Tap Water - How can you drink your disgusting water?

As previous posters said it's because it is hard water you are not used to drinking. Its okay to drink just a lot more minerals in the water.

In London Im happy to drink tap water. Some people I know dont like the slight chlorine flavour of it so they put it in a jug in the fridge and the chlorine leaves it.

I was living in China, my tap water produced all sorts of precipitates on boiling and scum floated to surface. Needless to say I didn't even use it for toothbrushing and bought bottled water. Im a chemist so I got some silver nitrate from internet and put in my Chinese tap water to check for heavy metals and damn its dangerous to drink.

Bottled water in Europe and America is a great example of want over need, except in a desert lol

People defending European Water?! We really do have a defence force for everything.

I everyone prefers the water from their home town as you've grown up on it. Does the hardness of the water affect the degrees of it? Always noticed that in other countries water seems much warmer.

Wow, way to generalize OP. It´s true that Barcelona´s water is terrible, but I live in the north of Spain and the tap water here is great, same in almost everywhere I´ve visited here. I´m sure that even in your country there are places where you could go and taste less-than-fantastic tap water.

Hard water is hard because its passed through chalk/limestone aquifiers and will therefore contain some calcium/magnesium, some people don't like the taste of that too much, but it doesn't make it dangerous to drink or change the temperature

The worst thing about hard water is the limescale you get on all your taps and appliances

Tap water is safer than bottled water so whenever I've been travelling around Europe, I drink straight from the tap. I'm in UK and only go for tap water.

Tap water in Germany is probably as good as it can get, still depends on the area though as sometimes they have to tap into the groundwater if no other source is available at that can have a higher amount of chalk and nobody wants to pay for the cost of filtering that.

Best water is always close to mountains though.

Edit: We always used bottled water for drinking and toothbrushing when we were in southern Europe because if you weren't used to the water you could get stomach problems. Don't know if that is still the case but I still only use bottled water there out of habit.

Barcelona's tap water tastes terrible (something common across the Mediterranean coastline; Galicia's is fantastic in comparison), but it's perfectly safe to drink. Bottled water is a total scam and considerably less safe since its subject to less regulations, leading to things such as thousands of people being poisoned with nasty noroviruses.

If you live in a developed country and buy bottled water because you think it's safer (I'm not touching thigs such as taste and the folks with some severe renal issues), you are being conned big time.

But what if you are a Tourist in those countries..?

sure about that?

Galicia has terrific tap water. I was shocked last year when I was on vacation there and my bathroom sink wouldn't get stained after a week of use.

Meanwhile, the water in my mother's hometown in Castilla la Mancha is so hard they need to cook chickpeas using mineral water and cleaning the windows with it is a fool's errand. It's crazy.

But what if you are a Tourist in those countries...

It won't kill you. You can drink it at night safely and brush your teeth with it. And water at most restaurants is bottled anyway. Honestly, you are coming off a bit smug.

Tap water in the Netherlands is the best thing ever. Tastes exactly like bottled water.

In fact, some (all?) bottled water from the Netherlands is actually tap water.

UK has very high tap water standards, also up here in Scotland it's not hard like some places down south because the limestone in the mountains acts as a natural filter.

The Netherlands has perfect tap water.

We're probably one of the best in the world when it comes to organising the production of tap water.

Explains a lot about Dutch and German toilets.

We just like to say goodbye when we flush.
And it's a moment of inspection.
We also have a lot of other toilets in our country. In fact, in my own house i have one like you posted and one that you would consider normal

I don't drink tap water and I didn't know it was a common thing til last year. I've always been told to just boil it.

It tastes fine here in England though.

sorry if I seem smug... but when I am on holiday, I would like to experience more than just the local rest rooms and toilets. I was in Tenerife some years ago for New Year. Drank tap water because people said it was fine.. come New Years Eve, I almost vomited and shat myself to the tune of the clock... it was a terrible experience.

So I would like to avoid that again, so I drink Bottled water. The first thing I heard when I entered the Bus in Spain last week (on the way to the hotel) was, "Do NOT drink the tap water, always buy bottled water." .... that was the local guide who told us that.

I might seem smug to you, but I am surprised at the difference in water and how some people can drink it without getting stomach problems.

Tap water in Austria is incredible. Almost no difference to bottled mineral water. Guess having all those mountains and thermal springs pays off.

I was surprised that when I was in Tokyo this year the tap water tasted like pure chlorine, despite having read before that the japanese are so very proud of their water quality.

Sydney water seems fine drink 4L+ a day.

Sydney water is great. When we lived in Florida my wife hated the taste of the tap water so much, we bought huge 4 gallon containers of Publix water for the fridge but I still usually drank from the tap despite the taste.

London water was only ever bearable for me if I added cordial to it to mask the flavour. Most other developed countries I've lived in or visited were fine, though.

Spain. Some days it's terrible. I need to to drink it fast after pouring it on the glass as the taste of chlorine is terrible. If I use it for ice cubes, it ruins the taste of drinks. Oddly enough, this is more of a city problem and water purifying plants. In the faraway village where I used to go during holydays, the water was always great. Comes directly from a natural spring certified ok for drinking, no purifying process.

In the odd occasion that I need to buy a bottle of water, I try to enjoy it as much as possible.

Now American toilets, I never understood why the water comes so high you dip your dick in it while you're taking a shit. That cannot be hygenic.

I saw them for the first time two years ago in the Bangkok airport. I thought they were broken and if I flushed everything would flood.

Tap water here (Germany) is fine. There is no chlorine in it and it has pretty high standards, it's basically as safe to drink as bottled water.

Tap in new york city is delicious

Isn't there usually TONS of chlorine in US tap water? I tasted it in various locations (California, Arizona, Nevada, Wisconsin, Illinois and a couple others) and it's disgusting.

These are "old school" toilets. Atleast in Germany they are being replaced by the ones that look like the American toilets (minus the tons of water that try to get to your dick and ass). I still feel like the old school ones are better, though. You never have to worry about ass or dick being hit by water and you can inspect your shit.

Louisville, Kentucky is one of the best cities with regular ass tap water in America so I get by pretty fine.

Sweden here so no complaints. Best drink available. Always fresh, always cold and served from every tap around.

New York tap water is actually legit, they have a huge system of viaducts to bring fresh water down from upstate

Uh, aren't you literally not supposed to consume water in Spain in any form? Every time I've been on holiday I've seen signs to not even use it in cooking. Bottled water under every circumstance.

I live in Scotland though, so perfect water every time.

That's just baffling.

Drink tap water all the time (Birmingham,UK) been raised on it, so I'm used to it. Only from the Kitchen taps, never the bathroom taps....

Some of my mates would flat out refuse tap water though, and only drink bottled stuff.

It's quite some years ago, but we have been told the same in the Castellon/Tarragona/Peniscola region (Costa del Azahar, afair). Used bottled water for cooking (supermarkets always had tons of supplies of these 6 or 8L bottles), while tap water was only a-okayish for brushing your teeth.

Same thing I heard in Santa Susanna last week.

Excellent way to get people to buy overpriced bottled water.

The water in Frankfurt has never been very good whenever I visit family there.

I think it might be the only thing my mum is prepared to admit is better in Manchester than in Frankfurt

Well, just recently, Fuerteventura. But I guess the water there might be different and it's been years since I've been to mainland Spain.

The Canary Islands are a bit of an odd exception due to their geography. That is absolutely not the norm. Being volcanic islands in the middle of the ocean with little rain they are largely supported by desalination, so the water tastes horrible. But it's 100% safe. Being a huge tourist destination, the signs are probably there to avoid complains.

The region has shit water (not unlike much of the Med region), but again, it's perfectly safe to drink. Using bottled water for cooking is overkill unless you work in a restaurant or the minerals fuck with your ingredients (chickpeas are notorious for not cooking properly with hard water).

I see. Well, maybe it was worse back in the day. My parents first went there in like ~1985 and came back once or twice every year and just continued buying the bottled water ^^

When I was living in the Inland Empire in California, which has notoriously bad tap water, I would filter or buy bottled.

In LA, it's mostly fine.

A lot better really. No splashback, able to look for any weirdness in your poo. Don't need a lot of water. Unfortunately, if there isn't enough water in the "pool" it can be a bit messy to clean up.

Indeed. Either drink free horrible-tasting tap water or risk your health and be poisoned by perfectly-fine-tasting bottled water. You're are going to far though. I'm not being conned big time. That's why I said I do it every now and then. this was an isolated case in millions.

Austrian tap water is pretty much among the GOAT, indeed.

I tend to not drink tap water in any countries that have a warmer climate than Austria (Italy, Greece, Mediterranean countries in general)....
