Tearaway Unfolded |OT|

So forgive me if this was mentioned, as I don't want to spoil anything about the game, but for those that have played the Vita version, how does this game fare? One of the things that interested me about the Vita version is all the unique functions of the machine were put to good use. Even if you could argue that it's all very gimmicky stuff, it looked like MM were making a game very unique to the Vita. I ALMOST bought a Vita just for Tearaway, but ultimately it was just too much to put hundreds of dollars for a system that would not get much use. So anyway, did they cheese all the Vita specific functions? Do you feel the game is better off or worse for it?

Now comes the 1 million dollars question : I played and enjoyed Tearaway on Vita (played it twice for the platinium I think) and I really want to jump in it again. Should I buy this new version or should I just play it on Vita again ? Are the new features/levels good enough compared to their Vita counterparts ? What is your biggest disappointment so far ? I really don't care if there isn't much new content, just need to know the quality of it (and if I replay it on Vita I won't have new content anyway).

Well, a read through of the thread would tell you people are generally loving it - I think almost more than most of us were expecting. MM had sold this as sort of a partial redux but it's much closer to a full blown remake/reimagining of the original - it feels 60-70% new, and even the old stuff is re-worked. Plus visually it is just fucking stunning on a larger canvas. All the gameplay elements work as well as in the original, they're just different - the only downside is the controllable camera is a bit wonkier.

Should you just replay it on Vita? Ab. Solutely. Not. This is probably as close to a sequel as we'll ever get, and honestly, it's pretty close to that given everything that's new. If you love Tearaway, support this project, at full price.

Any reason to get the original now in addition to playing this in the future?

Or does this new release make the original pointless.

No definitely not - almost none of the original's mechanics are possible or present here, so the Vita game is a completely different experience.

I platinumed the Vita version easily enough, but for the life of me, I cannot find 5 missing pieces of confetti in Maypole Fields using the bookmark select.

Pig, plane, gopher holes, hidden area, I've checked them all. Have everything else there and am stuck at 99%.

Also, the game is really best appreciated with a PS camera.

Probably during the pig section, when you get to the dark area there is a ledge you can drop down to (first one). In the bottom right are two flowers, small and large. You probably need to shine your light on the small flower. I went insane looking for that.

I played the demo and didn't like it at all.

Then I decided that after 60 hours of the boring lifeless slog that is MGSV, that it probably deserves a legitimate shot and the style is creative and warm which is what I need right now. So I bought it anyway.

After playing this, it feels like the Vita original was not doing the game justice. The art style was "cool" on the Vita but it is absolutely stunning on PS4. 1080p60 with truly pristine IQ, I've not seen any retail PS4 game that looks anywhere near as clean as this. Pretty much every "gimmick" in the game has been re-worked, and every level using said gimmicks have changed as well. I played the Vita game just this past December (i.e., less than a year), and playing through Unfolded right now and it feels like a whole new experience, not merely a "remastered" or "ported" one.

Thanks for your answer, I'm sold. I've quickly read to the topic (and reviews) but I couldn't find this specific answer. Of course the game is great on PS4 too, but how worth it is for Vita fans is another question.

I loved the Vita version too, but playing at 60FPS on a big screen with new mechanics and additional content is great. You can now also use Vita/Tablet as companion app for the design work too or import already taken photos.

Just out of interest I just submitted the Amazon price to bespoke offers and they have come back with £23.04

8GuL1aB.jpg

Which if you go via www.topcashback.com they are currently offering 14% cashback on Bespoke Offers beatmyprice purchases making it £19.81!! (if you want a referral link just shout, won't post on here)

I caved and picked up the game. I couldn't resist the pull. And my goodness is it worth it. I adored Tearaway on Vita and I really can't imagine a better outcome of a reimagining. The game presents a new story which revels in the quirkiness of the first game to an even greater degree, and makes everything feel a little fresh. There are definitely sections I recognise and remember, but they serve as a sort of nostalgic reminder of the Vita game to me - almost like hearing a new twist on a children's story you've heard before. It really is an endlessly charming and very-well put-together package.

And it's utterly gorgeous, to boot:

The image quality is crystal-clear and looks fantastic. I'm still impressed, even after platinum on Vita, by the sheer depth in the artstyle of the world of Tearaway. It really is a beautiful game.

That said, I reallllly wish I'd been able to jump just a little earlier. Haha. The fact I've played some of it before just made me want to leap
and roll and use the accordion
everywhere. Hopefully that's not too far off but I really am enjoying the game. It's really sad that it seems to be failing to get much buzz. If you like Tearaway, or even just the idea of a bright and cheery mascot platformer in 2015, you should definitely be taking a look.

I finished the game yesterday (already played the vita version before) and was left with similar feelings as Puppeteer. I loved the total package but found the gameplay to be the weaker link in an otherwise dazzling show.

Presentation wise (audio, soundtrack, visuals, cast of characters, atmosphere, menu, UI, image quality,...), it's easily one of my favourite games ever (similar to Puppeteer). It looks and sounds fantastic, fresh, imaginative and fun. And at the end, i couldn't help but feel that this game has a heart.

However, gameplay wise, there were issues. The camera struggled at times (esp. the guided camera versus the free camera), getting in the way of gameplay, making the screen go black,... Also, the game dragged on a bit in the later stages and some parts could have been omitted entirely since they were just a rehash of other parts in a different setting (e.g. the desert section). I also felt that the story lost some of it's original appeal due to the various story "twists" throughout.

There was too much start/stop gameplay: cutscene/dialogue, perform small task, cutscene/dialogue, walk a few steps, cutscene/camera panning, overview of area, a bit of platforming,... The side quests were not varied enough and fighting the scraps became quite repetitive after a while. The touchpad felt too small for drawing (it was easier on the bigger Vita screen) and the absence of a camera made the game feel less personal than on Vita.

On the positive side, most of the DS4 mechanics worked really well and there were some genuinely interesting and clever gameplay ideas in there. At one point, in a specific rolling area, it felt like i was playing Marble Madness and wished it lasted longer. Gameplay wise, there is definately a solid puzzle/platform game hidden in there but overall, i felt that these parts were too short in between every other aspect that the developer crammed in there (i'm again referring to the start/stop feeling).

In conclusion, i'd say it's a typical Media Molecule game where the create/share aspect has an equal amount of importance as the typical "hardcore" gameplay that most games have. It's less prominent than in LBP but it's still there throughout the game. It's also a game aimed at all ages, hence the lack of any real difficulty. If those things don't bother you, then it's a game that deserves to be discovered and cherised by YOU :)

Finished it today.

Just as with the Vita release - which I bought day one - the atmosphere, art direction, and soundtrack were all stellar. It's amazing how well the mechanics adapted to the Dualshock 4. Regardless of what project they are working on, Media Molecule - and Tarsier - continue to provide unique scenarios and gameplay mechanics that fully utilized the Vita, the Dualshock 4, and the Camera.

While a few locales were the same, as were some of the objectives and main story points, much of the experience felt different due to the varied mechanics. In the places it strayed from the original, like the Scrap hideout, it strayed beautifully. Ultimately it would have been great to get a full out sequel with all new content, but I'm happy with this release, happy I got to get another glimpse into that beautiful world, and happy more people get to experience it's whimsy.

I did run into a fair share of small bugs and freezes - though that could be due to the firmware beta - and the camera doesn't always cooperate, but they hardly detract from the joyous experience.

Just as with the original, I absolutely love how it tasks you with creating and shaping the world. I spend a lot of time at the craft desk. It really pays off throughout the experience. I did feel like it was easier to create on the Vita since the DS4's touch pad is a bit small, but the crudeness of creations kind of makes them more intimate.

At the end, it's the entire projects intimacy that really leaves you warm and fuzzy.

Also, elated to see all the comparisons to Puppeteer and its praises. That's another one I was there day one for that I absolutely loved for its creative whimsy. Franchises like these may not sell all that well, but I really hope Sony continues to see the value in them, because they're the main reason I play video games.

Thanks for the replies. I just picked this baby up. I thought I might wait until it dropped in price but I figured these are the kinds of games I want to support. I hope it does well. After putting about 80 hours into MGSV and with still a ways to go, I'm definitely gonna take a break and refresh my brain with this neat little game :)

Can someone explain to me how I can actually get back to where I was in the story after replaying an earlier chapter?
I haven't tried myself but there should be a chapter marked with a badge, it's the one you can pick up from. Also when you quit and come back, it supposedly sends you back to your furthest checkpoint - I've beaten the game and I'm always sent to the pre-credits scene.

Hmm I'm not seeing it. It's just strange because I just found the
pumpkin in the attic and put him on his body
then replayed maypole fields. Now the
scarecrow body is missing the head
and I went to replay the store level and the pumpkin wasn't there. So I'm a bit frustrated it feels like I'm missing something.

Here's how the checkpoint should look in the chapter selection, cropped to avoid spoilers. It's the only chapter that'll show the continue option.

If you can't see it, you're gonna have to replay the entire
barn
chapter to get
the pumpkin head
back again.

Great thanks for the help. I'll double check. The time I replayed the store was immediately after finishing the store so I could get the gopher which may explain why the
pumpkin
wasn't there. Then I did maypole fields, so now I must have to go back thru the store. Seems like I may just beat the game then replay chapters because that seems like a bit of a hassle.

Those of you that have played the vita version and are saying the DS4 touchpad isn't as good for drawing - did you try using the vita as a second screen?

I used the iPad PlayStation app once and you get a lot more space, but it disconnects quite quickly when you're not using it, and the drawing sections are relatively few and far between, so I ended up not bothering and just sticking with the touchpad. While small, it has surprisingly good resolution and I was pretty happy with it for basic designs.

Should have used the Vita as a second screen for creation, don't let it go to waste. Just hit up Remote Play and then Second Screen.

I caved the other night and ordered this, despite the fact my finances are pretty dire right now. The Vita version is definitely in my top 20 favourite games list so how could I possibly resist? Should be starting it tonight hopefully.

Also, woah @ somebody above saying MGSV is a boring slog. I haven't played it myself, but I assumed everybody loved the game?

Well, I've bitten the bullet on this. I really enjoyed the original on Vita - probably one of my favourite games on the system.

I can't wait to get stuck into this on a big telly, I bet it's going to look beautiful.

My only concern is that I don't own a PS4 camera - will that impact the experience at all?

Has anyone figured out how to do the Iconic trophy? I've drawn a lot of trophies (okay they were poorly drawn) but it hasn't popped.

I played the demo and didn't like it at all.

Then I decided that after 60 hours of the boring lifeless slog that is MGSV, that it probably deserves a legitimate shot and the style is creative and warm which is what I need right now. So I bought it anyway.

Tearaway demo bad... MGS5 boring slog... Jurassic World avatar... Have you considered that maybe you just have poor taste? :)

To the people who have thoroughly played both, Tearaway and Tearaway Unfolded, I'm running a handheld platformer thread, where I categorize handheld platformers as either completely different from their console counterparts, basically the same but with some extra content (which is because usually handheld versions come later), or the same or subsumed by the console version. Could you maybe help me classifying the differences wrt Tearaway?

Not played completely but game mechanics that have changed so far are

No longer able to put fingers through the screen (back touch pad VITA)
Use of the light bar on DS4 to attract scraps and burn through paper (PS4)
Use touchpad on DS4 to change wind and blow paper/scraps away leaving new paths (PS4) / Previously on vita you would swipe them away on the screen.
Use touchpad to design items/or use companion app (Mobile/Tablet/Vita) (PS4)
Press down on touchpad to activate drums, previously tap read touchpad (PS4)

Thank you, but could you maybe also say something about the level designs? The list is intended to help people to decide whether to buy a handheld game of a series in addition to the console game or not.

The lack of posts in this topic make me a bit sad, but I haven't played the game yet so can't really add anything meaningful. I've nearly finished Dying Light so I may start on this next.

I'd love to know this. The only thing I could think of is the game prompts you to draw a trophy, but I've not beaten the game yet to say whether or not. My progress is slow as I've been going back and completing a level 100% before moving on to the next.

I just popped over to Playstationtrophies and saw this as a reply:
"Later in the game you will be asked to make a trophy as one of the side missions for the blue presents, so you can wait until that point to make one."

Tearaway on Vita is one of my legitimate GsOAT (don't have a PS4 yet, but Unfolded would have been a day 1 purchase if I did). How can this happen? Do people really hate fun this much? Poor Media Molecule, and poor Sony for constantly funding these boundary pushing studios making some of the most innovative and fun games, and not being rewarded. Dreams is equally doomed, no doubt.

Ah thank you! I was wondering whether that was the solution but I was so eager to try and get it out of the way because I usually try and get rid of easy misc trophies first.

The VAST majority of gamers don't actively seek out games to play, they just buy whatever is advertised and well received. Sony has done virtually nothing whatsoever to ensure this game has even passable sales, so it's sadly very predictable that it's a commercial flop.

Hopefully it sells enough to break even, but without a little push from the marketing team it's never going to get anywhere substantial.

Welp, so much for this IP getting a second chance. I suggest the OT title should be Less Popular than

You know... a critically successful yet commercially lackluster title seems like a good fit for a PS+ title down the road. Not saying people shouldn't buy this-- I did and think it's a fantastically original game-- but this seems like a safe addition to the Plus library maybe sometime next year.

What happened is bad pricing. The retail price for this game in Europe is insane. Most stores seem to be selling it for 65-75 Euro. No joke. That's up to $85 in USD.

Now, this sucks, but if other games were doing the same people would have to suck it up and wait for sales. Yet, in reality, most other new games are 60 Euro. MGSV, Mad Max, Until Dawn, etc. All are 60 at retail.

I love the hell out of Tearaway but you are never going to convince people to check it out when the price is so damned high. I was planning to buy it day 1 but after seeing the price, I passed over it and will just buy the U.S. Disc version when I visit in Dec.

Price isn't everything but this is a niche game. You cannot price games like this at such a high price point and expect good sales. Most people are going to thumb their noses at 75€ for a game unless it's something they REALLY want.

I'm in two minds about picking this up. On the one hand I literally only just beat the Vita version a few weeks ago so I don't know if I'm ready to play it again, but on the other I really want to support this IP as I absolutely loved the Vita version. I want to see this series get some more recognition and future support.

That's insane. Even the UK pricing keeps somewhat in step with the US pricing but I totally agree, that Euro price is terrible.

but a terrible game, so boring.

The pricing issue is weird. In my country the game sells for 49€, even at the shops that are known to be very expensive game wise. In France, Amazon sells it at 43€, which is very close to the digital price. The Netherlands seems to sell it at 49€ aswell. So the high price in e.g. Germany seems like an exception rather than a rule. It is weird though that prices vary so much on this title (and digital being far cheaper than retail for once).

I firmly believe that neither price nor lack of marketing is an issue. It's been proven quite often in the last years that there just isn't a market for this type of games anymore.

Finished this earlier and am still a bit shocked that it's even better than the original. The new stuff, especially the Dualshock 4 specific things, are great and it looks absolutely amazing on a big screen. Looks like Tearaway is going to be on my GOTY list once again.

I finished the game with 100% collectibles a few days ago. I always wanted to play the Vita version but never owned the system. Overall, I thought the aesthetics and charm were better than the actual game. That's not to say it's a bad game. I especially liked the final act with all the platforming. The bits where you make costume pieces and props would have been a bit more enjoyable if I was more creative, but it's surprising how good some of my creations looked in regards to the rest of the game. Aside from a few small issues like the misplaced gophers I had an enjoyable time.

I've been reading impressions, and I'm curious to know what people who already played the Vita version think. Is this the definitive version of Tearaway? I've played the Vita version and I really liked it, but some reviews make it seem like it doesn't have the same charm as the original.

exactly, and this 100% media molecule and not sony.
they tried to pull the same shit with little big planet 3, charge a fortune for a broken unplayable mess which still doesn't work properly after loads of patches. They tried to charge more than far cry 4 and GTAV.

The price for tearaway is a joke and i'm sure the sticker on the box saying from the makers of little big planet will put off lots of pissed off parents who bought LBP3 for their kids, for a crazy price, only to discover the game was broken.

Seriously i'm amazed it's sold as well as it has done, everyone will just wait and get it on ps+ for free, this it what happens when you don't even bother fix your last game(LBP3), release dlc and still charge for it even though the main game that everyone paid for is still a glitchy broken mess. even Ubisoft isn't that bad to it's fans.
The only adverts out for tearaway keep reminding people that it's by the same developers as little big planet, which to me is a huge mistake when they pissed off so many people with LBP3.

It's sad to see especially when tearaways artistic talent and creativity deserves a wider audience, but they didn't do themselves any favours in terms of pricing and all the problems with LBP3.

I've got both games on day 1, 100%'d on Vita. This is the definitive version; bigger, (slightly) better and isn't missing anything from the original.

The thing is, if you've already played the Vita version most of the novelty is lost and there'll be no surprises. There are a few new stages, some remade sections and most of it controls differently, but in the end I felt double dipping wasn't really worth it.

Or maybe I'm just grumpy because collectible hunting wore me out this time around.
