part of the story and character and it actually serves a purpose.
I wanted to add that I didn't consider it fanservice, but it technically is, considering how most of MGS is sexy by design.

A great one is in early One Piece, where Nami seduces the dudes to steal the ship, but all she does is tug on her collar a bit and tells them to turn around so she can change clothes.
If it were modern One Piece, she would have stripped and bounced everywhere.

Man do I love pre- Grand Line One Piece.

Another good example of good fanservice is later in the game when you meet Johnny in the jail in Groznyj Grad.

A whole clan of Johnny's...

Your avatar makes this perfection, I can't read that line without hearing it.

Somebody read my stuff once. Here's a quick visualization of what that was like.

It must be super good if it turns people into Skeleton man.

Heh. Being suggestive is cool too.
Being blatant is terrible.

MGS has everyone in that world almost really good looking. Even AKIBA and Raiden are attractive dudes, so maybe your views of fan service and mine will vary slightly.

I treat fan service as anything intentionally produced to appeal to the fanbase and has no place within the world continuity, which can include gratuitous sex appeal and gratuitous violence.

Ok, I'll keep that in mind.

One point I'll make. You should work on your hook, and explain the setting? It was a little hard to imagine the place the scenes are taking place when all I know is that it's a stainless city, and a non de script building.

Well, I didn't wan to front load it too much with detail, since the entire first Chapter could have easily turned into an Exposition dump.

Though I do think I'm better writing in more current settings. I think my best work was the 9 chapter long story. Though that's actually because it's been in and out of edits and actually got enough reviews for me to be aware of some of its shortcomings.

It felt like there wasn't enough to leave anything for the imagination.

You could try the writing style of having a later scene happen in chapter 1 as a hook and then chapter 2 is slightly heavy on the setting.

How old is the chapter you linked?

Oh hell yes, they finally got a gun in Call of Cthulhu:DCoTE.

Took you guys forever, I was hoping you'd get to at least the big
Shoggoth
battle.

Yeah, MGS3 is probably my favorite MGS next to the first one SO GODDAMN GOOD. So good.

I can't help it, I am an MGS megafan in fact I probably won't change my avatar after The Phantom Pain releases, why you might ask? Fuck you, that's why. :p

Hmm, let me think. About 8 months old, that may not sound too old, but when I'm learning new stuff every 3 to 4 weeks I guess it's a big difference. I mostly just clean up grammar on my old stuff and not much else.

Ic ic. Would you rewrite it all if you wanted to?

High school DxD, why you so good.

Because it caters to everyone. People who want the extra large, the large, the medium, and the small.
except avoid the kiddie size.

That and To Love Ru just don't give a fuck.

Woah, woah, woah... NEVER forget about Maken-ki.

Well that's the problem, some stuff I would keep and other stuff I wouldn't but it would mess with the flow of the chapter. Since it would be two different styles of writing and what not. So either I would have to rewrite it all or none of it.

Though I'm more interesting on how you think about the characters and conversations.

I thought I gave okay detail of the dinning hall.

I just say that about MGS because Kojima and Yoji wanted every design to be sexy, be it male, female, or machine.
But yeah I'm of the same mindset about it as you. Which is why I never like dealing with these fangly interweb terms, you can never know if the other person has the same definition as you.

It's tropey as fuck, but it's fun. Also tits. The loli is best girl.

I haven't seen any of To Love Ru, but my understanding is that it's more attempting to be comedy romance? I'll take my sleazy shonen.

*approval nod*

Ive watched the first season of to love ru, and its def a comedy harem romance thing, but from what I know, it later goes into a more shonen(well seinen really) where there are more fights and is more story focused then it use to be kinda like medaka box(btw read medeaka box, so good). At the same time it gets raunchier and raunchier to the point that its a legit wonder how the author gets away with borderline porn

Hm. Thanks for confirming. Sounds like it's less my cup of tea, but I may check it out sometime maybe, I guess, probably not.
Oh ho ho, I already cried those tears. I think I posted in there, but I'd never defend loli shit, that's just begging to get banned.
There's the fine line where it's child characters or just body types.
The latter is awesome.

That ED that Aaron linked had a very, very surprising amount of fluid animation. I wonder how much money they spent on that.
More than you'd think, and less than you'd hope.

Actually that's top tier for the show, but somehow it has a half decent budget. It rarely looks bad outside of some occasional bad frames that are kinda common.

I can give you a thread of people you can hate: http://m.neogaf.com/showthread.php?t=515852&page=1

loli is attractive?? In what world is that ever so?

Big eyes creep me the fuck out and so do child-like bodies.

Loli artstyles definitely would prevent me from playing a game though and it's a shame because there are plenty of good games out there that use that artstyle. I just can't get over the whole idea of looking pre-pubescent.

Guys, stop we're heading into creep territory.

Like I said, I don't mind fanservice, I just would never write it myself.

GAF AFTER DARK!

writing fan service seems like a challenge unto itself. It's very close to toeing the line between regular fiction and erotic fiction if it's not written right.

I agree. It's over!

And I do think you should give it a try. It's a great learning experience for any writer and can help your style grow, since you'll have a better understanding of another aspect of what people enjoy in writing.

At that point you might as well overhaul the entire thing. Start from scratch, unless you are happy with what you have so far.

It felt like all the characters didn't have much personality, but that was probably due to it being chapter 1 and the conversations being short. Some of the characters sounded too similar? The little bits of explanation between each dialogue was weird.. It's like it's trying to inform the reader as a weird 3rd party being explained what's happening? Ruins some of the immersion imo.

Fair enough, though I hate writing in the first person. I think third limited is fine, though that was more of explaining the characters.

I might rewrite it sooner or later, I wouldn't mind showing you some of my better work though.
