what are the consequences of a flag/penalty.?

Depends on the penalty and where it is on the field. Usually 5 10 or 15 yards but if it's close to the goal line it'll be 1/2 the distance to the goal which can be inches and pass interference penalties can be like 50 yards as it's wherever the foul takes place. Also some pens are automatic 1st downs and others aren't. It's a beautiful complex and amazing game.
