Anyone remember if there are at least 2 easy SR points in the last 15 maps of 2nd OGs? I'm on map45 now and only have 39 SR points. The last few stages have been way too tough to get the SR points so I started slipping. Gonna be annoyed if I can't get at least 2 before I hit map60 to get the true ending...

http://www45.atwiki.jp/2ndsrwog/pages/135.html

Get Joshua and Rim to enter the site without fighting once: they can't even be targeted, and you can't get them inside the spaceships. Aside the first two lines, enemies won't move, so all you have to do is keep Joshua and Rim out of range.

http://www45.atwiki.jp/2ndsrwog/pages/140.html

You have to kill everyone except the bosses before the fourth turn. There are no reinforcements so it's easy even without using rengeki.

I feel like upgrade units are kind of hit or miss in OG SRW games.

Like XXBane is kind of cool I guess (funnelssssss) but combared to CROSSBONE HUCKBEIN it's kind of less cool. Then again Exia/Exia Repair -> OO Gundam suffered from the same thing. Hard to get more cool than Pirate Cloak Mecha. Also don't really like how XX has a football helmet face, that's weirrrrrddddd.

And then you have ones like Valsione R and it took me like 10 mins of comparing on google to even tell how it's different than the original Valsione. It's so similar it's like why bother redesigning it?

And like Ibis' upgrade sucks but all of her mecha since OG2 have been ugly plain looking real robots. Her storyline is ok I guess, but her mecha suck.

There are good upgrades here and there though. But yeah, sometimes it's hard to figure out how to make a "superior" looking unit.

I have to say, I like Ing a lot as a central character. He's got a great character design, is mysterious, has that good and psychopathic evil dual-side, is REALLY OVER 9000 powerful character, gets fairly cool mecha, has great music, a good voice. Definitely a good pick to kind of revolve the story around him for 2nd OGs. A lot of the OG characters are kind of plain and boring, so he's doing a good job.

Okay so it's not as flashy as Z2 or 2nd OG, but it's still something!

The script IS fully translated, though the bad news is that the script still needs to be edited. I advertised on /m/ for an editor and got a few bites but nobody seemed all that enthusiastic. It's not nearly as messy as my scripts for EX, 4, Gaiden, or Alpha though - it's not quite what I'd consider publishable quality, but it's still very well translated. The good news is that the technical work is basically done. There may be a few details that have slipped through the cracks, but it's stuff to work out during testing. If the script was finalized I could have this being playtested by Monday.

So, uh, if my /m/ editor doesn't come through, anyone want to take a crack at it?

Nice to see you here! Loved your work on Live-A-Live. :)

What does this post-translation editing work involve? Plain ol' text files, messing around with a hex editor, something else?...

Text files. Strings are comprised of a unique address marker (which you can ignore, but it's useful as a reference point if you need to draw my attention to something), a series of directives for the inserter application (these start with # and must be left alone), commented-out Japanese, and actual English text. The English has a few html-like tags associated with it - usually <line> to denote a linebreak (which you shouldn't need, as the game inserts them automatically where needed) sect> to denote a forced pause-and-wait-for-player-input-before-clearing-the-text-box, and <end> to denote the end of string - which should generally be left alone. Nothing more complicated than that. If I trust you enough I'll send a build package your way and you can both get context AND see your changes reflected in the rom :)

Here's what one of the more complicated strings looks like:
Code:
//[$020130]
#EMBWRITE($0E000)

The text *IS* somewhat out of order and there are regions of the file that are off-limits and really shouldn't be mucked with, probably not even by me, but I'll put together a list of the important bits. Basically if it looks like character dialog feel free to muck with it. If it looks like narrative or system text, it's out of bounds.

Just to clarify, what I'm looking for is more than just a basic grammar sweep but less than a 100% full rewrite. It should look fairly similar but maybe be a little more concise and sound more natural. It was translated by a non-native speaker, so some of it comes off a little stilted or awkward-sounding. And a couple of the text chunks simply do not fit in the space available to them, though they're only over by a little bit.

How the hell did I missed this thread?!

When I think of SRW, I always think of this nightmare... as if the stats and shooting range are not Godly enough, he also camps at the base!

so many (awful ;D ) memories. I remember going in on him with some overpowered real unit, thinking "what about now, douche!" and he would cut down all missiles, all funnells and all close quarter attacks. Evil.

Damnit, after spending parts of the game in 2nd OGs making sure everyone had their kill count, I hadn't looked at the wiki in a couple of months and figured I was good on all the secrets. Didn't realize you had to actually DO STUFF in map47 in addition to having the kill count to get Fort Gigas.

Didn't realize it until I was already at map50, 75 hours in, browsing the wiki and I only keep 1 save >_<

So uh, I watched the attacks on youtube, neat unit but how do they explain it in the story? Like "hey look we just got upgrades from the weapon box hanger; oh wait, now we can gattai into a super mech lets ditch those nm"

Or is it just like...not mentioned in the story and you acquire it in the intermission menu?

Also did SRW D have a real robot/SRW route where real robot got you these Meteor-upgrades and super route got you Fort Gigas?

It's been a while but in the game one of the scientists (don't remember if it's Joshua's friend from D, or the doctor who resurrected Shu and Axel, or the guy on the Excellence team) says that they acquired two new units (the Strega and something else) which can combine into one but that they didn't have enough time to configure them properly. He also said that if they wanted to deploy the two units separately they wouldn't be able to combine them into one during a mission. Which made me think that you could be able two deploy the new units...but you can't. Actually I think they are absent even from the in-game encyclopedia.

I think they acknowledged Forte Gigas for about 2 sentences after that stage and it's never brought up again. It's pretty much the Vysaga of the game. There's also one or two stages where Rim and Josh are force deployed and you can't use it.

I know you could choose between real or super in D, but I can't remember if it actually changed anything outside of what units you where using.

Pretty sure it's acknowledged in the story. They mention finding it and that it has to be sortied as a single unit, as I recall. It's one of the units that was being developed along with the other D units, kind of like how it was for MX. I can't remember exactly though.

Just about finished with 2nd OGs. Probably clear it in the next 2 weeks. Story-wise it's pretty solid in terms of OG coverage & movement outside the filler starting 17 maps. It's gotten me curious about 3rd OGs though.

Since they've gone ahead and covered a bit of Alpha 3 already now and it's not like Alpha 3 has THAT much story, plus with all the big console mainlines covered now and only the GBA/DS entries + LoE stuff (oh god, I hope we're not going to get a dozen maps of boring La Gies stuff in EVERY OG GAME from this point on because they keep pumping out supposedly-mediocre LoE sequels)...it really doesn't seem like they can do 3rd OGs with Alpha 3 being it's big main series if they want 3rd OGs being a huge 60+ map epic SRW.

Which makes me think they're gonna have to start doing Z1 in the next game. Maybe not as the main plot, and they don't have to finish it (they can do like half and then Z1 2nd half + all of Z2 as the main storyline in 4th OGs) but not really seeing any way of putting going into Z off at the speed they're going. Which is cool because it'll be interesting to see what they do with Asakim v. Masaki.

Anyhow I think it's about time for Z to wrap up with Z3 so they can move onto their next OG storyline. Hopefully it gets announced in the next year.

I'm really wondering what Dark Prison is going to cover. 25 maps is A LOT, but it seems like because of the time frame it can't really do anything interesting besides tease a few characters as they jump in, have some story, then jump back to the real world to await their 3rd OGs or 4th OGs entry in the storyline. Also I gotta wonder how big your party is going to be. If it's only like 4-10 units comprised of mainly Geshpents and soldiers from La Geis...that's going to be really boring to do 25 maps with. Sure OG Gaiden was short at ~35 maps but at least you had the entire OG crew + a couple of new cool entries with Compat Kaiser and the R storyline units. I dunno, just kind of hesitant about this DLC chapter; don't want to invest the 20-30 hours it'll take unless there's payoffs to justify it through story or units.

Also, can we talk about how ridiculously overpowered the XXbain is? He's like one-man-army aka. Chiriko. You stick him out front and he can't be hit, has huge range, doesn't use any EN, and does major damage. I have him lead and he literally kills all the grunts for me on counter attack enemy turn then I march in the rest of my team and finish off the big enemies.

Most units are pretty buff with the right setup still. It's not totally perfect but nigh perfect. Xexbein is hyper buff for sure though. But so was my Garmraid and cerberus, lol.

I suspect they'll be bringing in more off-shoot games over goign straight to the DS SRWs or Z1 though. I'm hoping ACE and Scramble Commander 2 make it in as they both have stories that could work.

Bebpo

Does Scramble Commander 2 have any original units?

I wouldn't mind ACE. The originals were pretty solid looking and I remember ACE2 having a decent story.

I really liked that D had a lot of OG units. Made it feel like a substantial inclusion in 2nd OGs. I don't know too many other SRW games that have a bunch of OG units besides Alpha 3. Even Z1 doesn't have very many. I think the lack of downtrend of minimal OG units and characters in licensed games is going to bite them in the ass eventually because of OG. Hopefully they are aware of this and Z3 and future SRW games will story having more OG stuff like the Alpha series did.

Shouta

Member
Yeah, Scramble Commander 2 has an OG unit (Habakiri) and its own char (Keiji Tachibana) and love interest. The unit itself is kinda is the only thing. It is kinda cool though in that, if I remember correctly, it actually sucks the life out of the pilot if they aren't seen as fit to sit in the cockpit. The base unit is pretty nice, the upgrade is a little fugly because of the additional parts.

ACE2 had a pretty decent story and I hope it means we also get ACE3 and the Ex-blau.

Hey so today I had an idea for a Super Robot Wars game and I wanted to hear what others were thinking. So the idea had was this: a SRW tabletop game. Kinda like Heroclix, each mecha would come with a card explaining its traits and powers, with fights determined by dice roll and parameters on the cards, right? The maps would be large enough for up to 4 players. Each player would assemble a squad to sortie of Real, Super, Mook robots and up to two Battleships or base pieces. Players would take turns moving and attacking, just like in SRW, and the last team standing is the winner. Pieces, maps, and campaigns would be sold both together with and separately.

Here's the hook, though:

The game would connect to a SRW game for console, wherein one would be able to use the figures to acquire new mecha in the SRW game, a la Skylanders. So you put your figures on the pedastal and they join your team in SRW, but because they also can be used in a game of their own the risk of them going out-dated is reduced, and the player is encouraged to get more and more this way.

What do you think?

Loona

Might be tricky to adjust plots for the videogame version to take into account later figure releases - at least to me half the charm of the series is the way the settings are blended together and the vharacter interactions.

It'd be less of an issue if the game had a competitive conponent to it (which might mean a seitch from turns to real time gameplay), but wouldn't that be the point of the board version?

So how are they going to retcon Shu having new moves that he doesn't have later in the story and then he'll suddenly have in the next game again :|

Also from a story perspective I'm really unhappy with how they're handling the second half of LoE by doing it in this expansion with Shu's team only. Masaki is there with him in LoE and I wanted the OG team to see

That Shu is actually a good guy, instead of questioning his motives and giving him crap the rest of the game

plus the first 17 maps of 2nd ogs foreshadows the 2nd half of LoE and returning to La Gieas, so it's lame that you never do and instead they branched it off like this. Seems like a money grab that hurts 2nd ogs in the process.

I think I've figured out what I don't like about OE coming off of Z2

-The stupid hit to miss ratio. Why do all my mechs have a 30% chance of hitting the enemy mooks who in turn have 80+%?

-Lots of load times.

-Flipping too many menus.

Also the lack of a grid is surprisingly annoying.

Anyway, thinking about starting the alpha games after I finish Z2, but like, isn't most of the series on PS2?

Alpha 1 and Alpha Gaiden are both for the PS1.

Alpha for Dreamcast is an enhanced version of the game with more routes, more story, more ending paths etc. Yet the game is in complete 3D. Obviously as the title of it implies, it's DC only.

Alpha 2 and 3 both end the series on the PS2.

As far as Dark Prison is concerned.. I suspect I'll be biting the bullet on that no matter what. Just cause.. you know, Shuu Route in SRW EX. I wanna see what they do with it.. and if they include the old Neo Granzon code like they did originally for the lulz or not. Plus I have the rest of the Masou Kishin.. so might as well wrap it up. Just hoping it's solid.

Infinite Battle.. you nailed the problem that's been bugging me bout this Devilgunman. The background / the stages look as dull / empty as they could have gone. The UI seems to look better a bit but I can't help but wonder if this is like... maybe due to the fact the game is supposed to be like 3 on 3 potentially and the engine can't handle it.. or there's just so much other stuff like the huge roster they couldn't or.. I dunno.

I still feel so undecided on this one.

It's kind of hard to go to other SRW games after Z2. Game runs so well, and OE was running so slow. Still, I picked up Alpha this weekend so I'll give it a try. Not too hyped to learn that Victory Gundam is in it.

I need to get back to OE just to see what happens with the originals in that and the upgrade for it. I like the original but the game itself is kinda eh.

I haven't watched that PV yet but are you sure Dark Prison covers LoE part 2? My understanding was that it was essentially an expanded version of Shu's route from EX, like the routes for Masaki and Ryune were in OGs 2.

That would kind of mess up the flow of OG games considering they worked in that order for me:
- MK part 1, with the DS/PSP ports changing minor bits to fit in the OG continuity
- Original Generation 1, SRW2 events with Masaki, Shu, Bian and Ryune
- Original Generation 2 covers most of SRW3, with the Inspector war being there.
- Original Generation Gaiden adds some background stuff about Volkrus and covers the Ragnarok epilogue to SRW3.
- Original Generations 2nd covers the EX routes for Masaki and Ryune as well as a variant version of F/F Final.
- Meanwhile, Dark Prison covers Shu's EX route, ie his resurrection as a free man and everything he's been up to during OGs 2nd. It also apparently introduces characters that will be used later in main OG titles.
- MK part 2 and the rest of the MK series continue where OGs 2nd left.

It would be really weird to stop making bits of LoE cannon. I guess they could add some stuff from LoE part 2 from Shu's point of view but that still sounds confusing.
Not that it was simple in the first place lol.

I think you're thinking of LoE2, whereas I'm talking about the 2nd half of LoE after Misaki comes back from the licensed SRW universe and him and takes down the evil cult resurrecting their god Vulkrux and Shu shows up and tricks Vulkrux into thinking Shu is working for him but in actuality Shu is free and he kills Vulkrux and becomes truly free.

Dark Prison I assume refers to Shu being under of Vulkrux's confines. Dark Prison should cover from when Shu is ressurected by Vulkrux to Shu killing Vulkrux and becoming free.

When Shu rejoins in 2nd OGs he says he's killed Vulkrux and is now free and not under Vulkrux's influence and his followers (aka the Dark Prison team) say they were there and witnessed it.

So it seems that's what Dark Prison will cover. The side story of Shu coming back to life, doing some stuff while pretending to be under Vulkrux's influence and then going and destroying the evil god and setting himself free.

I'm just annoyed because I would have liked to see the Steel Dragons OG team help out with that and work together with Shu to accomplish that since in LoE1 Masaki and crew work with Shu to do that in the end.

I'm just annoyed because I would have liked to see the Steel Dragons OG team help out with that and work together with Shu to accomplish that since in LoE1 Masaki and crew work with Shu to do that in the end.
I share your annoyance that this will probably be a standalone storyline with minimal interaction with the rest of the OG2 routes.

I was thinking about EX, I haven't even finished MK2. In EX, as far as I remember it, Shu's route is all about free will. It begins with his resurrection, goes along Ruozol's grand plans for a sacrifice to resurrect Volkrus. Except in the last chapter, Shu reveals he had been playing a long con on Ruozol and sacrifices him instead, just so he can summon Volkrus to kill it. All that is in EX (summarized when LoE part 2 begins) and I was expecting this DLC to cover that story + retcon in some characters from MK2/3 (the second PV showed Gaen).

Then again, it's kind of hard to keep track of the Volkrus resurrections since the bastard is resurrected every other Tuesday in these games.

Yeah, I think we're talking about the same thing. Ex = 2nd half of LoE (LoE's final boss is Volkrus, right? It's been a while since I played LoE1).

I haven't played MK2/3 either. Heard MK2 was kind of bad so not gonna play them for a while until I run out of good SRW games first :p

So been playing a bit and here's what I think:

Super Robot Wars W is a game I continue to be biased toward because it has The Second Raid, but it is still pretty good, and the game feels nice and fast paced, too, which I like. There is no voice acting, though, and after SRWZ2, Z, @, and OE it just feels way too quiet without people shouting.

Super Robot Wars Z2 is hard to argue against. Game looks great, moves fast, and is all around really good.

Super Robot Wars @ . . . is sort of slow. Because you can't skip anything or make dialogue go faster. It isn't bad though, it is just slow. The sprites are pretty hilarious, though. Also I'm glad there are voices.

Super Robot Wars OE has the most frustrating accuracy math going on in any SRPG I've ever played. I miss my attacks way, WAY more often than I hit, and the enemy rarely if ever hits, and on my turn I'm lucky to have 70% accuracy whereas the enemy rarely falls below 80%. Also the load times make it drag on and on. Still would be faster than SRW @ if not for the fact that I have to reset so often because entire turns will go away with me failing to hit anything.

Sooo, just got back into the games. Missed them so so much. About to go ahead and buy 2nd OG. Saw a good price online for a copy.

I just adore the mecha, and the attack animations. Absolutely glorious.

Such beautiful animation.

I love how one of the first comments in the Exbein Ashe video is complaining how XXbein is lamer and it sucks we don't keep Exbein Ashe. Because it's so true. That sprite is ridiculously awesome. Whereas XXbein is dumb football robot >_<
