Switch/ Switch 2 may not be the most powerful gaming devices but they give developers the most range when it comes to creating gameplay ideas.

For example there are games that are better with a vertical view or in table top mode . There is only a few games that give you this option because devs know that most people will not be playing their console on a screen that can be turned vertical. But every Switch dev has the creative freedom of knowing that they can make that table top or vertical view game because every Switch can be turned vertically or laid flat on a table.

Now we have the Switch 2 with dual mouse controls as standard & it opens up new gameplay ideas for devs like making games where you place the Switch 2 on a table in-between 2 players & they can play games like Air Hockey or Pong .
Even if the devs are not feeling creative every game can be made with Mouse or traditional controls because it's all standard on the Switch 2.

jack off please GIF

The mouse controls are a one way ticket to arthritis. That mouse looked extremely tiny and extremely uncomfortable to use for adult sized hands. I feel like the joy-cons for the original switch were terrible as well and wayyyy too tiny for my hands.

I know and I hate that but it's there & Nintendo does a good job of demoing the ideas for others to at least try.
The closest we ever got to the mass adoption of alternate gameplay styles and control schemes was the Wii. The closest we have now is VR.

Devs are fine with traditional styles and so are gamers. Whatever Switch 2 does is unfortunately not going to move the needle. Even indie devs don't care to adopt more unique gameplay styles leveraging the newer control hardware we have.

I don't think they are meant to be used like a traditional mouse all day.

I believe they will be the evolution of the Atari Paddle controller but instead of twisting the big knob from side to side you can physically move these joycons around on a surface.

they're not going to take advantage of that added range. Not many of them at least.

You're pretty much only going to see Nintendo and some indie devs attempt novel uses for the technology, but I'd expect the vast majority of FPS, RTS, and CRPG ports to take advantage of mouse controls much like how most shooters on the OG Switch have gyro aiming.

Eh. It's arguable. Switch had innovation too with the hardware but the vast majority of games were something that could have been played on any console. Face buttons, analog sticks, and triggers.

Very, very few were made the way so many Wii or DS games were, where to port the game to another platform would either be extremely difficult, or not possible. But that's what made the Switch popular. AAA Nintendo first-party games with a normal controller, and you could seamlessly play on TV or on the go. It didn't/doesn't need to be more than that. That's what people wanted/still want.

Window dressing like "mouse-Con" or an IR camera that detect distance are not likely to become widely used, or turn into a major selling point.

Well, then I am looking forward to some studio developing a fast paced, competitive first person shooter on the Switch 2 that requires precise mouse input to succeed.

PC can do all of that an much more...
And what crazy dev is going to make a PC game around dual mouse controls or table top mode?

I know you can emulate old table top arcade games on PC and I even play PS5 Pinball games in vertical & table top mode but I'm talking about devs having the freedom of knowing that everyone can play the games that they create with these features.

Everyone that wants including those that would do it on Switch 2.

Seeing nothing come out of Wii Motion Plus was very disappointing. Instead we got some sucky motion stuff in Mario Odyssey with its joycons. Wii may not have been very exciting graphics wise, but it had one of my most favourite controllers of all consoles.

Hope we get good mouse peripherals for the S2. Just thinking about using the Joycon as a mouse makes my hands cry.

It will be the shittiest console on the market surpassing even Series S. There is no sugarcoating it. Luckily they have good first party titles which is a big saving grace.

Market Wii making it look like it comes with Motion Plus, make millions of rabid impulse buys, release add on motion accessory with a few games and move on forever.
