Superman Returns gets standing ovation at Comic Con 2005

This morning at Comic Con Bryan Singer brought a reel with about five minutes of completed Superman Returns footage cut into something of a preview trailer, since they have barely begun post production there were only one or two finished effects shots but the final one was stunning.

The footage was so fucking amazing it got a standing ovation. From what I know, only two other things at the Con got that: the Ray Bradbury/Ray Harryhausen panel and the cast of King Kong showing up by surprise (Naomi Watts = OMFG). Singer then made everyone even happier by running the reel a second time!

The teaser opened with dialog from Donner's movie from the opening on Krypton from Brando. There are shots of the farm and a shot of Supes in his space suit (from the quick flashes it looks like a simple gray jump suit with the S shield) in the Kryptonian ship. We see Lois, Richard White, Perry White, Ma and Pa Kent, and lots of Clark and some Supes. Routh looks to have nailed it. There's a scene in an elevator as Clark where he appears to be channelling the spirit of Christopher Reeve. He also looks like Superman in the suit. Anyone bitching about that one photo needs to see it from better angles like in the footage.

Since the Luthor stuff just started filming, there were only two short shots of the bald Luthor but he looked GREAT.

The final shot?

OMFG that shot looks almost exactly like that in the movie. It's fucking stunning. He's floating up there and then dives down into the planet causing a sonic boom:
JUNE 30th 2006
LOOK UP IN THE SKY

By far the most awesome thing at the San Diego Comic Con 2005. It floored the 6500+ people watching it.

Singer confirmed they WILL BE using Brando as Jor-El. It will be mostly dialog, however there is some revolutionary CGI restoration being done on some footage that will appear.

He also confirmed that he will definitely be using the Williams theme big time and compared it to having Star Wars without the theme.

did he explain how superman became so damn young?

Yes. He says audiences will need to suspend their disbelief. He addressed the age of Lois by explaining that while it is a sequel to Donner's movie (Superman 1 is concrete history in this movie, II is more of a vague history) there had to be consideration in the casting as far as a movie that may lead to many other movies where the cast will age over time.

SPACED ACTION FIGURES WTF

Get some info!

I was in panels the first three days. I plan on hitting the floor for booth pics tomorrow as I am only going to the David Jaffe panel.

I was interviewed by Keven P. today for AOTS and we mentioned GA.

Oh, you will die to see it Jim Lee. You will die to see it. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! :D

I'm not sure what to make of this. I'm still a big Christopher Reeve fan, and seeing as how the first Superman movie was in theaters the year I was born - some of those images are forever cemented in my mind.

I'd love to see this done well. Singer did good things with the first X-Movie. So hopefully this one is good.

Still not overly keen on the costume tweaks. :/

Lee was all over the place.

Also, my friends and I were in the third row during the standing ovation and Blue Tights was filming the thing for the DVD, so we're going to be on it.

Tomorrow is laugh at Liefeld day as well. A bunch of people have been doing that as he doodles horrible art for twelve year olds who think he's cool.

So why the hell isn't there any footage online? I mean, it's not like they would show a Metal Gear Solid trailer at E3, tell us how awesome it is, and have no footage to download. Anyway, laugh at Liefeld extra good for me Manabyte, thanks.

Because they were using the same stuff they do at test screenings now such as IR goggles and the other tools to detect any filming.

One guy got caught in the Scanner Darkly panel and lost his camera.

Apparently someone also got caught trying to record the Superman Returns footage too and was escorted out. Hopefully with the DVD/blog crew there we'll get a journal within the week containing the footage.

After seeing the footage, Routh is perfect for Superman. Singer described being around him was like being in the room with Superman and he really looks the part.

Oh, and on another subject; Pirates 2 looks AWESOME. I have a poster of the Davey Jones design (he looks like a giant squid man) and Ghost Rider is looks much better than anyone thought).

And so my year is complete.

Nothing can replace this as my MOST WANTED thing on the planet.

PS3 and next gen games? Blu-Ray dvd's? MGS4 trailer? Bears in the superbowl? News about the next Batman flick?

You can see some of the detail in the S-shield there.

Also, there's a shot in the footage where Clark is looking at a picture of Ma and Pa Kent and it's the Kents from Donner's film.

Your list of things to get excited about is bubkiss.

Launch games always suck ass.

If Blu-ray ever catches on it is going to take awhile and people are not going to rebuy their dvds for a technology that comes out 5 years after dvd became mainstream.

Steelers are going to win the Superbowl and Tom Brady is going to jail (he was the guy who really molested those kids at Neverland ranch).

News about a movie is no reason to get excited.

Your critique of my list is bubkiss.

2006 is a long year, by the end your getting 2nd gen xbox 360 games and some later ps3 titles.

With PS3, Blu-ray will exist and I don't care about it catching on or not. As long as the movies are available in HD.

Bears will own the Steelers.. *cough*

The last is a joke.

It'd be amazing to see the three most proflic comic heroes of all time (Spider-Man, Superman and Batman in no particular order) all receiving highly respected movie adaptions at the same time (yeah I know the Spidey flicks get a mixed reaction here, but in general they've been well received). Too bad the X-Men franchise appears to be heading for the rocks...guess we can't have it all.

I wonder if anyone at WB is feeling the temptation of doing a Batman/Superman movie in a few years. If they did it right, they might as well build a Brinks plant in a WB warehouse. But they'd have to do two more Batman flicks and at least one more Supes flick after Returns before they can think about such a project.

Haha, do you know when the episode you're in is going to air?

Anyway, awesome. All they have to do is throw that John Williams theme song on there with some dramatic footage, and this is going to be fucking gigantic. :)

The Batman/Superman movie was being thrown around for a while, but I'm pretty sure its' dead now.

But yeah, the real high profile comics are getting amazing movies: X2, Spider-Man 2, and Batman Begins.. and Superman Returns looks to be great.

Jealous of the Glory that is Johnny Depp
After reading Mana's post raving about this film's preview reel, Superman Returns has become my most anticipated film of 2006. First Batman and now Superman it's DC time to shine baby!

Standing ovation means nothing with nerds. They'll applaud if Singer farted.

Its there to remind them what happened to Batman after so many sequels, and to NEVER go that far again.

There was a line in the footage that made a lot of people think of Christopher Reeve:

Richard White:
You loved him, didn't you?

Lois:
Everyone loved him. He was Superman.

Also someone asked Bryan Singer why he flew all the way from Oz to Comic Con and he said that its Comic Con and that this was Superman. :lol

Isn't there also a line from Martha Kent thats a nod to Donner's film when she tells Clark "Not even you can stop the Earth from spinning?" or something along those lines? :D
