Switch 2…a true next gen Switch or a Switch Pro?

Is the Switch 2 a true next gen Switch?

It’s the switch pro from years ago. There is nothing here showing it’s close to newer architecture. Nintendo thought that’s good enough and waited for component prices to drop to make margins. As seen by Japan pricing. Is it good enough for now sure. But even on the direct we saw it struggling with AAA last gen games. So maybe it’s the switch 2 but like before it’s old hardware. Luckily for Nintendo that doesn’t matter because most of their games are cartoons so they will be fine this gen. The indies and first party games will carry the system by next gen for ps6/xbox/pc it will be left behind like the previous gen. Round and round we go.

To me its is not just because of graphics but also it will have its own exclusive.

PS5pro is not new system, still PS5 with better visuals but it will never gonna have its own exclusive game that only works on Pro.

I get the desire to hold people accountable for their takes, but this entire thread is:

The Simpsons GIF

You call 2.56x the pixel count and twice the frame rate "slightly" better?

It’s not to minimize it. Switch 2 ain’t competing with actual console power though, and it’s 2025….

Switch 2 could have been a lot more powerful had they gone with more modern SoC

It's a portable. Of course, it can't compete with a home console.

A lot more powerful? How many mobile chips do you think are "a lot more powerful" at a price that makes sense? Hint: none.

They are charging $450 for this thing and it’s got 8nm chips in it allegedly

This isn’t a cheap piece of hardware

I would have paid up for a more modern SoC

For what? Double the Framerate and slightly higher resolution?

It’s basically an Xbox one to Xbox One X leap, or about 5x

Which is good of course, but the switch 1 baseline was extremely low to begin with
Zelda BOTW on Switch 2 is a simple remaster, not a next gen Zelda with better geometry, ray tracing etc.

For me, they didn't do a good enough job showing why, same as the PS5 pro didn't do a good enough job on selling me on spending that much money for it.

Is it stronger? Yes, of course, it just didn't sell me on the generational leap that costs 80 dollars per game and 450 at entry.

Again, that's my personal view.

It not a remaster, they just cranked the dials up a bit to suit the new hardware. I can play it right now at 60fps 4k on my PC no work required.

Its glorious btw.

I think saying Nintendo didnt sell the generational jump well (which is honestly speaking true) is a different thing than the clown shoes take in the OP that it's not one at all, but is just a Pro update lol

I felt the same then i watched yesterdays treehouse and was sold 100%. Apart from the expensive games of course.

The direct itself was terrible.

Yeah, the Direct did a terrible job of selling me on the games. It was only when I watched their gameplay streams with DK and Mario Kart and Metroid that I realized this actually is a pretty good jump lol

There’s no more modern SOC they could have used. It’s based on the T239, the most recent Tegra chip.

To me, no. There's no generational gap between MK8 and World, same between Mario Odyssey and DK Bananza. But anyways generational gaps are getting smaller and smaller.

Look I won't lie. The more I see of MK:W the more I'm tempted. The whole direct could have just been that and DK.

But I've just gotta be smart and wait it out. Prices will drop, games will come out, and eventually it's going to be a package that would be stupid not to buy.

Its a new gen because it will have games specified for Switch 2. Yes there is barely an improvement over Switch but the above point negates that.

PS5 Pro is barely better than standard PS5 (50%) with the same CPU and almost the same memory.

Switch 2 has few times more powerful GPU, few times more powerful CPU, few times more RAM and other differences. It's full on next gen jump compared to previous hardware.

At minimum its around 6x more performance than Switch 1 without taking into account DLSS. The CPU is also way better.

This is a legit next generation console, not a Pro.

The main thing that will hold back Switch 2 is memory bandwidth, but at least it should have a lot more than Switch 1, but still will be a bottleneck for some games.

I think it's wild how people are looking at the graphics and comparing them to PS5 and saying they suck.

This is a portable device. It's 10 times smaller than a PS5. It's WILD to me how good the visuals look, most notably on 1st-party games. Prime 4 running at 120fps is insane, and I never could have predicted that.

This thing is a beast of a handheld in a package smaller and thinner than the Steam Deck. And I never in my wildest dreams expected a VRR screen with HDR.

In the portable space, the Switch 2 is priced way better for the tech you're getting than any of the other handheld PCs, even the $400 Steam Deck, especially when you consider things like the active cooling dock.

Sentences like this make me wonder if people are trolling, or if they just genuinely do not understand how basic gaming technology and processing works.

Where are you pulling this from? Do you have the data to back this up?

Serious question as well because my eyes tell me it's a bigger jump than that.

Xbox one was about 1 TF

Xbox One X was 5TF

It was a pretty big leap for a mid gen refresh

Switch 2 is a generational leap over switch, but it’s still not “current gen equivalent” in docked mode versus year 2020 consoles

Why is everyone bringing PS5 Pro? Lol why not bring $2000 Nvidia GPUs?

Do you guys need to watch Cerny seminar again?

The bar is way lower for Switch 2 to achieve such increases which are still laughable givin the price and the performance for 2025. Steam Deck released 6 years ago and Switch 2 barely edges that!!

Wow what an achievement!! You can now play PS4 quality games at lower resolutions.. Yay!

Sometimes I forget the bar and the demand of Nintendo fans are way way waaaay lower than the rest of the industry.

Anyone voting no are out of their fucking mind. This is phantom liberty and CDPR did not even bother to bring it to PS4 or PS4 pro or Xbox because of limitations

We also saw lumen and nanite in Fortnite, again missing features from older gen after they updated to UE5.

How the fuck is this not next gen lol? PS5 plays 1080p30 PS4 games at 1440p60 and doesn’t even have ML upscaling. Switch 2 plays blurry 720-900p Switch games at 1440p60. If Switch 2 isn’t next gen, then neither are the PS5 and SX.
