Jasmine Green Tea: the subtle aroma adds much to what is already an excellent drink.

(I'm sure this surprises no one since Jasmine Green Tea is all I ever talk about.)

So it's finally the thread's aniversitea (god I am so clever) and what good would it be if we didn't try to get a few more people into the fold. So, without much fanfare:

The Public Anniversary Tea Giveaway!

The prizes:
2nd Place: $25.00 to Adagio.com.
1st. Place: $50.00 to Upton Tea.

How to enter: This contest is open to everyone on GAF. To enter, simply post in this thread with this image: http://i6.minus.com/iWrlCe8K8OIwV.png, the name of your favorite tea, and why you like it so much.

This contest will run for 1 week (from 4/12 to 4/19). You may only enter once. If you win, your only obligation will be to post what you've ordered and give a quick little review of one of the teas you get. I can't enforce this, but be cool man.

While the contest is geared towards Americans, appropriate accommodations will be made for people in other parts of the world. However, if the effort to award the prize proves too great, I do reserve the right to select someone in an easier-to-service area.

Good luck!

Jasmine Green Tea is such a good fallback choice. If I ever don't know what kind of tea I want to drink on a certain day I always go for the jasmine green. Tastes great mixing with a couple teaspoons of honey and a bit of sugar as well.

Does this include jasmine pouchong ? Have a tin of it from Harney and sons and its godly good.

Google Offers has their GotMatcha offer again. $25 for one of their daily packages and a lifetime (?) membership, which costs $180 when buying from their website. As for my favorite tea

I am partial to the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf's Watermelon Green Tea. It's light, subtle and has a tiny hint of pineapple to go with the watermelon flavor. I think it's a seasonal drink so whenever I see it on sale I always get a couple of tins (I'm down to my last one, about 7 more bags). Hopefully they'll restock them again.

it's hard picking an overall favorite but the one tea i always go back to outside of alishan oolong's is Kagoshima Shincha Yutaka Midori, or more specifically its shincha variant since it brings me more joy and excitement than any other harvest that is available through out the year. shincha for those unaware is the first month harvest of sencha and while the taste doesn't differ all that much, it has a far more fragrant smell which is more robust, giving off the same senses a freshly cut lawn of grass would bring. in a nutshell, shincha isn't just about celebrating the new harvest of green teas for the year, but it's also a celebration of various other tea crops which are being plucked and processed at this very moment and most importantly, it's a celebration of the best time of year... spring!

http://www.o-cha.com/Kagoshima-Shincha-Yutaka-Midori.html

highly recommended, especially since the yen is back to its 2007 conversion rate. it's only available while supplies last and once gone, you'll have to wait for the first normal flush which is sometime in may though the taste doesn't differ all that much. also you'll have to drink it within a month since it's more delicate and vulnerable to air and moisture than normal tea.

Earl Grey in the morning, Orange Dulce (Mighty Leaf) or other fruity not-quite tea in the afternoon.

Thanks for this. Long time reader and I have taken advantage of some of the deals posted.

Stopped in Davids Tea today and fell in love with it. The manager was super nice, really hope I can get a job here. Was at the location on Milk street and the staff couldn't have been nicer. I purchased 100 grams of birthday cake and 100 of the New Delhi. Both smell absolutely fantastic and can't wait to try them when I get home. Manager also gave me a cup to go on the house, so I tried the creme brûlée rooibos. Really smooth taste and delicious aroma. It won't replace tealuxe for me, now I just have more options. Man, I hope I get hired.

Their teapots and mugs are to die for. So adorable.

Wow, Thanks for this!

What is your favorite kinds? I think I am going with the Matcha Cacao one. I hope I made the right choice!

I went with the lemon ginger, I've never tried it before so hopefully it will be good. I only occasionally drink matcha so does anyone have any reviews of the quality of GotMatcha's teas?

Planning on heading out to buy some white tea today.

Anyone got any recommendations for types?

I live in Australia, so unfortunately no US based stores.

My favorite by far has been black dragon pearls. I love how smooth and rich it is. Goes great with a little raw honey or milk. Tried it in my adagio sampler, loved it but figure I could get s cheaper black tea, but it could not compare. So in December, I picked up a pound of it from teavana during their 75% off sale. Wish I had purchased more since it's running out now. I also love how it's in balls so you can count 2-3 balls instead of measuring with a teaspoon.

Yeah, I went with lemon ginger too; it sounds great (I love ginger). As for reviews, there are some customer reviews on Yelp, and Steepster.

Had some Yunnan Gold for the first time today (Bloc 11 in Somerville MA, and I think their tea is all from MEM Tea Imports). Super tasty, and I've found another black tea I like.

Got an interview at davids tea tomorrow at the store on Washington street. The manager said to dress casual, that they way to see my style, too bad all I have right now are dresses. Really hoping I get the job. Gonna also pick up a tin of that milk oolong. You guys made it sound amazing ~

I hope your interview went smoothly. I wish we had a bigger variety of tea shops here in central Florida. Thankfully, the coffee and tea buyer at the Whole Foods I work at is obsessed with building a tea empire.

This has been my daily tea for the last six months. Very good quality and I've gone through about a kilo in that time. Looks like they don't offer it anymore :-( Gonna have to find a replacement.

Good luck with your interview! The employees at Davids Tea in San Francisco always appear really happy where they work and they're very knowledgeable of their teas. I hope it's the same at the store you're interviewing at. :)

Got a spring catalog unexpectedly from Harney & Sons in the mail on thursday which reminded me to pick up some things from there I was eyeballing. Grabbed a tagalong of Tower of London - I'd been debating picking this up for a while because my stomach doesn't entirely agree with bergamot oil but the reviews made it sound absolutely delicious so $4 for a little sampler tin sounded like a good idea. Picked up a few others as gifts to try and introduce some to higher quality teas too.

Just wanted to drop in and give a big thank you to Morningbus for putting this contest on and for the gift card! I'll let you guys know what I end up buying.

The interview at davids tea (in boston) went well. Ill find out if I get a second interview on Wednesday. As for teas I had the milk oolong and their new Bollywood tea. Both were really good, though i preferred their bollywood. sweet with a hit of spoce chai. Picked up additional tons of the vanilla oolong and their Jessie's tea (rooibos) and will review them at a later date :).

Also congrats guy and thanks morningbus for the awesome contest. Ive never bought anything from those two companies, but i think i may order some this week. If I get the job, maybe ill have a contest in the future. :)

ya grab it from harney's? gonna grab a big collection of tea this monday on payday, this sounds really good

Honestly, the only brands I've tried and can read the names of are Trader Joe's pearls (which aren't all that authentic and overpriced) and TenRen. Most of the time I just raid my parents' stash since they have bags upon bags of teas they get as gifts.

There's this tea in Australia called Billy Tea. It's black tea infused with Kooloo red leaf. I love the smokey taste of this tea. It's just that I can't seem to find any information on Kooloo leaves.

Anyone got any ideas?

Best I can find based on rudimentary googling (#5 on my google search is this thread :O):
http://www.orientaldiscovery.com/16/html/2009101307363669-5621.html

This tea is said to have been drunk for 1500 years, which would date it to the sixth century. It is named for the town of Gulao (meaning very old) southwest of Guangzhou in Guangdong province.

Everything about this unusual green tea suggests its ancient origin-- its brew of bright brownish red color, its slightly burnt flavor with a sweet aftertaste. It is available on the market in China but, carried abroad by people from Guangdong, is more popular in Hongkong, Macao, and Australia.

Gulao Town is located in the Pearl River delta southwest of Guangzhou. There, in a low area between two mountains, the weather is warm and misty the year round--fine for tea growing.

After the leaves are plucked they are made into crude tea in the usual way through sun drying, firing, and rolling. Then they are given ten turns in a rolling drum heated to about 570 Fahrenheit (300 degrees centigrade). It's a tricky business to impart its burnt taste without scorching the leaves. They are done when they can be easily kneaded into a powder.

Has anyone ordered anything from Teavivre? I'm kinda interested since I saw great reviews on Steepster for their teas, especially the Bailin Gongfu. Free worldwide shipping helps too.

Speaking of Steepster, is it a reliable website for tea reviews?

I've ordered from them -- pu-erh sample pack, porcelain gaiwan, and some jasmine pearls. Great tea, my only complaint is that their free shipping to Canada took a month. Free samples nice as well, though I did not recieve the ones I asked for. Would order from them again.

I once checked the reviews of a white tea I was drinking and a person on there was giving reviews of it after X amount of resteeps. No lie: at the 7th resteep they said it had a light fecal taste. They did further resteeps.

My dad has been drinking green tea for a while. He keeps buying Lipton tea bags. I tell him not to, but I myself don't really know where to get good tea or how to brew it. This thread is awesome.

Why a press over a mesh ball though?

Thanks. I'm in Canada too, so I guess it'll take a while. Not in a hurry.
There's a harvest time for each tea. Some of them are from April 2013, others from April 2012. Should I wait for this year's batch for each tea, or does it have a minimal impact on the tea's quality?

It gives the tea room to expand. Every infuser I've used has had a habit of unlatching while the tea leaves are in it, so it just spills into the water. And I could have sworn they imparted a metallic flavor to the tea. Your mileage may vary, of course.

I have both the metal ball thing and tea bags, but I just like using bags better. They're easier to fill :p
