Super Smash Bros for Wii U/3DS Developer Roundtable [over]

Neal Ronaghan: Sakurai says it is hard to balance the game. Discussing the process of balancing. he basically did it all by himself in Melee.

wow

Nintendo - "To give us the chance to move the game into next year of cou....I mean, to give the 3DS version room to shine!"

....Lets all face it, the Wii U version is coming either next Feburary or March (like how Brawl did); extra time to polish the game up and to give the Wii U more games for next year....

Except this time there is no other big internal Nintendo game coming out this holiday. Also I'm sure Nintendo wants those figures out for Christmas and Smash is the premier game for them. They will force it out in December.

lol. Yet being the key word. This holiday/Winter we see a shit storm of big games coming to both systems. Without smash I still can't fathom how I can even try to play all the games I want too.

I still don't see them leaving a potential system seller for Q1, especially one they're pushing as hard as they are.

They absolutely need the game for Holiday. PS4/XBO don't have software momentum yet, so this is going to be their last big chance to actually move more units and regain some ground.

Then why isn't there a concrete date for the Wii U version like the 3DS version then? Nintendo KNOWS they need the game for this fall, but the big question is that if the game is ready for this holiday :l. Everything points to yes (and the fact NFC figures are being made for Smash to compete with Disney Infinity 2.0 and Skylanders Trap Team this holiday), but I have this nagging feeling that the game isn't coming this year :(.

Neal Ronaghan: Brawl had a 4 person team give grades to the power of characters. New one has 12 person team.

I'm a bit surprised they're releasing the 3DS version earlier, but I absolutely believe they aren't willing to push the Wii U version past the holidays, because the NFC / Amiibo figures seem to be part of their general strategy to exploit their IPs more and make more revenue off accessories and "toy" lines, since their hardware is floundering.

They want kids this Christmas to clamor not only Smash Bros. Wii U, but also a Mario and Link "toy" that they've seen on TV commercials. That strategy won't work if it gets pushed to next year.

And by four player team, they mean four Metaknight mains.

They should ask about "advanced techniques" in the new Smash.

Michael "TYP" Cole: Q: Concern over balance after brawl's problems. A: it gets very technical. Sakurai was responsible for the changes from N64 to Melee. He had to use a broader grading system with help from staff when working on Brawl. The process became tricky due to biases in the graders' playing style. For the new games they have 12 graders, but there could still be balance anomolies.

Neal Ronaghan: It isn't enough just to make a game and satisfy the fan base. Need to make it for everyone

"When creating a game, we cannot just appeal to traditional fanbases. We need to reach out to new gamers, and cater to many target users."

We did this by making a character ridiculously overpowered.

No kidding, Smash is a huge game with an infinite more moving and contingent parts than any Namco fighter. That means the QA process has to be extensive and thorough.

Oh, gee, right, how could I have forgotten that Nintendo is doing an infinite job. Oh, my bad, TWO TIMES infinity! Clearly they are being totally serious about why the two versions are coming out apart, and there are not other possible reasons why the Wii U version has a holiday release date while the 3DS version is coming in October. Because infinity.

It doesn't sound like Sakurai has a very sophisticated system for balancing. I guess 12 testers is enough for the amount they care about balance though.

Sakurai points out some chars are better suited for 2 vs 4 player and with or without items. Sakurai considers smash a party game.
