Super Mario 3D World |OT| Next-gen starts right meow!

My number of retries is humbling, but not surprising considering the death toll especially in multiplayer. I don't I remember dying this much in.a game since Super Meat Boy. Not that the difficulty is comparable.

Is the consecutive triple jump into a somersault not in this game? Like NSMBU?

Not in the game. It's like they wised up to all my Mario 64 bs that I like to exploit. On the one hand, it makes the game harder than most of the 3d marios, but on the other hand I feel like I have less freedom to come up with novel ways of finishing a stage.

Overall, probably for the best. I'm near the end and have been 100%ing as I go along, minus maybe 2 stages and still having a blast.

Oh God. The Trapeze stage took quite a bit of time until I managed. I kept dying in the same part near the flag pole. I haven't actually seen
Captain Toad
in that stage. Mind getting a screenshot?

Yeah, I can try when I get off work. I swear he's there, but I have no idea what for. Maybe I'm going crazy or something.

A friend just dropped by for a couple hours so I got to try co-op finally. So great. :)

We plowed through the levels a lot faster than I usually do on my own, haha. Of course, missed a few things along the way, so I'll have to go back.

I'm doing the whole game co-op with my wife. My plan is to go back solo and "clean up", because we frequently miss all the stars (we average around 2 per level, though), but we usually get the stamps.

The game is really fun both ways, honestly. I enjoy both a lot.

I don't think they've had Lakitu's camera since 64, but either way, as far as I know there's not an optical device in existence--including your eyes--that doesn't blur things at a distance when it's focused on closer things. The lack of distance blur in video games is similar to the early lack of textures and shading on polygons: unrealistic quirk of the medium due to hardware and engine limitations. It's very unrealistic to see an object 5 feet away and an object 100 feet away both with perfect clarity.

That being said, you prefer what you prefer, and that's fine. Just wanted to point out that it's not a "camera effect" like lens flare; it's a "visual" effect of real life, regardless of the optical device.

This is a bad argument because these games don't have eye-tracking. Wherever I look should not be blurry.

I'm having a ton of trouble with the final level. Maybe cuz I'm not using any items whatsoever.

AND FUCK BUNNIES. 30 in one go and a damn bunny is destroying me.

So Peach is basically easy mode on this game, huh?

I mean don't get me wrong, I'm having fun.. but I don't feel good about winning a few of these levels (like the second world rush level.. I think 4-Rush or whatever) nor any of my top of the flag poles.

It's like you don't have to be precise in jumping and you can shortcut your way through a lot of stuff.

Thinking about switching over to someone else.. any suggestions?

Toad seems to be the one you're looking for.

I usually do Random until I really need princess for flag pole help (or I go to a level to get a cat suit). or if a stamp switch is for a certain character.

Just finished with 4 shiny stars. I have all the green stars but 5 stamps are missing. I assume you have to
reach the top of the flagpole with all characters
to get them. What a great game though. For me, this represents a return to form for EAD Tokyo. Though good games, overall I was disappointed in Galaxy 2 and 3D Land. This game had some dull moments as well, but overall it was fantastic. Time will tell if it belongs in the same breath as SMB3, SMW, SM64, and SMG for me, but it is pretty close.

Did anyone else get absolutely DESTROYED by the
Crown/Special World
? The
Toad level
wasn't that bad, but the other two absolutely killed me. Over, and over, and over again. I probably spent more time on those two levels than any other entire WORLD in the game. I was definitely humbled. But it was all oh so fun. I tip my cap to you EAD Tokyo.

I haven't had much trouble at all getting gold flag poles with any characters. There was one fairly early in the game that was actually pretty tough, where you needed to climb the tree and them aim at the flag pole (then again if you have a cat character you could just climb it). Rest have been pretty simple though.

And naturally, I did just beat the game, and miss the jump to get the gold flag there. So I'll have to do that again.

Unlocked the
rocket ship
but haven't done anything with it yet. Does the game ever add anything to tell you which characters have beaten each course?

Man, I NEED the soundtrack for this game. On World 5 with the Mrs., and loving every minute of it. We had to use our first continue yesterday. You can burn through those lives pretty quickly with a couple of beers in you. . . xD

Ah, I loved that level so much. Even though I died a lot. It's a lot easier with another person, as your bound to have at least 4 characters (clones or otherwise) after one of those slides. I think I died more on the
chainlink
stage and the
trapeze stage
(only because I was trying to reach
Captain Toad...who is oh, by the way in the top left corner of the second-to-last trapeze portion if anyone's wondering
. I'm not sure what it gives you for getting up there, though, as I'd got all 3 green stars and the stamp at that point.

I LOST SO MANY LIVES IN THAT PART

Mostly because I eventually realized there's just no way to get both the green star coins and go back and get Captain Toad, as far as I could tell. The timing for jumping back just didn't work.

I've always been a Galaxy 1 girl. Galaxy 2...there were some gameplay improvements here and there, but overall Yoshi fell flat for me and the pacing felt off. I had more fun with Galaxy.

You might want to rectify that! Agreed though, great game.

uber late reply: Interesting. All of my friends say that Galaxy 2 is the leagues better than Galaxy 1. My main problem with Galaxy 1 is that once I reached 88 stars, I got really bored of the game. I have no idea why. I will try to play Galaxy 2 one day, and sunshine.

That's a fair point. But it seems to me that for most people, the gradiated depth of field blur is interpreted by their brains as representing depth. It's another depth input, in the absence of stereoscopic images. For me, and probably for many others, it's far less realistic for the entire picture to be in focus at all times.

The first-person view is great in previous Mario games because it allows you to observe the level in detail, which is essential for navigating a 3D environment. But that may be more a testament to the simplicity of 3D World's levels than anything else. Still, it's a feature that should be in the game, as it was in all previous 3D Mario titles.

It'd be nice to have, sure. I assume the reason they didn't include it was so they could focus all the rendering power and stage design in one direction, instead of having to make all the area around a stage polished and presentable as well. I could be wrong, maybe they got lazy, but considering how extremely polished the game is, I doubt that's the case, and we probably got something from the lack of first person that we otherwise wouldn't have had. Again, I could be wrong; I'm just speculating based off the level of polish the game exudes.

Aha! So there is
Captain Toad
on that level! I knew I wasn't crazy. Did you get to
him
? I'm really curious what happens if you do...I'm pretty sure it's not a stamp (I remember getting one earlier on in the level...and I got 3/3 green stars).

Spoilering this just in case (It's kind of a spoiler I guess)
Warp pipes exist! My brother found one that took him from World 1 to 2 without using the castle.

I guess that's a big thing XD Last edit I promise, the location:
it's in World 1-2

That is really cool. Good to see the game is also consistent.

Once again, the music in this 3D Mario is downright incredible, adding another facet to this god-tier game.

The remix of the 3D Land winter theme
Double Cherry Pass
the beat block disco song
the bowser casino music

Its bringing a smile to my face just typing out that list haha.

I think you either need the cat suit or some other way to make tricky jumps. I need to go back and try.

I feel like I am missing a bit by only playing as Mario the first time through the game, but, well, that's how I do these things. Mario games should start with Mario runthroughs.

I'm in the same boat, man.

Its a god damn 3D Mario game, I'm not going up against Bowser in the final battle with anyone except Mario.

But I can't wait to play some of these levels later on with other characters. I'm going for some game-breaking shortcuts with cat peach.

There's still two moves where I am trying to do them consistently/see the benefit.

One is rotating the analog stick 360 degrees and then jumping, letting you do a spin-jump. I think you jump a little higher, but I need to test it.

The other is, sometimes, after a ground pound, Mario will leap back in to the air higher than a regular jump immediately. I have yet to figure out how this works consistently.

Unless it's the Year of Luigi, in which case you start with Toad.

Go toad if you want a challenge he is the fastest. Mario is overall pretty average. Luigi is a high jumper so he is a little easier than the others. And peach + catsuit is basically god mode.

Playing 3 player on the level with the swimming dinosaur is a whole new level of hilarious. I played it on my own before playing with them so I wasn't sure how it would work with co op. It was easy on my own. When three of us have control? This ends up happening

Friend 1: Are we all controlling the speed?
Friend 2: I dunno
Me: I don't think so but try to help

No one does anything and as we approach that one hard turn near the stamp

Me: GUYS SLOW DOWN and TURN!
Friends: Suddenly pick up controllers "HUH?? Oh shit!"

We go flying off into the abyss.

All of us were laughing for a while. Oh man I can see this game having great times ahead with parties and small get togethers.

Did you guys know about the spin jump? You can jump much higher

My 4 year old figured it out first, then I kind of took it a step forward

spin like crazy in place, then jump. If you do it off of another players head, you can get some ridiculous height

Just wait until you get to the first Double Cherry level. It's insanity in multiplayer.

Haha same thing here, but once we figured out that we all control the dino, somebody kept sabotaging us. There were 4 of us and we were all laughing our asses off every the culprit sent us jumping off the edge. They never confessed and it was actually some good couch (anti)co-op fun!

Spin jump is actually a higher jump - there's hidden blocks in a few levels that let you skip some segments if you pull it off on them.

The ground pound spring seems to just be a timing thing - after Mario slams the ground but before he rises naturally, you can hit the jump button to spring immediately. But I don't have it in front of me to confirm that one.

It's funny how one of the happiest and fun games I've played have brought out so much hate and anger within people going by the threads on this board. I don't want this thread to turn all sour, but I just think it's fascinating the kind of controversy this game has brought.

@Dax: Forgot to ask in my previous comment, what makes Galaxy 1's pacing better than 2? I may go back to both games and try to finish them when dolphin decides to work well on my PC (I own both games).

EDIT regarding thread:I only finished
The last stage in star world 1 and the mystery house in star world 2, I am sad

Yeah, I really like this move. The height gain is significant. It's great for whacking the really tall Pokeys in the head with a tanooki suit, or reaching hard-to-get places. My favorite application so far has been:
On the snake boss (Hisstocrat), the spin jump actually gets you high enough that you can go behind him and just jump off the ground and do a cat dive, and you'll hit him. I just beat him super fast by jumping straight off the ground the whole time (except when I had to grab the cat suit).
The other is, sometimes, after a ground pound, Mario will leap back in to the air higher than a regular jump immediately. I have yet to figure out how this works consistently.
This seems to me to just be a quick-recovery move after the ground pound, if you time your jump right. The slight height gain is probably just to facilitate your escape from whatever you failed to kill with your pound.

Yeah, see above. It's a great move. Haven't tried it multiplayer yet, though. How do you get it to bounce off someone's head, since you have to be on the ground to start the spin? Do you just jump toward someone right next to you, and it will pop off their head immediately?

Is the spin jump higher than the backflip or side flip? It seems like they've all been pretty comparable in height so I'm curious as to what advantages one has over the other aside from ease and speed of execution.

So it's something like:
Spin Jump: Most height but requires space and time to execute
Side flip: Near instantaneous but you have turn around for a second to perform it, losing your momentum. Same height as backflip.
Backflip: Easy to perform but requires time to charge. Same height as side flip.

Is that about right?

That Challenge House was pretty brutal for me. I still haven't beaten it fully. I just beat the one before it last night and was very pleased to have done so (the one where you
dash through a series of areas.[/spoilers])

Dear lord. Don't think I'll be able to get to those other worlds cause the first stage of Mushroom is too hard for me to beat. :lol

For people that have beat this world. Are they all time trial based of levels you completed or are the rest new. Would love to know this as I just got here as well.
