Teaching evolution to young Christian skeptics

In 2000, when the independent Thomas B. Fordham Foundation evaluated the evolution education standards of all 50 states, Florida was among 12 to receive a grade of F. (Kansas, which drew international attention in 1999 for deleting all mention of evolution and later embracing supernatural theories, received an F-minus.)

:lol

I laugh on the outside, but I'm crying on the inside :'(

Technically if they're following Ussher's chronology they'd believe the earth is approximately 6004 years old (his claim was based on a literal reading of the Bible the earth was formed in 4004 BC), rather than less than 6000 years old.

Read the NEW Testament, which is the foundation for Christianity. It's about redemption. I don't pretend to understand why the Old and New Testaments are conflicting, but that's how it goes. The Old Testament teaches that an adulteress should be stoned, but Jesus prevents this from happening. If you're going to try to find religious verses to support your facts, you're going to need to grab them off the New Testament.

No I don't see the POINT of Christianity. In my eyes, it has no point. But anyway, pick and choose away.

Morality is a system of right and wrong, good and bad. That's it. Providing this system is one of the primary ways humans have used religion for *ever*. And the question of good and evil lies at the *heart* of every religion.

I don't disagree with this post.

Religions may have the question at heart, but it does not mean their answers are useful or correct.

This is why deferring to religion on issues of morality is silly.

That's all my point (and I believe theBishop's point) was.

OK...but aren't you just missing the point? Do you, as a Christian, think your morality comes from the Bible? Do you only know what is good because you are told by the word of God in the bible? If this is the case (which all CHristians should believe if they are indeed Christain), how is that you pick and choose your morals from the Bible. By what facts are you able to CHOOSE your morals and reject others, when only the bible can inform you of your morals?

Why do head-hunters and canibals kill other people needlessly? They should have morality should they not? Or did natural selection decide that they were better off without morals?

Amino acids evolved into protein strings, and thereforth life sprouted.

Actually amino acids are the building blocks of proteins and DON'T evolve into them. But that's not obvious to someone ignorant of the sciences, of course.

Maybe you should also study up on some other possibilities for how life started. (hint: They don't all involve amino acids)

Hmm Azih. Morality is religions good and bad. Not believing in morality doesn't mean you don't believe in Good and Bad, it means you don't believe in religion's good and bad. I personally have an Amoral theory of Human's good and bad (ie. without religioun's morals.)

I'm suspecting we agree on this...just the way you wrote it sounded wrong to me...

Amino acids is the far more likely one is it not? I did not even know there were other possibilities, as my evolutionary biology professor only explored that one (and neglected to mention anything else). There's another point to say that evolution is still not sound enough to be declared a fact. The theory of evolution itself changes and evolves. Until it stabilizes, you can hardly declare it a fact. What's fact one day will not necessarily be fact the next.

Psalm 19:8 The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart;
The commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes;

So basically "trust these words, they are inspired by god to instruct you well"

They say nothing of believing in them literally, they only speak to the correctness of the morality that they will teach. It's an argument again disbelief in their value, not disbelief in the historical truth of it's narrative.

Evolution does not mean starting from the most basic building blocks. We could have all been brought into existence today, and evolution will still hold because it's a forward process.

They live in a different belief system and have different concepts of good and bad. This is the very point - our good and bad comes from both our evolutionary habbits for us to survive, and societiy's beliefs.

And Natural Selection and morals are mutually exclusive.

Yes, and our society sprouted from one with mostly Christian beliefs. Therefore, our morality sprouted from religion, in a sense. Or the other possibility is that religion sprouted from morality, but then you've a chicken and the egg type scenario.

You're talking about abiogenesis, not evolution. Evolution has nothing to do with how life began on this planet or anywhere else. Get it through your head.

There's another point to say that evolution is still not sound enough to be declared a fact. The theory of evolution itself changes and evolves. Until it stabilizes, you can hardly declare it a fact. What's fact one day will not necessarily be fact the next.

Evolution is fact. It happened. The changing elements of the theory of evolution involve how it happened, not if it happened. There's more concrete evidence for the process of evolution than there is for the existence of gravity. However, gravity, like evolution, is a fact of reality, and no matter how much "just a theory" rhetoric you spout, you'll still fall if you jump off a roof.

Yes, and our society sprouted from one with mostly Christian beliefs. Therefore, our morality sprouted from religion, in a sense. Or the other possibility is that religion sprouted from morality, but then you've a chicken and the egg type scenario.

More likely, morality provided a benefit to small communities of early humans, and thus individuals and groups with "good" morals thrived more than competitive "evil" ones. You don't need a cosmic zap to see how people helping one another is beneficial to all involved, especially in a more primitive and hostile environment.

1) Amino acids are one of the least likely components of very early life. Likely just lipids and some type of iterating compound(RNA?).

2) Theories are a collection of facts. Those facts likely NEVER change. New facts are incorporated into the theory that provide nuance and evolution is a very evolved theory. So, for all intents and purposes, it can be considered fact.

Dear Dr. Laura:

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the other specific laws and how to follow them:

When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness - Lev.15:19- 24. The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?

Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?

I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? - Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.

Your devoted fan,
Jim

which has nothing at all to do with religion and morality. A source of morality is one of religion's major functions. You might think it's an ass backwards stupid source of morality, but to say it isn't one at all is not valid in the slightest.

Religion is not an authority on morality. It may claim to be, but that is irrelevant.

Studying morality and *replacing* it are two completely different things. And it is the replacing it which is what I am disagreeing you on. Ethics is a branch of philosophy that is completely seperate from Science just like Metaphysics. This is the root of where my disagreement with you lies I think.

You're approaching "morality" from a biased perspective. It is likely the case that "moral" behavior is an evolved phenomenon. "Morality" is a set of actions we have evolved to do because our ancestors who didn't act in such a way did not survive. Suggesting that you can "replace" a set of evolved behaviors by decree of God (or some other authority) strikes me as ridiculous.

There is a huge amount of overlap and what is common to both is the consideration of questions that are *not falsifiable* and there is no evidence even possible. Which is what you derieded and dimissed in your post by saying Absence of evidence does not make questions irrelevant at all.

An example from the wiki on falsfiability:
On the other hand, a statement like "there exist parallel universes which cannot interact with our universe" is not falsifiable even in principle; there is no way to test whether such a universe does or does not exist.

Not falsifiable means not of scientific interest. But it remains of *human* interest. And thus we have philosophy and thus we have religion.

The remainder of your post is laughable. If there are parallel universes, we may at some point in the future be able to study them. However, your example asserts that the universes are separate and unknowable. So if we did prove the existence of parallel universes, those universes would not be the ones you are asserting by definition. So why ask the question? It is a joke.

Here's a similar assertion:
All purple Centaurs are vegetarians.
Prove me wrong!

Did you miss the part of the article where Campbell is a practicing Anglican who goes to church most sundays?

It's not a coincidence if even the few creationists who have a Ph.D would be hard pressed to correctly define evolution: they don't understand what evolution is. If they did, they would almost certainly believe it.
Human thought is far more diverse than that dude. For example someone who as Agnostic about *everything* wouldn't believe it, but they wouldn't believe anything, including their sense. A completely logical and consistent (though oddball) approach.

Well modern Christains like to pick and choose what they want to believe from the Bible, failing to see that doing so is incompatible with being Christain - since they then say that their morality comes from the bible, yet they still pick and choose their morals. Ie. Find a Christain who thinks women should be stoned to death for committing adultery, but men should only have a formal warning. None, but they're happy to say that Homosexuals are "sinners".

Christianity is the pick and choose religion.

I know it's fun to pick on Christianity, but right now you just have no clue what you're talking about. The part of the Bible that would suggest stoning of adulterous women as a suitable punishment is in the early Old Testament. These were laws of the Israelites or Hebrews. If anyone would still be expected to apply these laws today it would be Jews, not Christians. You see, Christianity as a religion is from Judaism, but it isn't Judaism. Christians read and discuss the Old Testament because they see it as a history of where their religion came from. It contains things like prophecy that they believe Christ fulfilled. That makes it important to Christians, but it isn't law to be followed by them. In fact, it can't be. Most Christians are not descended from Israel (Jews) and that simple fact alone means that the laws of the Old Testament don't apply to them.

Choose a better example.

It's like running for President, claiming to be a Christian, yet supporting late term Abortion or any form of Abortion.

Yea some idiot is about to run in here and say "lol Christians argue about taking life, but they war all the time". Actually God condemned war. When David wanted to build his temple to God, God told him he couldn't because he led a life of war (and committed adultery) and instead his son would be the one to build the temple.

The Old Testament teaches that an adulteress should be stoned, but Jesus prevents this from happening. If you're going to try to find religious verses to support your facts, you're going to need to grab them off the New Testament.

Christ fulfilled the old covenant:

Isaiah 42:1-4 “Behold! My Servant whom I uphold,
My Elect One in whom My soul delights!
I have put My Spirit upon Him;
He will bring forth justice to the Gentiles.
2 He will not cry out, nor raise His voice,
Nor cause His voice to be heard in the street.
3 A bruised reed He will not break,
And smoking flax He will not quench;
He will bring forth justice for truth.
4 He will not fail nor be discouraged,
Till He has established justice in the earth;
And the coastlands shall wait for His law.”

Matthew 12:17-21 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying:
18 “ Behold! My Servant whom I have chosen,
My Beloved in whom My soul is well pleased!
I will put My Spirit upon Him,
And He will declare justice to the Gentiles.
19 He will not quarrel nor cry out,
Nor will anyone hear His voice in the streets.
20 A bruised reed He will not break,
And smoking flax He will not quench,
Till He sends forth justice to victory;
21 And in His name Gentiles will trust.”

Luke 4:18-21 “ The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,[a]
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD.”

20 Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21 And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

And made a new one:

Hebrews 9:15 And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.

Hebrews 12:24 to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel.

Hebrews 8:6 But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises.

Hebrews 8:13 In that He says, “A new covenant, ” He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.

Hebrews 9:1-11 1 Then indeed, even the first covenant had ordinances of divine service and the earthly sanctuary. 2 For a tabernacle was prepared: the first part, in which was the lampstand, the table, and the showbread, which is called the sanctuary; 3 and behind the second veil, the part of the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of All, 4 which had the golden censer and the ark of the covenant overlaid on all sides with gold, in which were the golden pot that had the manna, Aaron’s rod that budded, and the tablets of the covenant; 5 and above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail.

6 Now when these things had been thus prepared, the priests always went into the first part of the tabernacle, performing the services. 7 But into the second part the high priest went alone once a year, not without blood, which he offered for himself and for the people’s sins committed in ignorance; 8 the Holy Spirit indicating this, that the way into the Holiest of All was not yet made manifest while the first tabernacle was still standing. 9 It was symbolic for the present time in which both gifts and sacrifices are offered which cannot make him who performed the service perfect in regard to the conscience— 10 concerned only with foods and drinks, various washings, and fleshly ordinances imposed until the time of reformation.

11 But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation.

Hebrews 10:15-17 15 But the Holy Spirit also witnesses to us; for after He had said before,
16 “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the LORD: I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them,” 17 then He adds, “Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”

Hebrews 12:18-24 18 For you have not come to the mountain that[a] may be touched and that burned with fire, and to blackness and darkness and tempest, 19 and the sound of a trumpet and the voice of words, so that those who heard it begged that the word should not be spoken to them anymore. 20 (For they could not endure what was commanded: “And if so much as a beast touches the mountain, it shall be stoned[c] or shot with an arrow.”[d] 21 And so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, “I am exceedingly afraid and trembling.”[e])
22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels, 23 to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect, 24 to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel.

People who quote the Old Testament Law to bash Christianity are as ignorant as those they label as such.

Not saying it shouldn't be taught to people who want to take biology. However, when it comes to biology, what's studied is micro-evolution.
This isn't true at all. First of all, microevolution and macroevolution are not terms used by any credible biologist. Second, "macroevolution" as Yuri Filipchenko put it, is a very important piece of the puzzle for understanding specifically what causes ecosystems to change, what effects industrialization can have on the faunal community, how ecosystems reach equilibrium, etc etc etc. The notion that "macroevolution" is only useful to an understanding of natural history is a false one.
When it comes to history, it becomes more of a sort of macro-evolution. Micro-evolution can be taught without offending anyone.
Luckily scientists are allowed to study in this country without fear of offending people. Science doesn't stop because people are offended, when it does, progress is hindered. If you recall, Galileo was locked up and shunned by the Catholic Church for daring to suggest that objects in our universe revolved around our sun. Whatever direction science takes, it's in a child's best academic interest to have a thorough understanding of the forefront of scientific theory and research. No one says that children in our nation have to believe the material, but to succeed academically in contemporary society they need to know the material.
Unlike some people in the thread, I oppose calling evolution, as it is taught, a fact. There's a difference in between believing bacteria evolve and thinking we all sprouted from amino acids. I've seen the mathematical odds of the latter happening, and while I still believe it, the odds are pretty damn low enough for me to realize it might not be true.
Really? And what are these mathematical odds?
Darwin realized this and even said so...he knew it was not an infallible theory.
Darwin hasn't been relevant to contemporary science since 1882.

You can't claim to be a Christian and deny scripture.
But he has. See my post above.

I love it.

"You can't deny scripture!!!"
"Then you believe the world is 6,000 years old."
"WTFOMGBBQ! That's stupid! Wut are you? Ignurnt?"

Well you can easily have a system of morality that has nothing to do with religions at all as you can believe in good and bad actions without being religous at all. Morality doesn't need to be religously informed.

Amoral means believing there *is* no good and bad, that is also logically seperate from religion. I could imagine an amoral and deeply religious person, but it would be a pretty weird religion.

So why even teach anything from Leviticus in churches? Why have my Christian friends who try to tell me that certain things are wrong based on levitical scripture? You can't use this argument because I have been in enough churches to know that levitical law is still a pick and choose world where Christians choose which levitical laws can and can't be used against themselves and other people.

A question in regards to the apologetic evolutionary teaching, why must science be sensitive to any religion in terms of study?

Dude, I'm a christian. Except I'm a christian that's READ THE BIBLE.

Unless you imply some sort of logic stating the first 7 days were not days at all (in which case why is that open to interpretation and the rest not?) and you add up the days it comes to 6,000 years. Prove me wrong. Just try.

I'm just going to go out on a limb here and address something you've said so here goes:

In Genesis 1:3-5 God creates the Light and Darkness, separates them from one another and calls them Day and Night. This is referred to as the First Day.

It was NOT until the 4th day that God created the Sun and the Moon as the Greater and Lesser lights which to govern the seasons, days, nights, and years.

From a "Creationist" standpoint it can be perceived that God may have determined the "days" upon which he formed the Heavens, Earth, and everything afterward from something more than just the Sun and a 24 hour period. To a being that is believed to be infinite it is not conceivable to think that he would be governed by the same rules and measures of time that we mortals are confined too.

As for Evolution? It does not explicitly state that "There is No God" but merely omits the possibility of one by not mentioning him in the process of life. This reason, I believe, is why so many Atheists and anti-religious people try to use science as a means of trying to destroy God or, at the very least, the thought or belief in God.

This thread would make a good go-to page for the definition of ignorance. I don't know if I've ever face palmed as much.

Sorry then, I have my facts and theories mixed up. Blame it on my evolution professor, as he began simply with the whole amino acids thing and went on to evolution. He never spoke a work about abiogenesis.

There are absolutely bad teachers out there. Unfortunately this is a large part of why kids never fully grasp what abiogenesis, evolution, and other scientific theories are and what they mean, and end up with twisted viewpoints like yours. I don't mean it as an insult, because it's not your fault. Your science teachers have failed you, in terms of instruction and in terms of instilling an interest in scientific knowledge in you and almost certainly many of your classmates.

This is one of the big, big reasons the educational system in this country needs a huge revamp.

You can't claim to be a Christian and deny scripture.

It's like running for President, claiming to be a Christian, yet supporting late term Abortion or any form of Abortion.

Except that this prohibition against abortion has zero support in the Bible. Did you know that? Did you know that the Southern Baptists originally supported and approved of Roe v. Wade?

Now don't cite me this "I knew you before you were born." crap. That could just be an expression for "I've known you a long time." It is in no way any kind of prohibition of abortion. If God really wanted to outlaw abortion don't you think he could have said "Abortion should be illegal."

More accurately, in the Gospels Christ flat out says "Screw all that other stuff, just love thy neighbor and believe in me." That's the "New" part of "New Testament." The Old Testament is part of the Christian Bible mainly to provide backstory and context for the story of Jesus.

Not strictly true. Those two commandments are provided in response to the question of which laws are most important, and it's pretty clearly stated that the other laws are based on these two - if you love both God and your neighbour, then you're automatically going to stick the other stuff. Hence "on these two commandments hang all the law, and the prophets".
