Switch 2 cpu bottleneck issues: Digital foundry

Gamer79

Predicts the worst decade for Sony starting 2022
It looks like the same cpu issues that bottlenecked the ps4 and Xbox one will probably be the same issues as switch. I understand it because it's a mobile chip and has to have battery power restraints. A portable ps4 like Power seems to be the case.

Do we really need another thread on DF's experience with Cyberpunk on Switch 2? This is just a clip from the full video posted here

https://www.neogaf.com/threads/df-direct-weekly-209-cyberpunk-2077-switch-2-hands-on-etc.1683046/

That said, they say multiple times that regardless of some hitches, the game runs pretty well for the most part, especially considering it's not finished yet. They didn't 100% conclude the CPU will infact be a bottleneck for the console. The assume it might be. We really need to stop taking what they say as gospel, especially when they follow up what they say with "maybes" and "my assumptions" and "this could be".

As they pointed out, it is pre-release code and it is the first time Cyberpunk is running natively on ARM. They are also not 100% certain if it is CPU related and is just speculation at this point in time.

Regardless the IPC difference between A78 and Jaguar is known and the Switch 2 CPU should be 2-2.5x as powerful as the one in the PS4.

Same thing happens with the steam deck, the TDP only allows you to maximize the cpu or gpu, but not both at the same time. Switch 2 has a better cpu, but it will still be limited by its tdp limit. Nuking the resolution on cyberpunk isn't going to do much if your cpu bound.

It has to be compared to something in order to gage performance. I don't get what the issue is.
Because it is far more capable than two consoles that run on shit architecture that was outdated back in 2013.

The only relevant comparisons are the Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Series S and the Switch 1 for remastered games.

Wtf do they expect?

Between this and their recent coverage of the deck, what do they really expect from devices in this form factor?

These guys become blithering idiots whenever they are not doing promotional material on behalf of Microsoft.

I agree with comparing it to those handhelds, but with these specs, it's much more appropriate to compare it to the XB1 than the XBSS.

Maybe don't take a GAF user's thread title as gospel for what DF said?

Not watching shit from DF about Switch 2 until it releases, they're clearly driving traffic using console wars. And BTW, Switch 2 CPU should probably be a problem for some games, not sure yet, I'll rather wait for actual analysis with direct footage with the console in hand.

Let's be real. The switch 2 is going to have a bunch of third party games on it that run and look like crap with low resolutions, low framerates, a mixture a both, and low quality textures in certain areas. Alot of people are going to be playing the switch 2 hooked up to there tv which means these flaws are much more noticeable which in turn means you're not getting a quality experience compared to the competition. If you wanna ignore those flaws because you play it in handheld mode then fine, but anyone expecting this machine to perform miracles were fooling themselves.

Their constant comparison of this thing to a PS4/Xbone is getting irritating now. The area of the game they keep showcasing can't even run on last gen consoles.
What should it be compared to then? It's closest to the performance of the base PS4. I'm also surprised it's running so well and that CDPR got it running in 7 weeks. But also, I expect the experience to be sub-par

Their message in the direct is that we shouldn't expect a 10W mobile SoC to run Cyberpunk perfectly in the most demanding sections, and that the performance that is shown is already impressive.

That is not accurate. The source code is 7 weeks old. They did not make it in 7 weeks, thats bullshit talk.

specurlating for console wars bout unfinish games they knows nothing about cpu even admitted it

"Broadly speaking its helpful to think of the Switch 2 as kind of like, you know, roughly a PS4 level in terms of comparable titles but it can do so much more in terms of storage, bespoke graphical features, possibly the CPU is also faster…" FF7 Remake: "The presentation is PS4 levels or there abouts. So broadly speaking quite comparable to PS4 if not actually a bit more of a favorable experience compared to PS4" Switch 2: "As a first generation ballpark, so to speak, PS4 is a very good comparison point I think."

Honestly, this is a bit annoying. We don't have the full specs, games aren't finished and I'm not sure we need a thread for each opinion that DF is publishing.

It's a handheld.
Spot on. Why is that so hard to understand? This is not a heavy, bulky console! It is a slim tablet in a small form factor with 2 controllers attached to it that sits in a dock allowing for 4k visuals on a 4k TV! Nothing more. Nothing less. Yet these clowns are expecting it to match the Xbox Series x/PS5 component wise...

????????

No one said that. They're talking about the ballpark visual / performance level they saw in their hands on. They're actually surprised CDPR allowed a heavier part of the game to be demoed instead of a lighter, emptier area without any gunfights.

I swear some folks here have severe DF derangement syndrome. It's incredibly easy to just not open a DF thread guys. Try it sometime.
