A few days late...but I'll guess anywhere between 8 and 15.
I don't see them making a "port" of Smash, instead I see them getting all the WiiU content in and just adding onto it with characters, stages, triphies, and likely one new single player mode and I see them calling it Smash 5/the fifth Smash game. So I'm going for a full set of new characters by end of next year.
I want to guess and book mark a list of 12 characters that I think will happen. This is sorta my wishlist, but also taking a look at what was added in Smash 4 these are mostly my genuine guesses.
Shoo ins:
1: Inklings - I mean do I need to say why? lol.
2: Ice Climbers - See 1.
3: Monster Hunter (F/M varients, each with different armors) - MH is now a huge Nintendo partner. So unless the MH team says no like they did with MVC3 I don't see how they don't get in.
4: Atlus Rep - Nintendo's biggest partner without a rep. Yu seems likely since he kinda became Atlus's Mascot, but anyone is likely from P5 Protag to Flynn to Jack Frost. But it remains that Atlus rep seems likely to be added.
5: A New Pokemon Rep - I would love Popmaid but yeah, don't see anyone but Owl3 being it. We shall see, could be anyone really.
Fairly likely:
6: Paper Mario - Huge franchise always treated kinda seperate from Mario most notably in Paper Jam. Huge moveset potential, and despite...the way the series has gone still a memorable series.
7: Indie Rep - Most likely Shovel Knight. To show their love of Indie's, NOA will highly recommend Shovel Knight to get in with a handful of new indie trohies. (At least thats how I imagine the conversation going lol.)
8: Chorus Kids - Was planned for 4. Likely cut for 3DS limits. See no reason to not add but putting them in fairly likely incase they were cut for other reasons.
9: Snake - Despite Konami going insane, they have unusually been supportive of VC and even in the NES mini pack, so Nintendo and Konami must be on good terms so Ithink its fairly likely.
10: Banjo & Kazooie - MS and Nintendo have worked plenty before. If they want him, I don't really MS saying no. The most they'd ask is to throw in a few Halo trophies or something lol.
Far out possabilities but still possible:
11: Minecrafter - Huge with kids, now on WiiU and will most certainly come to Switch probably by end of 2017.
12: Ashley - I don't know but them suddenly having so much merchandise like themes and badges just for this one character keeps throwing me off for some reason...
Let's see how close I get. Now bookmarking and I'll quote this post once its released to see how close I come.
Alot of third parties to first party ratio, but I kinda feel thats the direction they are taking Smash, a celebration of video games themselves. (Especially as they run out've 1st party characters.)

I would be very surprised if Master Cheif get in. He's essentially Mr.Shooter nowadays.
I would be shocked if someone would avatar bet you that Inkling wouldn't be in the game. Inkling is one of those very few characters that would be no brainer to become playable.

I'm not saying zero people would be excited by a Dragon Quest character, but most people outside of Japan would react with "who/what is this?", which isn't exactly the type of response a third-party should warrant. I remember Sakurai describing Final Fantasy as one of the few remaining "globally recognized" series, and I wouldn't put Dragon Quest in that category. DQ has never been big in the West. Speaking as a filthy American, it just doesn't strike me as a big deal in the way that Sonic, Pac-Man, Mega Man, Street Fighter, and Final Fantasy do.

Pretty much this. It's the same reason I can't see peeps like Rayman, Lara Croft, Scorpion, and characters from series like GTA and Elders Scrolls and such joining either. They're famous to us, sure, but they were never big or well known at all in Japan. Snake, Sonic, Mega Man, Pac-Man, Ryu and Cloud on the other hand are famous and well known worldwide.
EDIT: To be fair, some of those other characters have other reasons to rule them out. Sakurai doesn't want realistic fire arms in Smash and I can't imagine Lara/a GTA character without them, and Mortal Kombat is such a overly violent series. Nobody wants to see Scorpion rip Mario's head off...but at the same time no one wants to see Scorpion NOT rip someone's head off, if that makes any sense. It's the same issue Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe had.
Smashboards is just comical. I don't know why I used to frequent that place. As of now, they are currently labeling characters who are overrated (and underrated, of course). Apparently, Elma is one of them.
I've got news for them--outside of that board, she isn't that highly requested.
Edit: On second thought, that's essentially what they're saying. She IS overrated on the boards. But I still can't take them seriously when I take a look at their list of underrated characters. LOL

Elma is certainly way too high. The only reason she placed that high was because she had the benefit of being really popular when the game was relatively new at the time of the polling. But honestly, the ENTIRE list is laughable.

I like how the most requested character is a veteran whom most people dislike for being chaingrabs: the character. I am curious how Ice Climbers would develop in a game where characters are immune to grabs for a full second though.

desyncs still look pretty sick even without handoffs. if i can pretend i'm wobbles while beating up on the training mode AI i'd be plenty satisfied.
if controlled desyncs aren't possible at all i'll be pretty disappointed.

If Splatoon and Mario Kart 8 are getting additional content, then why wouldn't Smash Bros.?
We got 7 additional characters from a tiny DLC team, so I don't see why 8 additional characters strikes you as farfetched for a full-fledged retail title. Smash Bros. is one of Nintendo's flagship IPs.

Personally, my guess is two, although I'm a little uncertain as to who they'd be.
Ice Climbers and that rumored Rhythm Rhythm rep would be great, but I imagine Inkling would be a bigger draw.
What's really funny is how I distinctly recall many hating their return for Brawl, and now you see the exact opposite response for their Smash 4 absence.

I'm just more amused because ice climbers is not a good game, but hey, they were in smash so now everybody knows who they are: they're those two characters that were in smash a couple of times
Also kind of amazed to see Viridi in both the want and expected charts. I'd be pretty happy if she turned up but I figured despite being one of the best KI:U characters she'd be kinda niche.
Anyone thinking waddle dee is more likely than Ashley though... smh.

Wolf didn't exactly get the warmest welcome when he appeared on Brawl at first either. I remember some real salt on several forums when people first unlocked him :3
I'd be super happy to see Inkling though. Way, WAY up there on my 'do want' list.

I was always impressed with how they differentiated Wolf from Fox, so he was my favorite SF character in Brawl. He's not a priority by means, but it'd be cool to see him back one day.
I haven't gotten a chance to play XCX yet either, but like the rest of the game's cast, she looks insanely boring to me. :/

People were disgusted when the last few characters were revealed to be Lucario, ROB, Toon Link and Wolf.
They got over it.
I remember, even back then, being annoyed at people hating on those four, because all of them made total sense. Lucario and ROB were perfect Smash roster additions, Toon Link is just a better designed Young Link and Wolf was requested a lot for Brawl and added another villain to the game.
You see that these days with Dark Pit and Corrin. Seething anger when they were added, and now people don't mind them in the game at all, and most generally enjoy them, I think.
Wouldn't being realistic be looking at the content other games are getting, combined with how much content we know a small team can produce and make an assumption from it?
I don't even get the point of re-releasing Smash 4 without new content.
Nah, you're being pessimistic. The expectation of new characters in a Smash Bros. port is pretty realistic, especially when looking at Splatoon and Mario Kart 8.

My only problem with Dark pit is how little they changed him from Pit. In KI:U he's a fairly distinct character from Pit and even has some stuff pit straight up doesn't (like his flying doesn't seem limited for example) but then his smash incarnation is just pit with really super minor tweaks. Same for Lucina: Glad to see her join but kinda dissapointed she was tweaked marth when they could've given her galeforce and stuff instead
Most people don't seem fussed about Corrin, infact the tournament usage seems pretty high for her (even if the actual results are less than stellar). Just, uh... don't go to gameFAQs anytime soon if you like Corrin because they've got a major hateboner for the character

I wouldn't know for sure since, again, I haven't played it, but none of the cast looks that interesting to me. Elma and Lin in particular look like poorly-designed background characters.

Being realistic means keeping expectations in check, not wilding out and saying that 10+ characters are getting added.
People look too deeply into things all the time. Let them think we're getting 8 more characters or some shit, meanwhile I'll try to resist saying "told you so" when there's much, much less.

If the rumored Smash up-port to Switch is true, there's no way in hell it won't have new content, however small, that's impossible with Masahiro "Let's-Cram-A-Dozen-Games'-Worth-Of-Content-Here" Sakurai at the helm. This is not even counting how important a seller Smash is to Nintendo, to the point where it'd seem Sakurai's got carte blanche to do as he pleases. This is the series that got us a Gamecube controller adapter that to this day will ONLY work with Smash Wii U.
I'm gonna bet on five characters that weren't playable on Sm4sh at least (including veterans that went MIA). They didn't create that ballot for kicks and giggles. Would even bet on it.

I'd agree that 8 is a pretty crazy expectation. The roster is already huge and the paid DLC roster only amounted to 7 characters. So, 8 sounds insane to me. But I also think 0 new characters is incredibly unlikely. If someone demanded a guess from me I'd say no less than 2 new characters and no more than 4. If I had to pick one number I'd lazily split the difference and go with 3.

The thing I'd like to point out is that people really weren't expecting that much out of Smash's DLC period before it really kicked off. I remember most people thought it would only really consist of leftover veterans and maybe 1 or 2 newcomers...but in the end we ended up with seven characters, FOUR of them being fully unique and fleshed out newcomers. I think it's possible Sakurai could surprise us. He's the guy who busts his ass off to add as much content to his games as possible.
However, I think it depends on how much time they have. If Nintendo really wants this out by launch (as stated by Serkan Toto back in January), then I guess it'd probably around 4 or maybe 5 characters. However, if it turns to be a launch window game and comes out later in the year, then I could see them adding a bit more.

I'm betting on it being a Fall/Holiday title. I know there's still a world of information we don't know about the Switch but would Nintendo seriously have Smash scheduled for March and only let the world know 2 months beforehand? They've made a habit out of constant updates over a long period of time for that particular series.

4-6 is my guess, with only a few proper new stages, with most of the "new" stages being 3DS to Wii U ports.

I wonder if they would try to port over all the trophies from the 3DS version.
I know we'd have a lot of low quality and blocky looking models, but I always pretty disappointed that characters like Hades didn't appear anywhere in the Wii U game. Wanted to make funny photos with his trophy in the Photo Studio.
