Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U Thread 5: Yarning for Yoshi

nice job comparing an obvious port of Street Fighter 4 to the 3DS version of Smash that's actually built for it
besides if we compared Super Street Fighter 4+AE sales vs the 3DS version, that's a 2:1 split that:
1) is for a game which suits the audience on PS360 much better
2) is for two consoles that have a combined install base more than 10x larger than the Wii U will ever sell

wrong, Activision isn't trying to push sales for the 360 or PS3 and they do it because the Wii version will obviously sell less

The whole point of marketing is to push for more sales.

Theres a reason most of the media is showing the wiiU version, and to a small extent, why most of the screenshots are usually wiiU from sakurai, aswell as posting 1080p screenshots on facebook. They're putting into the mind of everybody that the wiiU version is the superior version, or atleast the version they want everyone to prioritize over.
Its the same reason activision has not shown the wii version of COD games in most media.

Well the Wii u version is the superior and the main version, and I actually well get both versions, but I will rarely play the 3ds version as it's inferior in every possible way, it's because there's different content in each version otherwise I wouldn't bother, I just think it's stupid to say that's the handheld version will outsell the console version, considering every past Smash games were only on consoles and were popular for the 4 players couch gameplay.

The Lucario thread was seriously eye opening for me. I thought people got over the whole "the took our slots" thing in the 7 or 8 years since Brawl's pre-hype phase only to see the weirdest logic everywhere in that moment.

I plan to get both versions to make smash a part of my life everywhere I go

I'm with this guy.

What other fighting game has passed the 1 million mark on the 3ds?

It was a launch title, 3ds didn't have many games to buy at that time, people wanted to try this 3d gimmick and they picked the game that fit them for this new system they bought, no other fighting game had passed the 500k mark expect maybe DoA and that was also a launch title.

The 3DS vs Wii U topics are the worst part of Smash Bros 4 discussion. Easily.

The reason is that it is the more marketable version. You have bigger screenshots and videos. It is easier to see things. Sakurai and Nintendo won't do it to make one version look superior over another.

Same reason they don't show the Wii version of COD games. It looks like crap and people would see that and possibly think that the PS360 version would look like that since the PS360 versions look similar.

OK there buddy.
I would love to see Tyrantrum getting it's chance to be one of pokeball pokemon.
While I think Tyrantrum is cool, it really isn't special. They're better off having a Fossil Fighter dino being an assist trophy.

That Dedenne is clearly hacked. It usually gets killed before it can even move.

Samurai dicing up the canon as usual.

Some of yall are silly...

This is the FIRST time Smash will be playable on a handheld....

That fact ALONE will sell on novelty........

I mean damn, people were trying to hack roms and make homebrew for this for how long???.... Its finally a real full blown game in the pipeworks.. and people think its not gonna sell?

Lol.

OUt of curiosity, has Tekken sold 1million on Wii U? Because if it hasn't then logically we can only conclude the Wii U isn't a suitable console for fighters.

Do anyone think we will get amazing introduction video for Smash 4 that would be very similar to Melee's rather than cut and pasted introduction in Brawl?

Nah, it could leak onto the internet early and be spoiled. Better not to make one at all.

As for the 3DS/Wii U thing; it's just good specifically for me to get the 3DS versions. I have three younger brothers, all with 3DSs, and presumably Nintendo will include some sort of Download Play feature.

I want to believe that the initial parts of the E3 trailer point in a direction like this. Seriously, the CG with the different franchises matching up to the drums was sogood.gif.

This. Seriously. That beginning part was so good and matched the music so well.

And the franchise intro thing was brilliant.
Do we know what the framerate is going to be on smash 3DS?
Less than 60fps is very unlikely.

Well, there's no story mode with CG cutscenes this time, so they better at least make an intro video that isn't just reusing material from these character promos.

Yeah, I really like the franchises aspect in the trailer but I'm hoping for more franchises to pop up as well. It would be amazing if we are getting shorter version of Smash 4 introduction at Smash 4 until we unlocked everything in the game. They would reward you the longer version with all characters (including unlockable characters)

I would love to see all characters in action in CGI because I know that it would be so glorious.

That's true.

I love the idea of individual fighters getting invited.

Waluigi: "Maybe it got lost in the mail..."

I've had an idea for a fan animation for the series forever and seeing the "Villager checks the mail" sequence just made me :'D given that my idea started in a similar way. Smash is always better when it's about silly things leading to the group event of the forever versus having a real plot.

I'm surprised some people want the 3DS version canned. I plan on getting both versions myself. Portable Smash is something I always wanted. It'll keep me busy when going to visit the wife's family at the holidays lol. Can't talk right now, gotta beat Master Hand on Hard!

Some people often talk about Paper Mario himself though.

Who also is the star of a critically acclaimed game series named after him.

Also, unlike the Koopa Kids, Waluigi was brought back after the developers attempted to eliminate him.

Can you give me some proof that the developers attempted to eliminate Waluigi? Perhaps and interview or something. The only thing I remember is Waluigi's exclusion in MK7, where I think the producer didn't think Waluigi's design fit that game in particular, which I definitely would not consider an "attempt to eliminate him". Mind shedding some light on this?

Also, the Koopa Kids were last seen in Mario Party 7, so I dunno what you're talking about.

Aside from Mario RPG and Paper Mario, there's also Mario & Luigi.

And... what does that have to do with my statements? Also, why do you feel you need to bring this up to me? I know that there's other RPG series. Are you trying to be clever?

Her design was used as a generic female Toad in that one Galaxy art because Toad is just used a generic design in the main games...

What does that have to do with my statement, either? We're talking about Waluigi's inclusion in Smash and main Mario games. You brought up the argument that there's no characters that originated in the spin-offs that made it into the main games, which is false, because Toadette (and it's exactly the same Toadette design/color scheme) was in Mario Galaxy. Whether she was supposed to be the actual character Toadette or just a generic female Toad, we don't know, and it doesn't even matter.

Waluigi's importance to the Mario series is absolutely negligible. Waluigi should not be in Smash 4. There's plenty of Mario characters that should be considered before Waluigi, including Toad.

However, it seems to me that you're just arguing for the sake of arguing, and disagreeing with everything I say for the sake of disagreeing. I don't see any validity in continuing this discussion.

So March is around the corner, what do you think we will have in this new month?
2 veterans? 1 newcomer and another Vetaran?
Ridl---- nevermind that part....

I wish that instead of pics Sakurai would post some of the new tracks like he did in Brawl, since some of the remixes are amazing.

yes, tekken a series that hasn't ever been on a nintendo console is expected to sell 1milion units. Not to mention Tekken Tag team tournament 2 is AWFUL for new comers, with that awful tutorial in the beginning. I would rather had soul calibur V namco fucking damn it.

also waluigi is irrelevant, no one cares about him, etc
3DS version inferior, etc
fuck Tekken etc
Fuck lucario etc
and for a second i thought that was a raichu =/

Newcomers are direct-only and considering directs are bimonthly ... yeah.

The big question is 1 or 2 veterans.

My short back and forth with R0ckman yesterday made me try to put together my personal "above and beyond the call" roster.

ibtT4CoOu1frQH.png

Legend: Reds are confirmed veterans. Blues are unconfirmed veterans. Greens are confirmed newcomers. Yellows are unconfirmed newcomers and my personal picks. I also tried doing something fun with the layout. Each row of characters goes from oldest franchise - newer - oldest to give it all some consistency. Of course, it didn't work out perfectly in places.

Things that have changed since last time:

- I fell back in love with the idea of a character that drops/summons/constructs various blocks from the Nintendo Puzzle League games (Panel De Pon, Dr. Mario, Tetris, Yoshi's Cookie) and uses puzzle game mechanics to fight and as such, Lip is on this new roster running on unleaded hopium.

- Saki's on because something about the Little Mac reveal makes me optimistic in even the longest of shots from franchises unrepresented but talked about enough making a jump into the fray. Issac is here for similar reasons.

Also, if this thread starts talking about music I'm going to have to bail out lest I spend stupid amounts of time tracking down song names.

That DK song is ridiculously good btw.

Veterans bet!

I don't know... Ness and.. Ike? someone really old from the smash series and the other kind of new?

I was not aware directs were bimonthly... I thought they were a little unpredictable.

Just saw today's picture. So far we have Palkia, Xerneas and Dedenne as Pokéballs right?

I think so... but I know there is someone with a list who can answer this in more detail.

I wonder did any Pokemon got cut from Melee to Brawl? Or have they all been re-appearing in all games so far?

iirc only Snorlax, Goldeen and Electrode have appeared in every Smash Bros (except Charizard, but he doesn't count). 64->Melee had a number of cuts and Melee->Brawl had a huge amount of cuts.

The Pokemon lineups are almost completely different in every game. Electrode wasn't even in Pokeballs in the first one, but it showed up in Saffron City.

The only ones that are in all three games are:
Goldeen
Mew
Snorlax
Starmie in 64 is more or less the same as Staryu in Melee and Brawl, so it sort of counts.

Doesn't it strike anyone as ironic that the man who more or less "officially" spoiled his game in vivid detail prior to its launch (minus a few characters) has refused to add cutscenes in a story mode because they might be spoiled on the internet?

I loved the Dojo, btw. Just saying that it's weird he'd be so willy nilly about sharing info there but gives such a weird reason for the single player not having cutscenes.

Azue's and Masterballs' rosters are both acceptable.

It's a pity that they will no Smash 4 roster will feature da man ever again.

The short answer to this is Publicity>Consistency as far as business goes.

The whole reasoning was silly - because people who hadn't bought the game enjoyed the cutscenes, now no one gets to enjoy the cut scenes.

But maybe it's all been a huge feint, and really Nintendo has outsourced Blur Studios to make a feature length Smash movie, unlockable through story mode.

Hey, speaking of things that won't happen, does anyone think that Nintendo will use this Smash engine they are building for any other products this gen? Like, put to the side Wii U and 3DS sales. Usually, there is only one Smash per generation, and it's the only game of its genre Nintendo releases per generation. Could this change, and we could get a Nintendo vs. Bandai Namco? Nintendo vs. Sega?

He only "spoiled" the starting content of the game and 3rd party characters. Nothing that was unlockable (not only characters, but also stages, modes and even some items) was spoiled.

Who also is the star of a critically acclaimed game series named after him.

And yet it's still a spin off title that has never added anything to the main series, which according to you would make it irrelevant.

The only thing I remember is Waluigi's exclusion in MK7, where I think the producer didn't think Waluigi's design fit that game in particular, which I definitely would not consider an "attempt to eliminate him". Mind shedding some light on this?
That's what I was thinking about. There was nothing about Mario Kart 7 that made its image different from previous ones, so saying that Waluigi's design didn't fit there seemed to be basically saying that he didn't fit the series.

And... what does that have to do with my statements? Also, why do you feel you need to bring this up to me? I know that there's other RPG series. Are you trying to be clever?

I misunderstood your reference to Mario RPG and thought you assumed that it was the only other RPG spin off. You make it sound like my reference to Mario & Luigi was out of nowhere, but now I really don't get the point of your specific reference to Mario RPG's characters. If they're all irrelevant, why does being third party matters?

You brought up the argument that there's no characters that originated in the spin-offs that made it into the main games, which is false, because Toadette (and it's exactly the same Toadette design/color scheme) was in Mario Galaxy. Whether she was supposed to be the actual character Toadette or just a generic female Toad, we don't know, and it doesn't even matter.

The design wasn't completely identical though. They're using her colors and obviously had knowledge of her, but note that she only seemed to be wearing a single one piece pink dress or only a big vest like the male Toads- either way, she can only be seen from the back and her cloths seem identical to Toad's,colors aside. Meanwhile, her actual design has a small jacket over the dress, each one colored differently. Her twintails also was drawn differently (Toadette has two solid pink "balls" tying the head mushroom to the last part with the same pattern as her head. The galaxy design only seems to have the last part). There have been some variations of Toadette's design (one with longer dress, and initially it was orange), but none match the one in Galaxy completely, and some characteristics (like vest+dress and the twintails) have remained constant and are missing from the Galaxy cameo. Her appearances in post-Galaxy games haven't acknowledged that design either.

And we also do know that she's supposed to be a generic female Toad, because two "Toadettes" appear at once in one of the storybook shots from Galaxy's intro.

I could see Mallo as an Assist Trophy, but not as a playable character. Pushing platforms away and disappear or something.

This. But replace him with Kumatora (ha) and add Krystal in the bottom left corner there and I'm super satisfied with this roster.

Sorry if annoyed anyone about 3DS vs. Wii U but I want to add one last thing.

I know it's stupid to bring Wii and DS sales but didn't Mario Kart DS sold like 22 million and NSMB.DS sold 30 million on 150 million install base? What this have to do with anything you say? Well the Wii versions that both came out 3 years later and on a lower install base by 50 million, still managed to outsell their handheld counterpart it's 35 million for MKWii and 29 million for NSMBW.

You can say that it's a new mainline game rather than a port, but the fact that MKWii outsold the DS version by 13 million while also being on lower install base is amazing.
NSMBW didn't outsell the ds version but it was very close doing so.These games and especially MK are enjoyed best on a big tv that's how they managed to outsell the handhelds versions, even though MKDS was a better game (Imo).

The 3ds have higher install base but that doesn't translate to higher sales. I'm 100% sure if both 3ds and Wii u version came out at the same time Nintendo will mostly advertise the Wii u version just like every newcomer trailer only show the Wii u version and like 80% of pictures on both the website and Miiverse are Wii u version.

Let's say only 50 percent of the people who bought brawl are interested in Smash 4, of those fifty 30% want an HD Smash and are not interested in downgrading to a handheld version with worse picture quality and way worse way to play, the other 20 don't care and will either buy the 3ds version because budget problems or won't get the game.
