Super Smash Wii U - Final Thoughts
I really like Smash Bros Wii U. Even though what I tried was just a demo, I really enjoyed it and I just cannot wait to play it more! ZeRo Suit Samus is so much fun, as well. If you get the chance to play the demo, definitely try her out!

I just realized in Pac-Man's reveal trailer at the end they showed Pac-Man and Mr. Game and Watch together because they both debuted in 1980, and then the showed Mario and Donkey Kong together because they both debuted in 1981, but

The Donkey Kong that debuted in 1981 isn't the Donkey Kong that is in Smash. They Donkey Kong that is in Smash is the DKC Donkey Kong which debuted in 1994. The Donkey Kong that debuted in 1981 (the original Donkey Kong) is actually Cranky Kong today.

Cranky Kong Confirmed

I hate how Lucas is at risk of being cut. He's one of the best clone characters. Much more interesting than Wolf IMO, and I prefer his fighting style to Ness's.

Skull Hydra and Batty,

E3 is officially over, so I won with two bets. I'm going to get an avatar ready for Batty, but Skull Hydra. Please let me know when you are ready for one in two weeks. :)

I don't understand the idea that Lucas is getting cut.

He's pretty unique and not in an overrepresented series.

Some characters have to get cut lest the roster get bloated, and Lucas' specials were close enough to Ness's that custom moves can compensate. If Lucas is cut, I wouldn't be surprised to see PK Freeze as a custom move.

I agree with you about series representation, though. It would be a shame to see Earthbound drop to just one rep.

To me, Donkey Kong is Donkey Kong, the same way that Link is Link. The Smash Bros. version of Link is the Twilight Princess incarnation from 2006, but I'd still place him alongside Samus and Pit as having debuted on the NES. Nintendo doesn't seem to like acknowledging the Donkey/Cranky situation, and even the DK design from the arcade-inspired Mario vs. Donkey Kong series is taken from DKC.

Deepest lore.

They acknowledged it in smash bros and in the DK games and they acknowledged it on twitter. Nintendo acknowledges it PLENTY.

The DK in smash is DK the 3rd and cranky is cranky. Because smash came out when that dk the 3rd was around.

I realize that Lucas being cut is the most likely thing, but man it would just be a dream for me if they added more characters from Earthbound. I'd like to see them add Paula and give her PK Fire, Thunder, and Magnet, and then completely overhaul Ness with moves he actually used in that game.

Hell, even Jeff would make an awesome addition with all the gadgets he used. Probably still just an assist trophy though.

So how about ranking the newcomers with the new ones?

Villager
Pac-Man
Mega Man
Mii Gunner
Wii Fit Trainer
Palutena
Mii Brawler
Greninja
Little Mac
Rosalina
Mii Swordfighter

I'm a lot more interested in Pac-Man and Miis than I thought I'd be.

You have inside info...Spill it! /s

Alright, you twisted my arm. I'm going to spill something.

Batty, Here's your new avatar for next two weeks :)

SSB64 description:
Donkey Kong and Mario started out as arch-rivals, but they've patched things up in recent years. These days DK spends his time searching the jungle for bananas instead of kidnapping beautiful maidens. In the past few years, other members of the Kong family have cashed in on DK's fame as well, including his favorite nephew, Diddy.

Works:
Donkey Kong (Arcade),
Donkey Kong Country (SNES),
Mario Kart 64 (N64)
Melee trophy:
While he now prefers the laid-back jungle lifestyle to construction site mischief, DK is often forced back into action by the Kremling Krew. The great ape is quite fast despite his burly physique, and he keeps his strength up with a steady diet of his favorite food: bananas. His one extravagance (and only piece of clothing) is a monogrammed necktie.

Donkey Kong, Arcade 1981
For the record, I know that Rare considered Cranky the original DK, but I'm specifically talking about Smash Bros. here.

Forgive me Wii U Pro Controller, I just ordered an official Gamecube controller and MayFlassh adapter for my Wii U. Am I a bad person?

Why not wait for the official Smash ones?

I was thinking about that, and I believe it's mainly a matter of the visual similarity he has with Ness. Their only big difference is their hair/hat. The clothes (excluding Ness's backpack), their height and their body are pretty much the same!

It doesn't help that both of them share B moves. Also, as sad as it is, Mother is a minor franchise at this point, so I think Sakurai prefers to focus his work on adding characters from other series, who are more visually distinctive than other included characters.

He was pretty much a Ness reskin with different (special) attacks. Those different special attacks will now become Ness' optional special attacks.
A Ness reskin with different special attacks? I'm sorry, but did you even play Brawl? Am I the joker here for feeding the troll?

In terms of adapting characters and their style from games, Ness/Lucas have some of the worst movesets. They don't even use those PKs for the most part.

So how about ranking the newcomers with the new ones?

I tried to rank them and my brain exploded. They all look so good. I could only muster up a top 3:

1. Wii Fit Trainer
2. Palutena
3. Pac-Man

I absolutely love the way Sakurai decided to design Pac-Man. It couldn't have been more unique and interesting. And Palutena is awesome with all her moves inspired by Uprising's multi-player.
