So why play with the outlines off, really? It looks like Link might be too hard to see if he was infront of that tree next to him.

He won't stand there forever tho. He might be better to make out in movement.

Also, I survived 4 player FFA matches on Hyrule Temple with a viewing distance of 2+ meters on a 15" TV (I think at one point we all did). Compared to that it'll be ridiculously easy to see your character, outlines or not

Giving people choice is better than anything.
Plus, it's ore than On/Off, so each one will have what he wants.

I'm also wondering if the game could be smoother without outlines...

This mario is way too tiny to make out the necessary details to compare.

This is what Kirby looks like, it's 60FPS in 2D and 3D.

I think Smash looks too much better to realistically pull off 4 characters at 60FPS with 3D on.

What? Kirby is traditionally simplistic in its graphical style!

Sheik was always a tournament choice. Especially in the PAL version of Melee where all of Sheik's aerial attacks auto L-cancelled. Not in Brawl though. Little to no killing power doomed her to mediocrity.

PAL player here and I'm pretty sure that sheiks aerials don't autocancel in melee. Also ntsc sheik is much better because that ridiculous chaingrab and much more powerful uair.

If the 3DS didn't have such a crappy screen outlines wouldn't even been needed.

They look great without outlines, looks real smooth. I'll be sure to keep them on.

I suspect it'll be the case that it'll look better with outlines in 2D and a matter of preference in 3D - since you'll have depth perception, you won't need the outline to assist you in distinguishing between the character and the background when things get busy.

I'm pretty good at stereoviewing, and I see absolutely no indication of any 3D. The only bit that looks unusual are the outlines, and that's because they only appear in one image.

Can't believe march is almost over with absolutely no character reveals. E3 is too far away for a mega blowout of character reveals, so he has to do something . At least give me ice climbers or something. Throw me a bone here sakurai.

There has also been a nintendo direct every single month since may of 2012 EXCEPT for this last january. I hope that we get some chotto direct this month or something :/

I think it's probable. As said, Brawl was playable at E for All. If they already felt comfortable having Sakurai and (Nate? Bill?) play live on stage last year (though that could have easily been faked, idk) then I'd expect a press playable build this year.

I don't think there will be more than one more direct before E3 though (so... probably April)

Jigglypuff is just the least hype-worthy character who is still within reason. I'd be disappointed if Jigglypuff didn't make it, but I don't imagine many people will be excited by its reveal.
