Looks like we have another NSMBWii ordeal on our hands. Not so much love leading up to the release, but once it's in everyone's hands, there's nothing but praise.

Hope my order arrives before next Friday :(

Feels like the level design really starts to pop in world 4. So much cool stuff going on.

As someone who never owned a Wii or played the Galaxy games, im' in heaven.
That's the devil playing with your mind. You must play these games. Perfection.

I'd say even over the perfection. The two Galaxy games are that good.:D

This game is so much fun. All the way up to
Special World 6
.
The level design is so good. I find it hard to stop playing. I never move on from a level until a get both the gold flag and the 3 star coins.

Well I got some money from my brother for my birthday yesterday, so I went out last night and picked this game up. I'm at the end of World 4 at the moment, and so far I'm really impressed. It's been a long time since I've played a Mario game, but I'm enjoying the hell out of this one.

OMG THIS GAME IS PURE BLISS!!! (just came out today in the UK)

The controls are sublime! Really does feel like Super Mario World's physics in 3D! The levels are wonderfully creative (in that Galaxy like way) and the music is really nice so far. The only thing that concerns me is that each world doesn't seem to have many levels in each one. But I hear that the game isn't lacking in content so we'll see...

I'm only up to the end of world 2 but I'm loving it! Seems to be all that I hoped it would be (and it is in no way slow paced!) It's not just a mere "Galaxy 3", it's definitely its own thing!

Played till 2-3. Great, so far.
Very good graphics (even with 30fps and not 60, but the image is very clean, also, if not especially, in 3D), good music so far, great level design and an awesome Mario atmosphere. The controls are very tight, and the run button is justified by the level design itself. So far, great implementation of 3D, which IS linked to the level design.
Great game.

P.S. Level 2-3 is AMAZING.

Ha ha! Just noticed that your opinions are exactly the same as mine! (Even down to stopping on and highlighting the exact same level as me!)

Based on my friends reactions when I showed them Mario Land, this is a system seller. Two of them were sceptic until now with 3D and the console and now they want it :)

UK/Ireland-ers: Is HMV (as per usual) the cheapest place to get this? Thanks in advance...
If you can get to Morrisons they have it for £25 but given the /Ireland part I assume you were looking for an online retailer.

Will be home half of next week for Thanksgiving with no consoles and only mt iPad 2 and 3DS. I still need to finish OoT, but should I pick this up too?

What does the 3D button do with the d-pad? Switch between forward and backward depth? Seems very subtle.

It changes the focus point of the camera. The "Extended Depth" option pushes everything "into" the screen (so nothing pops out, but you get more depth), while the "Mario Focus" option focuses the camera on Mario (and you get less depth, but stuff pops out of the screen)

Personally, I prefer the Mario Focus option. When you get to the underground level in World 2, I'm sure you'll agree with me!

Thanks. Looking for a local pickup. We don't have Morrisons but my options are: HMV, GAME, Gamestop, Smyths, Currys. Usually HMV has the best day one deals here (excluding Tesco, occasionally...but my local Tesco doesn't do games).

I guess I could just not be lazy and do the rounds before buying... :p

I love that swing platform introduced in 5-3, the mechanics of it.
I also loved the top view in 5-2, it works perfectly and felt brand new to me in a platform game (though I'm sure a specialist will correct me in less than 5mn).

I definitely prefer this option as well. When I switched to the other one my first thought was, "oh okay, so like every other 3DS game." The Mario focus option just seems so much more unique and well done to me. You get pop and depth at the same time and everything just looks so clear.

This is the first 3DS game I've played where I truly thought the 3D added to the experience in a meaningful way aesthetically. OoT and Shadow Wars were also good but I didn't really mind playing those with the option off. With 3D Land it just feels so right.

Not just that, but it directly influences the gameplay in every single way. The level design is nothing like any other Mario game (and is nowhere near as playable in 2D as it is in 3D - the Mario sprite level is damn near impossible to play in 2D!, let alone the puzzle rooms!)

This is the 3DS' killer app for sure and the justification for S3D. No doubt about it.

Instead, I like playing with it, to see which is better for the level. For example, I've seen that for level 2-3 it's better the "entering" 3D, while for the last level of the second world, it's better the "exiting" one, for all the Bullet Bills coming to you...even Bullet Bills with Racoon Tails.

ok, so i just beat the game.

are you telling me that
the special worlds are 8 completely new worlds, with all new, unique levels? wow, if true. and what about the luigi thing, what's the deal with that?

I got this game on Wednesday and finished it once last night.

Endboss:
That Bowser fight was amazing. I really like the "running away"-style bos fights.

The game was REALLY EASY though. Hopefully as I progress farther into the postgame content (
I'm on S2 right now. Is Luigi technically different at all? His sliding seems different, but maybe it's just me.
) the game gets harder.

Indeed, the gameplay benefits tremendously from the 3D as well.

To me it is really quite incredible how it turned out because it's obvious that the game was made to fit the hardware (in traditional Nintendo fashion). Many probably thought the whole game would feel like it was just tailored to a gimmick and that the game would actually suffer because of it, but the exact opposite is somehow true. They somehow managed to simultaneously make a game that takes advantage of the 3D in a meaningful way (impressive on its own considering that to many it's just a gimmick) and make an absolutely spectacular Mario game that blends the best elements of the 2D and 3D games.

As I've said before in this thread, it's my favorite Mario ever.

Whichever is the default but I believe it's up.

The game is pretty short. Some levels take 30 seconds, while others might take 2-3 minutes or so. There are maybe 80 levels in the game? The second half of levels is definitely tougher, and is where the fun really starts.

He runs a bit slower, but jumps a bit farther, from what I can tell.

Apart from the game length, replay value is very high, knowing it takes few seconds to reach any level, all levels being a concentrate of fun. Also, speed runs.

No, you'll have more fun if you buy 40 fart apps and copyright infringing jumper games for your Ipad instead.

Yes.

Is there anyone in here that cant see 3D and is having trouble playing this game with 3D turned off? Or am I just nuts?

There are some levels (especially the ones where the camera is directly behind you) that I just cant seem to accurately judge my jumps and I spend a few minutes and a few deaths trying to get it right.

I havent checked the options yet to see if theres anything to change in there that might help me. Is there anything I can do in there?

Depends on what you consider "beating" it.

There are 8 standard worlds and it probably takes about 6 hours to run through all of them. After that (very minor spoilers at this point)
there are 8 more "special" worlds that feature some new levels and some remixes of the original ones. There are 3 star coins to collect in each level and you can also unlock and play as Luigi. If you do everything (beat all levels with both bros., get the top of the flag-pole in each level, get all star coins) you unlock a final level.

I've played about 10 hours and I still have a decent amount left to see.

This. I can already tell that this game is really well tailored to speed runs. (the level design, which is chock full of little shortcuts, and the roll jump move absoulutely scccrrrreeeeaaaammm "SPEED RUN ME!!!")

Just like DKCR.

Not really. There doesn't seem to be any extra options/assists for 2D. Though it features all of the typical 3D Mario jump assists (shadows etc) the game is very clearly designed for S3D. Good luck with 2-3!
you're gonna need it!

I'd say it took me closer to 2 hours to accomplish that. 3 at the most.

There's lots to do besides just gunning the 8 worlds, though.

I love the "tower" overhead levels in this game. Makes really good use of the 3D. You can really feel the depth of these levels. It almost gives you a sense of vertigo on some levels.

Rad.

Seriously? Either you were straight up flying or I just really suck at Mario games. I think it took me 5.

Lol, thats the one that made me start to realize something funky was going on. Im on World 5 now and loving the game but theres just that one issue bogging it down for me. Luckily, I have a ton of extra lives so a few deaths wont hurt.

I did see my first invincibility leaf yesterday. What a kick to the nuts that was :(

Finally got 5 stars, over 19 hours in. Still haven't beat Special 8-Crown though. I watched a Youtube video of a Japanese player a few times ... this level is way too long :(

Dunno. I died less than 10 times over the first 8 worlds. Died 3 or 4 times on 2-4 trying to get the coin above the floating block. -_-

Mario-GAF: So, does this game live up to the hype? Worth the price? Is the 3D really cool?

To be honest, this game (and MK7) is the reason why I bought a 3DS. Nintendo first-party games are what I buy Nintendo hardware for. I'm thinking about picking this game up after I finish Zelda SS, and before my Christimas trip to NY.

Thanks for your input.

I'm in the minority, but I'm pretty underwhelmed. The first 4 worlds were easy, conservative, and unimaginitive, in my mind. The levels have gotten progressively better since the start of the 5th world, though.

The game is definitely worth getting, but I wouldn't put it on the same level as something like NSMB Wii.

Yeah I probably died more than that. Now that I think about it though, I may have finished the first 8 worlds faster then I'm remembering. I didn't look at my play-time until I was on
Special world 3 or 4
and it was about 6 hours.

So yeah, I would say for the average person 3-5 hours seems like a more reasonable estimate.

I must have died more than I said I did. I'm at 50 lives lost...though I think 20 of those have come from S3-5. Where does it show your play time?

The glorious activity log. It's basically my favorite thing about the 3DS.

NSMB Wii bored me after 2 hours. To me this Mario Land is better by several levels of magnitude!

Never knew about the activity log.

Looks like I have 5 hours into the game so far. In that case, I'd say the main game must have taken me 3-3.5 hours.

Yeah seems like it's mostly a personal preference thing.

They released the last 3D mario on a handheld in 2004. Sure they released 2 2D and 2 3D Marios in that timespan for Wii/DS, but still!
