Super Smash Bros for Wii U/3DS Developer Roundtable [over]

I'd like to know, it's interesting insight.

It's not like he's going to say "online is laggy as fuck, don't touch it." Or "there's exactly 49 characters and you've heard them all from the internet already."

Of all the things to ask, though...

Even on the subject of Greninja, what made them choose Greninja of the three final starter evolutions? Hey Samurai, give us some details on the design choices behind Greninja -- his signature move isn't his Final Smash, for example.

But just... when they decided to include him? Snore

Pretty tactless to ask Sakurai in that manner and in this context, but the question and offer itself are fine. Competitive game designers frequently monitor and use the assistance of high level players of their games to tune the games themselves. All the game developing talent in the world won't help you balance a game if you aren't as good as the players who will develop the meta and push it to its limits.

You don't approach someone who has been working on a project for years and years at what is supposed to be a "professional" Q&A and say "Hey, I played your old games a bunch. Hire me and I'll help make it better."

It's insulting. The subtext is clearly "I can make it better than you could alone." Tactless.

Does anyone a have a good estimation on how long it took Nintendo to update the Smash Bros site with the Mii Fighters and Palutena after the reveal trailer earlier today? Really hope we get to see a Pac-Man trailer after the roundtable, would be an awesome way for Nintendo to send me off to bed after a long day of awesome announcements.

They could wait until the daily Miiverse update so around 3 EST.

All of the characters to consider were on our internal roster from the beginning of development. We had a slot for a new Pokemon reserved, but did not way for X and Y. We decided to use Greninja well before X/Y came out, based on early reference drawings.

I think that may explain why the Greninja leak was worded the way it was.

Japan was updated pretty shortly after the direct, EN-UK was a just a bit after. Took a couple hours for the NA site, for some reason.

Yep. You don't need to be the lord of games to be good at making them. Sakurai has nothing to prove.

On the flip side, being a good developer doesn't mean you're going to get the balance right. Players WILL be better than you and WILL break things where you didn't.

But Sakurai is focusing on it as a party game first, so I don't expect him to integrate pro players into the balancing process like a Blizzard, a Valve, a Wizards of the Coast, etc.

You don't approach someone who has been working on a project for years and years at what is supposed to be a "professional" Q&A and say "Hey, I played your old games a bunch. Hire me and I'll help make it better."

Which is precisely the very first thing I say in the quoted post.

Good golly, these questions are awful. Someone needed to ask about incentives like eShop discounts/credit for purchasing both versions (they obviously won't have an answer yet, but it's a matter worth raising), the possibility of balance patches after release, the disparities between local/online multiplayer on the 3DS version (I am still unclear on this, especially with respect to Smash Run), the competitive scene's request for Battlefield rather than Final Destination as the For Glory stage... anything but this fluff.

Not great questions. Wish I had another one-on-one w/ Sakurai.

Sneak it. Its apart of your job! Press Sneak......then

Smash guy might have phrased and asked the question wrong but it would be good for Nintendo to get some competitive players to test balance issues for them.

But I doubt it will ever happen considering how the series is ultimately viewed by Sakurai.
