Syfy Cancels Defiance

Still, more is never a bad thing

That is not always true...

Supernatural has gone on 6 seasons beyond its intended 5 season arc and with a FEW exceptions, it has been no where near as good as season 1-5. I would hardly call Supernatural good television any more (Despite the fact I still watch it)

Sometimes shows just need to end before they overstay their welcome.

The show was ok but like most of Syfy's shows in the last few years, seems to air at random times of the year and does wierd half season seasons. It makes it really hard to actually follow the show unless you have a DVR set up to auto record new episodes.

All three were essentially done. Eureka had a great ending, Warehouse 13 probably went on slightly longer than it should've and Defiance's last season finale was a series finale for the most part.

Eureka was a bitter cancellation. Was Syfy's highest rated show at the time but cancelled due to cost in favor of cheaper Reality shows.

No one commented on the irony of using a Supernatural Gif, Supernatural is the Smallville of CW.

Supernatural is the Supernatural of CW. It's the last show still alive from Pre-CW days. America's Top Model was the other show and that's been announced as ending.

Smallville started on the wb, ended on the CW, It is also has the record for the longest continuously run North American science fiction show.

Supernatural started on The WB and is still running on The CW. It's on Season 11 vs. Smallville's 10. Why Smallville is considered Sci Fi, I have no idea.

What? All three season aired during the summer time every year since it debuted in 2013, with no breaks in between the (13 episode) seasons.

Comics have always fallen under the Scifi/Fantasy banner.

Fantasy makes more sense than Sci Fi. While Sci Fi and Fantasy can have overlap they should be considered different genres. Under that qualification though, Supernatural's 11 seasons would presumably unseat Smallville.

Eh.. S1 started in April and ran to July, S2 and 3 started sometime later than that.

I'm in the dark so far about The Expanse. How many 13 eps seasons can their materials go on?

depends on how they do it, but it is space opera so it can go forever... It will be major miracle if Expanse ends up being great though, books are pretty outlandish and awesome... Hopefully they manage to pull it off, books are great so thats good starting point.

Out of things that I want to watch [or at least check out], SyFy still has a lot of good content ahead of them:

Returning:
13 Monkeys
Killjoys
Dark Matter

Coming this year:
Magicians [book adaptation]
The Expanse [book adaptation]
Childhoods End [book adaptation]

Coming next year:
Hyperion [book adaptation]
Gateway [book adaptation]
Ringworld [book adaptation] [there were no public updates on this project for more than a year and a half, maybe they won't make it]

gotta say, big props on them for investing close to half a billion into all of these....

It's much less Science anything and much more Fantasy everything.

I don't know. When I think of Fantasy, I think a huge focus on "magic" or "supernatural" or "fantastical lands". Super science definitely borders on magic sometimes, and I'm sure Smallville has some magic in it, but I wouldn't consider having those elements as small parts of the show enough to justify calling it fantasy any more than I would call Star Wars fantasy because the Force is a huge element, or Battlestar fantasy because it has
angels (or whatever)
in it. What about it specifically makes you think it crosses the border in to fantasy (I haven't seen all of it)?

Morrigan Stark

Arrogant Smirk
I watched S1 and found it boring and wasn't motivated to continue.

I didn't hate it per se. I couldn't find any specific complaint about it. Just... I didn't care about any of the characters at all. I tried to, but I just couldn't give two shits somehow. Not sure why, they weren't exactly bad, but... would S2 really change my mind? If the final episode concludes things satisfactorily I might be inclined to give it another shot if I'm ever starving for sci-fi.

I really enjoyed the show. The first season wasn't that strong, but I even enjoyed that. It kind of reminded me of old school Star Trek style sci fi except dirtier and modern. It definitely improved in the second season. If you made it through the first and gave up, you should give that a chance.

That's because you're thinking High Fantasy. But when you start mixing things like Eye beams, magic, humans not only living through radiation that would kill them but gaining powers from them, defying the laws of physics, demons, angels, vampires, etc.. all into the same mixing pot.. then it's much more Fantasy than anything else. The majority of the science-esque stuff (especially early on in the history of comics) doesn't pass the Sci Fi mustard. They've gotten better about that over time but.. there's just way too much stuff that's all over the place for Sci Fi to fit more accurately than Fantasy.

Well there are 9 novels planned which take you to 2019. Currently there are 5 available with a few e-novel side stories. If the show is good, it could be on the air for years. Fingers crossed! It's some of my favourite sci-fi novels.

If it's £$&!ing Syfy you just know they'll either cancel it early (if it's brilliant but not popular) or flog it to death by pushing it 2 seasons too far (whether it's good or not if it IS popular)
