$499 switch 2? $80 game? In this economy? Should be a problem but consumers show time and time again that they are willing to pay up.

Don't ask me why, but the reality is a small minority may complain but people don't speak with their wallets. Or rather they DO speak with their wallets and what they are saying is: charge me more plz, I'm ready to pay whatever it takes
 
It's Nintendo.

No one should be shocked. Only 1 place to play Nintendo games (non emulated) and that is on a Nintendo console.

No one is buying this for 3rd party, albeit nice to have some options, but it is ALL about Nintendo IP's here.
 
RTX 5090s have sold out everywhere. RTX 5080s have sold out everywhere. Switch 2 has sold out everyone.


Looks like everyone's willing to pay up despite the noise. Well, except for for the PS5 Pro lol
 
For me it's very simple, it has games I want to play and I have the money to buy one….so I have no reason not to.

There are things that's not worth asking price and for me that was PS5pro so I decided not to buy it.

This should be common sense by now. Making a post about it on here and saying 'don't ask me why' should disqualify you from all intellectual debates on video games going forward.
 
It reminds me how much of an echo chamber the internet really is. Though, I still feel like the Switch 2 was going to sell out at launch regardless because the diehards and scalpers will buy it, but I'm more interested to see its sales pace after Christmas. The release being in June gives us a nice little 6 month window to see how it does leading up to the holidays.
 
The other reality is 80%+ of the eventual install base are buying a console (any console roughly speaking) after the 1st year. 60%+ are buying after 2 years. ...

So anyone saying they aren't buying at launch means little.

The hardcore gamers and Nintendo fans will be there day one. Always.

The real test will be if the general public will show up.

History tells us they might not. For example, the DS was a hit with the masses, but they didn't turn up in the same numbers for the 3DS. Same thing happened with the Wii and Wii U.

I think the same thing will happen with the Switch 2. It won't be a Wii U flopped, but it won't see the same success as the Switch.

$449 hybrid device with VRR, HDR, and 120hz screen with 3.1TF performance plus DLSS and RT features.

Steam Deck for example 60hz LCD screen with dock is at $480.

Switch 2 hardware price is unquestionably great with the specs it comes with.

Not that the 3DS was near the DS, but selling almost 80 million units is not exactly a flub.
 
I feel like this is some kind of out of touch Nintendo fan not realizing where we've been at for years. Not just anecdotally thinking that Nintendo demands the money and they're going to get it. No. This is the way it's been with electronics for a while now.

The fact that people want to pay $80 for games with a digital code or whatever is a whole another can of worms. Stuff is still too expensive even by Nintendo standards and they will take advantage of their fan base who will gladly take it up the rear like George Carlin once said, servicing the account.

Lol, you're paying for a mini, handheld pc, versus a locked down tablet, that only plays nintendo 1st party games, that go for almost 100 bucks a pop, and whatever 3rd parties manage to get games to run on it.. Plus paywalled online, no achievements/trophies. Keep coping, nintenbro.

$450 for Switch 2 is not expensive. Gaming is a very affordable hobby compared to most.

I was going to say gamers are just poor and cheap, but that's not true. Gamers who spend their free time on gaming message boards do seem to be, though.

Selling out preorders is pretty common when it comes to new generation console launches. Xbox One launched $100 more than PS4 and it sold out as well. Don't think it says much at this point.

I still think in the long run the price might hurt the sales, and it will struggle to reach the same level of success as the Switch 1 (while still being successful). But there was no chance these would be sitting on shelves at launch

Has Nvidia ever actually said how many 5090s and 80s they've made and sold?
Selling out is hardly impressive if you don't share the actual numbers.
 
So you had to lie about the price to make it look unreasonable? $450 is probably the least they could charge without taking a loss when considering tariffs and likely having to subsidize the cheaper japanese hardware to some extent.

But I do think it could be an issue if they don't have room to drop the price after the early adopters have their systems. We'll see.
 
The companies are waiting for the success of the Switch 2 so they can increase their prices too..

They're all gonna do it. Don't be naive. Nintendo is simply the first one out the door. Unless of course the Switch 2 fails. Then it's a whole other conversation. But what are the odds.. really..

5080 and 5090 were paper launches. Several vendors complained about the lack of stock available.

Yeah, when people actively support bad business practices, that undermine the hobby for me, I get upset. That's why Nvidia is pricing their GPUs at 2 grand. Because people like you happily paid a scalper 1800 for a 3090.

More like cherry picking the price of the mario kart bundle.

Which was actually a fair deal.
I'm spending the same price on this next gen system as I did my ps5, but i spent more more on the pro version, my steam deck and my rog ally.

$450 for the system isnt a problem.

As for up pricing, I dont blame nintendo for the current economics, shit is getting more expensive. Just within the last few months, a ton of the groceries I get have gone up in price as much as 25%

Counterpoint: this is nowhere near the first time a console cycle change has resulted in prices going up. Try like 20+ years ago.

No one I know is complaining about the price of the console. In the U.S., the price is $449, not $499. Most people have problems with the software pricing. There are millions of people who will pay just about anything for a new Nintendo console. It was always going to sell out. The thing to keep track of will be whether it maintains this momentum and whether the $80 games sell close to the same numbers as the Switch 1. I don't think they will.

Not surprising.
That's the thing, if you have a low number of avialble products and they sell out it doesn't necessarily mean there's a large demand for it.
For the Switch 2 I actually do think it will sell millions of units during the first few months.

Consumer debt is at its highest point in history, just saying. Vast majority of Gen Z have financial literacy of a toddler.
The very existence and popularity of subscription apps as well as billions in unclaimed gift cards tell you all you need to know about people ability to make sound financial decisions.

Is this an American currency issue?

In the UK the switch is £425 with Mario Kart. The Ps5 is £479 (disc equivalent) with Astro Bots first effort

Mario Kart world is £67 digitally £75 physical
Donkey Kong £59 / £67

Most of Sony's first party efforts are £70

Unsure what the huge outpouring of rage is about in recent weeks unless the States doesn't correlate to the rest of the world pricing...

Even the switch 2 is not sold out here. You can still go to GS and preorder one.

The price of the console is fine, plus it's $449. Trying to make the argument that it's expensive just because "it doesn't have the power of a PS5" being a device with a battery powered mobile chip is the stupidest thing I've ever seen in an enthusiast forum. It's literally the argument my 11 year old nephew would bring to the table.

Anyway the price of the games is a problem, especially mario kart, and can sadly set a bad precedent for games from other companies.
 
The PS3 was sold out everywhere at launch. It was very difficult to find one. That was the most expensive console that gen. Still didn't sell well until after the price cut to $299 along the rebranding.

We have to wait to see until next year to actually know if this console will sell well.

For that to happen the general public and causal gamers would need to be on board. Looking at previous examples, it's highly likely this won't happen.

It was more shocking to release a 500$ console with 80$ games 5 years ago than it is now I believe.

Besides inflation, on a very personal note, 5 years ago I was making half the salary I am making now, so the impact was worse.
