The samsung split screen stuff is pretty crap though. Atleast on the Note 2. It doesnt work smoothy like it does on surfaces and only a some apps support it.

Well yeah, samsung sucks at software >.< Thats why I want Android to make it part of the os itself.

Main reason I want a surface is the split screen stuff.

WTF there's some dynamic contrast shit going on here (Surface 2). A quick googling says this was also the case for Surface 1. If I don't find a way to disable this, then it's a dealbreaker and I'm returning this shit.

Everyone else see it? Just scroll up and down a gaf thread, and see the brightness constantly adjusting. And yes, I've disabled auto brightness. This is like that "power saver" option that integrated Intel graphics has. Only I can't find the option to disable it with the nVidia Tegra4.

It sounds crazy.. but the extra click in the kickstand is so freaking great. I can't believe they didn't do this in the first place.

The screen, kickstand, and speed just knock it out of the park. Big upgrade over 1.

I'm probably most envious of the kickstand improvement. It's such a no brainer and looks like it really improves the usability of the device. Hopefully the Surface 3 design change isn't TOO drastic next year.

Something I love about the Surface Pro 2 I don't see mentioned a great deal is the speakers. The sound quality is pretty amazing for something in a tablet, almost surround like qualities in some instances and nice range of volume.

Agreed. These things are loud. I was using my surface as a cook book whilst playing music on it too and my housemates thought the sound was coming from the TV when they came in part way through - it was that loud and clear. Watching a film on Netflix was a joy too, full-widescreen and audio goodness.

What a bargain. Never mind...

I'm using my surface for work too after returning my work laptop. I had the touch keyboard die on me once but disconnecting/reconnecting worked a charm.

halp guys. I need a fantasy RPG that will run on my Surface Pro 2 (not Elder Scrolls), I need that fix. It doesn't have to be free, just has to work with Win8.1 and surface pro 2 (256 gig model).

Icewind Dale, Neverwinter Nights, Baldur's Gate. Unless you're looking for something new.

why don't they just show it as out of stock or coming soon instead of wasting peoples time.

Yes, I mentioned this before, very annoying. At first I thought I had a dud. You think that if it plagued the first Gen., they'd fix it for the 2nd Gen.

Edit, I'm using a Pro, so it affects both models.

The pro is cool but why anyone would deliberately choose a Surface RT with that abysmal app ecosystem? I dont get it

Because I'm watching a ufc stream and browsing GAF at the same time.

And its glorious.

I go to youtube on my Surface2 but the videos don't load? They're just black squares. I thought that Flash functionality was built in?

Edit: Wait, just ran Windows update and there's a bunch of stuff. Flash working after. Dynamic contrasting still in effect. :(

This "feature" has been around since Surface 1: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...contrast/6aacc12d-63fe-46e9-98db-3be74fdfbd11

Goddamn it, Microsoft.

I cringed when I noticed my surface 2 had this "feature". Just like with Intel atoms this is not able to be turned off! the only saving grace is that it is not nearly as bad as it is on Intel atom tablets. Where it would be flicker and jittery, but also so strong that you couldn't even view photos on the thing because faces would literally be washed out in total white!!!!

edit:
Disabling this fixes it, of course you can't see your battery charge, and I don't even know if you can charge the thing with it disabled....

How is the sound for you guys with Surface 2s? It seems to be pretty quiet and distorts a bit at high volumes for me. I don't know if it is a problem with the speakers or if the speakers on the S2 are just not as good as the S2 pro.

Typing this on a surface pro 2 at the Microsoft store. This machine with its digitizer is what every computer should be. When they get the size down to surface 2 levels, there will be no reason to buy anything else.

Its physically impossible to reduce it more without compromising battery life and heat dissipation.

Check the iFixit teardown for hardware porn of the Pro 2.

I find that when I run chrome in win8 mode, I can only run Google Play Music when chrome is the active app. E.g., if I switch to desktop, or anything else, it stops playing the music. Any way to prevent that? I know I could just run chrome in desktop mode but I'd rather not do that.

Couldn't wait and snapped up a new Pro 1 at the MS Store. Price was too good.

Same here AND they threw in a touch cover at the Edmonton opening as well. Didn't get the student discount though.

Lol.. I threw my 10 year old college card at them and they took it. So I guess we evened out. Though it's funny because I think someone in this thread said the discount didn't work with the price drop. Wonder if the store knows or cares.

I wouldn't call 100.000 apps and growing 'abysmal', besides you get full office 2013 a webbrowser that does support flash, a file system that doesn't suck ass, ports that don't require you to buy stupid adapters, a fully integrated keyboard, awesome battery life, no fan, light and it costs half as much as the pro. So yeah there are several reasons why one would choose a surface RT over a surface pro, ipad or android tablet.

Shhhh, he is only going by what he has heard and read on sterling sites like the verge and CNET. You know, those sites whose dedication to journalistic integrity goes without question.

Actually using a Surface 2 makes using an iPad or Android tablet feel like its still 2009, in my opinion...

If any gaffers in Southern California in the Rowland Hts/D.Bar/Walnut/Chino Hills (or nearby adjacent) areas want to buy a 32GB Surface 2, I will sell for $440 cash (I used a student discount to buy from MS). This will be cheaper than the $449 + tax at a retail store. The unit is perfect physically.

I think I could actually start to ignore and get past the dynamic contrasting (I saw/tried the workaround above, but I think that affected the speed of the device). Now my main thing is, after using an iPad mini for so long, I'm finding it hard to go back to 1.5 lbs.

Too bad, because the real multitasking and snapping is super cool and works great.

I think you're nuts. but if size is that important, I guess there is nothing you can do.

I think the way it is weighted and balanced makes it seem lighter than the actual weight. My OG iPad feels considerably more unwieldy than my Surface 2. I held it for about an hour and a half last night without really thinking about it.

If youre used to a mini.. I can definitely understand why the surface is a bit too big.

They fill different needs.

Anyone know if MS will do any Black Friday deals for Surface 2 Pros? I want one but I don't want to pay the price for the cover.

Definitely. I like my mini, but I'm not going to want to use it for netflix. Also, I hope some good boardgames come out for RT, so that I can use it during my colorado vacation every christmas with the family. It'll be really nice for that, with the big screen.

Sweet, looks like my 256gb pro 2 will ship soon. My order was done last monday, processed, hidden by my bank, money returned, but the order is processing, money given back to Microsoft now. I talked to the bank, and they said the reason why the money was originally returned back to me, was because they only allow payments to process for three days. They said the money will be taken out of my account when it's authorized and ready to ship my microsoft.
My money was just taken out. Yesssssss.

Wait what? They threw in a touch cover?!

Goddammit, now I regret saving up for the Surface Pro 2... are they still in stock at the West Ed store?

I too noticed this. However, it seems that when I turned the bight was up to about a third, the issue doesn't seem apparent as it did at a lower brightness setting.

Won't change a thing.
They should be able to shrink it once Broadwell comes around.
In fact, a lot of people are saying that they should've used the 6W haswell variant like the vaio tap 11, which is quite thinner than the Surface Pro 2 (though quite weaker too).

Anyone know if there's a usenet client in development for Win8? I was looking for one for my Surface2 last night but came up empty on the store. bummed me out a bit.

Me too, though I got mine at staples. $675 for the 128gig is just too good to pass up. I just hope I don't regret not having the new kickstand...

I..don't get the fuss with the kickstand. It's fine for me, and I played with the 2's a bit at the store. More options are always better but uh not $200 better..especially when the battery life and a bit more processor is all I'm getting. Once 3 is out I think the upgrade choice will be easy, but for me(us) the 1 is plenty for now.
