Weird dichotomy at Nintendo - Sakurai keeps pushing the "party game" mantra, while Nintendo is pushing Smash as a competitive game by hosting a formal tournament, releasing dedicated GC controller adapters for the "hardcore" players, etc.

If you don't think Sakurai had any input in any of these decisions, then I'm not sure what to tell you.

I love Greninja and everything, but... I don't give a fuck when it was decided it would be in.

I'd like to know, it's interesting insight.

It's not like he's going to say "online is laggy as fuck, don't touch it." Or "there's exactly 49 characters and you've heard them all from the internet already."

Melee was competitive AND and party game. Why does competitive automatically mean not a party game?

And why does party game automatically mean not competitive?

Compared to, say, Marvel vs Capcom, Super Smash Bros has always been more of a party game. He might have meant to say it in the light that Smash Bros is meant to be more "fun for the whole family" than "super competitive galore".

I kind of think the "for fun" and "for glory" differentiation within the game itself is an acknowledgement that some people consider it competitive. But on the whole, the bulk of the game and its content which goes far beyond 1vs1 Final Destination isn't/doesn't have to be competitive. Most of it is fun or party content.

Though on the subject of patches Nintendo has proven to not be shy about patching Wii U games. And 3DS games starting with Pokemon. If there's a serious problem like Meta Knight this time, my money is it will be patched.

Pretty tactless to ask Sakurai in that manner and in this context, but the question and offer itself are fine. Competitive game designers frequently monitor and use the assistance of high level players of their games to tune the games themselves. All the game developing talent in the world won't help you balance a game if you aren't as good as the players who will develop the meta and push it to its limits.

"We decided to use Greninja well before X/Y came out, based on early reference drawings."

So talking to Game Freak about which Pokémon were popular and a good idea, that was lies?

Or was he talking about Pokéball Pokémon?

"A competitive Smash player is trying to challenge Sakurai to see if he can win and help balance the game. Sakurai asked "have you ever made a game?""

There should be photos of the guy's face after hearing the answer.

Must've been awkward as FUCK.

SLOTS CONFIRMMMMMMMMMMED

Michael "TYP" Cole: A: All of the characters to consider were on our internal roster from the beginning of development. We had a slot for a new Pokemon reserved, but did not way for X and Y. We decided to use Greninja well before X/Y came out, based on early reference drawings.

The Smash player could have maybe posed his question better, but Sakurai could really benefit from listening to the competitive community. Either take the advice, or don't, but it'll still help you make better, informed decisions.

To be fair, we don't know what the competitive player said or asked that warranted such a response from Sakurai.

Also, technically some Smash players have made a game... >_>

Does anyone a have a good estimation on how long it took Nintendo to update the Smash Bros site with the Mii Fighters and Palutena after the reveal trailer earlier today? Really hope we get to see a Pac-Man trailer after the roundtable, would be an awesome way for Nintendo to send me off to bed after a long day of awesome announcements.

A+ on considering it a party game. Thank you.

Because that is what it is.

Pretty much, every Smash is a party game.

Melee was a party game that had INCREDIBLE depth and a lot of neat things that made playing it at a high level beautiful and hype.

We all know how Sakurai views the series, it's unfortunate that we won't get the depth of Melee again. I don't agree with him for removing some of that stuff, but people should stop acting like Smash was never meant to be a party game, it's fucking childish.

Did he? I honestly don't know.

I've read comments from Sakurai in the past that detail his aversion to transforming Smash into something "competitive".
