The part in bold is THE reason survivor needs to change how it elects it's winners. It seems to be that the jury only picks someone who didn't hurt their feelings. It's been like this for a while now and it is the worst possible way to choose a winner on this show.
Fans should select the winner. We get to see more and get to actually see who put what/which moves into place. But I digress...

The idea that the jury only rewards players who didn't hurt their feelings is pretty weird, too. We're less than a year removed from Boston Rob winning. The biggest differences between Rob and Russell? Rob played a good social game while Russell didn't, and Rob took Philip and Natalie Tenerelli to the end, while Russell voted out his biggest goats and took the well-liked Natalie White to the end. The history of Survivor is littered with folks like Chris, Todd, Parvati, etc who back stabbed people and controlled the game, but also made sure to sit next to people they could beat and convinced the jury to vote for them.
Sure, there's the occasional bland winner who just didn't piss anyone off (Bob, Aras, etc), but letting the fans vote would be way worse. If the fans started voting on the winner we'd get folks like Ozzy winning.
Rob won because he ran a cult, much like Coach did. Besides, thats the worst example you could have picked because none of his jury member were really hurt by Rob. It was the most safest, predictable and easiest win ever. But yeah, I dont like the idea of fan voting either. Dont mind Ozzy winning but the idea of Rupert winning something makes me want to puke.
Let me break this down to you; he had 4 four Zapatera member votes in his bag already. (They werent hurt like you are suggesting, just frustrated when they were in the game and were not able to break Rob's alliance and when on jury came to the senses rather being upset about it. After all it was their own idiotic decision to start throwing challenges) And Grant wasnt hurt when he got blindsided because he "discovered himself" on Survivor and decided to look the other way rather than being bitter on Rob. Ashley wasnt too bitter because it was Natalie who betrayed her trust in the end. Rob didnt lose because he had a large of jury members who were not blindsided by him and the ones he blindsided, werent too bitter.None of the jury members were hurt by Rob? He blindsided Matt twice (the second time after he poured out his heart to him), plus Grant and Andrea. However, Rob managed to keep them from being bitter towards them by using his social skills. The Zapatera members had a lot of animosity towards him early on, but he turned in a great performance at the Final Tribal and made sure he was sitting with two people no sane person (ie, not Ralph) would vote for.
Wrong again. Coach would have won if he had taken Cowboy to the end, if you followed the reunion show.Coach never seemed to have much respect from the others in his season, and he sat next to the two worst people. Rob probably would have lost in Redemption Island if he was sitting between Grant and Andrea.

Wow, I wasn't aware that Russell Hantz posted on NeoGAF.
While this isn't always true (I won't give examples if you're still going through older seasons), this is generally the case. If Russell had bothered to watch previous seasons or think beyond simply getting to the finals, he would have understood the concept.Anyway, we both really liked Russell. Yeah he was an asshole, but most of the time, it was in interviews. He played the social game pretty well, but it's always the least offensive person in the tribe that wins.
The problem I have with this is the idea of playing the "better" game. They didn't play the "better" game—they lost. I think a lot of Survivor fans fantasize about some "perfect" game in which the finals consist of "deserving" players, and the jury sets aside all emotions to calmly and rationally pick a winner. But there is no "perfect", there is no "deserving", and the idea that you can (or should) ignore personal relationships when you're struggling to survive on a beach for several weeks is kind of absurd. The best players took people to the end that they could beat and made sure they were the least offensive option. Sandra was hardly a "bad player"; she won twice! And her entire strategy the first time was quite literally to not be the most offensive person. I'm generally not a fan of the coattail riders who win, but it's not because they "played poorly".It's annoying because they always bring a girl along with them...Sophie won it last season, Mick and Russell played a better game than the nameless female that won that season (we watched it literally...2 days ago...and I can't remember her name)...Sandra won Heroes vs. Villains and she was horrendous at everything.
The weird thing about that season (well, one of a great many weird things) was that it actually got more boring towards the end. Yul was so calm and so clearly in control that it made the endgame very blah. It was much more exciting and fun when Aitutaki was fighting and winning every immunity challenge. My favorite season that we've watched (and we've watched about...5-6 now) is Cook Islands. Yun and Ozzy's dominance was unbelievable. It was so close at the end, I was rooting for Ozzy because i love him, but Yun was great, too. Amazing that he didn't fuck his tribe up by letting the girl play the idol at the end.
I'm not sure if you're speaking specifically about the situations you outlined, but women have won fewer than half of the seasons. Several men have won after taking a girl to the finals.Anyway, always bet on the girl to win the million dollars.
I think even getting to the finals should be commended, though. I read that funny115.com link (not funny AT ALL...very painfully forced 'comedy' writing) and he's acting like it was a gigantic downful. The truth of the matter is, based on my limited Survivor watching anyways, the final 3 (or 2) is a crapshoot. Getting there is incredibly hard/lucky/whatever, but Russell surrounded himself with people with enough power to keep him in and not blindside him. That's pretty impressive. While this isn't always true (I won't give examples if you're still going through older seasons), this is generally the case. If Russell had bothered to watch previous seasons or think beyond simply getting to the finals, he would have understood the concept.
Russell played the game like it was a game, he never really got emotionally invested until Redemption when he got voted off early. But he was just there fucking around with people (burning socks, dumping canteens) to try and force himself into power. No, he wasn't ever really likable by the rest of the cast, he was still a good player. An interesting theory that was insinuated a few weeks ago on Rob Cesternino's podcast was that the game changed radically once the hidden immunity idol was brought on as a regular feature. Early winners had to rely on a very good social game and/or important challenge wins, whereas players like Russell centered their entire game on finding and manipulating the power that comes from the hidden immunity idol. Perhaps if the idol hadn't been an issue, he would have worked harder on maintaining good relationships...
I agree. I just mean, it's so easy to root for an Ozzy or a Matt who consistently dominate the physical aspect. When you're constantly winning immunity, providing food for your tribe, being an all-around nice guy (if not competitive), it's just shitty to see a 'coattail riders' win out.The problem I have with this is the idea of playing the "better" game. Eh, I really enjoyed it. You just have to wonder when the streak is going to end...and it didn't. Pretty incredible. The weird thing about that season (well, one of a great many weird things) was that it actually got more boring towards the end. Yul was so calm and so clearly in control that it made the endgame very blah. It was much more exciting and fun when Aitutaki was fighting and winning every immunity challenge.
Pretty much yeah. I have only seen about...6-7 seasons so far...and it's been mostly females (other than Yul...can't believe I already forgot his name).I'm not sure if you're speaking specifically about the situations you outlined, but women have won fewer than half of the seasons. I'm no Russell fan, but that was a colossally stupid move on Zapatera's part. Amazing that even after all this time, so many players are willing to throw a challenge to get rid of a player they don't like (or feel threatened by).Watching Redemption Island now, nearing the end, and he was voted off right away because of who he is. Then what happened? The tribe gets dismantled because they lost their numbers after voting off a strong player. Terrible strategy. And poor Matt lol.
Yeah, it makes for much less interesting TV. Thankfully, Survivor has surprisingly few lazy winners. Most - even ones that weren't great at challenges - worked their damnedest to stay in the game and massage the jury. It's one of the reasons I still love the show.I just mean, it's so easy to root for an Ozzy or a Matt who consistently dominate the physical aspect. The premise sounds very dumb. I doubt it makes it past one season.Russell is getting his own show on A&E.

I just don't understand why anyone would be mean to another tribe member after watching in other seasons how that comes back to bite you in the ass.Let's see how long it takes for Colton to unleash some of that racism on Christina.
Methinks GAF will not enjoy tonight's episode.
Colton should have been on BB13. He would have been amazing on the feeds.
She should throw down
And once again, how the fuck is Alicia a Special Ed teacher?!?
Wow, Alicia and Colton are some disgusting people.
In order for that to happen, Jonas and Leif would need to have a spine.Seriously...I've disliked players before, but these two are pretty much at the top of that list at this point. I'm hoping one of them goes tonight...would be amazing.
Wow, Alicia and Colton are some disgusting people.
In order for that to happen, Jonas and Leif would need to have a spine.
And Tarzan would need to be sane.
Perhaps Colton will have a drama queen moment and get medevaced.Yeah, I'm not holding my breath for that to happen, but I have to have hope.
Kidney stone for Colton?Perhaps Colton will have a drama queen moment and get medevaced.
(Yeah, don't count on it.)
Uh oh Karma!
It sucks that he's gone.appendicitis?
It sucks that he's gone.
