Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread XV: Kübler-Ross Edition

I mean, it's a stretch but he's right.

If Microsoft allowed that to happen, I would go out and buy a Kinect and all of their Rare games.

Pic of the day. In Classic mode, a roller spins before every stage to determine your reward. Rewards in red are for customization, green ones are trophies, and yellow means precious gold. Of course, if you raise the intensity, the abundance of these rewards will increase quite a bit, too. You can be rewarded in every stage, so in that way this mode might be a little more generous compared to previous games in the series.

And here's the results screen. It shows what you gained in each stage, but you won't be rewarded until you clear it all. If you mess up in the middle, you can lose some of them too. The fighter icons are special attacks, and icons like the shield are equipment. The icons that say Mii on them are hats and clothes for Mii characters. Icons that show characters on a stand are trophies, of course, and the coins are gold you earned.

It seems like Sakurai is intending the 3DS game to be a quick pick up and play in burst sort of game. The lack of any event matches and adventure mode is starting to worry me.

Mii Fighters in Stage 5!? Just in Stage 5!? Megaton! :p

Looks interesting. Maybe it's a before and after fight screens.

There's only 6 levels in Classic now.

Probably to make it more manageable to beat it with everyone. But you got different paths, so it's nice.

But one has the adoration and love of me and many other fans, while the other has pissed off so many people that we've all tried shooting him

Yeah, I always played as Grunty during the multiplayer shooter parts of Tooie, too. The Banjo players were just too good.

Interesting. Even though I've never spent much time in single player modes before, I like how much depth the 3DS single player seems to have. I'm thinking I'll be playing Classic mode a lot more than I ever have before.

Loving all the unlockables. It seems like they're trying to make them more accessible. Hopefully nothing close to the difficulty in trying to get trophies of bosses in Subspace in Brawl.

It's happening far too often with portable installments of primarily console series. See Paper Mario: Sticker Star and it's needless overworld here.

There will be music tonight, but not just any music, music we've all been waiting for, music that's particularly rhythmic, a heavenly tune that will confirm for us, once and for all, that

The Ridley Men join the Battle!

Classic mode's revamped is one of the few things I wanted so I'm glad changes were made to it. The fact that it gives you rewards so there is actual motivation to keep playing it is great too.

Aren't there more if you play on higher intensities?

To those who are sick of menu pics: the game is releasing in less than a week. You'll know everything that could possibly be considered a megaton within the next seven days. What does it matter that the PotD isn't doing huge reveals?

Hey, odd question. Would you guys be opposed to getting all the Veteran Poll results tonight in an onslaught of reveals? It's fine if we want to keep it to one a day, but I have a couple of crazy days ahead of me work wise, which will make the posting times awkward. Let me know and I'll make a decision based on you guys' reaction! And, for real, I can make it work if we should just do one a day.

I'd be perfectly fine with that, but I'll admit that we're so close to the end now that it'd be nice to keep getting the rest at one a day to go with all the other hype happening this week! It just feels like it should all culminate together, you know? Like one massive money shot.

Sorry. :P

Let's look at all the newcomers [so far dammit]. Would you have guessed them pre-E3 2013? Be honest. Don't let hindsight affect your initial guesses.

Saw them coming:
Little Mac - Always seemed like a popular choice, and having him playable just felt natural.
Mii Fighters - The Miis practically ARE Nintnedo now. Of course it was gonna happen!
Pac-Man - I knew he was in the moment Bandai Namco was announced as Smash's co-developer.

Optimistic about chances:
Dark Pit (IF IN) - As I played through Kid Icarus: Uprising, I knew immediately that Dark Pit would make for a perfectly appropriate and likely clone character for Pit.
Palutena - Kid Icarus: Uprising was very well-received and Palutena easily felt like the most suitable newcomer from the series after Pit.
Rosalina & Luma - She's become one of the Mario series' most important characters in recent years, so this was pretty much a no-brainer.
Villager - I don't really know why I expected him/her, but I did. Animal Crossing has long felt like a major hole in terms of playable Smash reps.

Didn't expect:
Bowser Jr. (IF IN) - There are already so many Mario reps that I didn't really ever expect to see Bowser Jr. as anything more than an Assist Trophy - especially considering how relatively unpopular/ignored Bowser Jr. seems to be. I'm not even a real fan of the character myself, but after seeing the leak video, I can't wait to try him out! Having him fight from within the Clown Car is a genius idea and perfect for Smash.
Duck Hunt Dog (IF IN) - The only reason he's not in the "Blindsided" category for me is because he's been a somewhat requested character by fans for a little while now. I didn't ever think it'd actually happen, but it's not completely without precedence!
Mega Man - Yeah, I know he's been the most-requested character by fans after Sonic, but you have to remember, Smash 4's reveal and Mega Man's announcement came at a time when Capcom had all but murdered the franchise and character. Despite how badly fans wanted him in and how perfect a fit he's been for Smash since Sonic was added, I just didn't think Capcom would give a fuck and ever let it happen. (Hell, they left Mega Man out of MvC 3 *and* UMvC 3, and they utterly ignored the fact that X was the most-requested character by far.) I've never been so happy to be wrong!
Robin - I'm not a Fire Emblem fan, but even I thought Chrom and another non-avatar character would be the next playable FE characters way, way before Robin.

Blindsided:
Chorus Kids (IF IN) - I love the Rhythm Heaven series to death, but I never even imagined it might get a playable character in Smash and I didn't even know I wanted one as badly as I did until Gematsu claimed that the Chorus Kids were being added. Even now, I dearly want them to be in over any other possible newcomer at this point! Gematsu's gotten so much else right that Smash 4's roster will feel a little incomplete to me without the Chorus Kids. :(
Greninja - Everything about Greninja's reveal blindsided and shocked the hell out of me. Looking back, I guess I should have expected a gen 6 Pokémon, but I didn't... and Greninja is a really cool and natural choice, but even now it still feels completely random for some reason.
Shulk - The main character of a JRPG that didn't exactly light the sales charts on fire in Japan or Europe and, for quite awhile, was never even going to be released in the US at all? Yeah, Shulk being playable (let alone Xenoblade even being referenced) in Smash 4 seemed like just about the unlikeliest thing ever.
Wii Fit Trainer - Yeah, no. What? Turned out to be really hilarious and well done, but no way I ever saw this coming.

Only four more PotDs left...

I'm gonna miss this guys :(

Don't worry - I'm sure there'll still be plenty of PotDs beyond this week, probably focusing on unlockable characters and stages before moving over to the Wii U version entirely!

EMERGENCY STAY ON TOPIC AND DON'T GET THE THREAD LOCKED TOPIC!

Of characters not revealed in the demo, are there any Olimar/Alph style alts you'd like to see happen? Are you upset this may mean Bowser Jr. isn't getting any alt colors?

Whoa, what did I miss? I didn't know the thread almost got locked. Geez.

Anyway, yes: a Proto Man alt for Mega Man. The only one that absolutely needs to and should happen IMO. <3

Yeah, same here. I'm actually looking forward to playing classic mode; having path choices makes it much more varied.

I don't think it is. It looks like some ghosts from Luigi's Mansion to me.
Really? Something to check when the game comes out!

I wouldn't say it almost got locked, but it was heading in that direction. And a bunch of posts of a gross insect that kept getting quoted had to be removed.
