Teddman reveals Revolution controller details!

Wow the Nintendo marketing guys really did a number on you people. "It's called the REVOLUTION which means it will be REVOLUTIONARY. It will change the way we comprehend the nature of what a video game is and how it's played. Soon we'll have to renumber the year system. The year the Revolution gets released it will be year 1 AR (after the revolution)!!" Seriously guys, first MEGATON and now the Revolution's controller. When will it end?

That's when Nintendo's supposed to have the Revolution full unveiling, as far as I remember. Isn't that what Matt said, and aren't there a bunch of interviews lined up in Kyoto for it end of next month?

The point remains that internet fanboys constantly hype things to illogically astronomical levels. Whoever said the Revolution's controller would have a touch screen, gyroscopes, play every videogame known to man, would cure cancer, let you have sex with it, etc.? It seems like a few details were taken out of context and then sent through the internet fanboy hype machine.
 
The Revolution is probably mostly philosophycal. There must be something different about it but I think in the end they just wanted to symbolize that they are chasing something other than technology with it. Also the mistery was a great way to make themselves present in the pre-next gen debacle without having to give away too much. Wether that's a good strategy or not remains to be seen.

Also, a revolution isn't a revolution if others don't follow your lead. So they must have been pretty confident about it to codename it that.

And yet Iwata is quoted saying that the Revolution's graphics will look like those already performed on the PS3 and Xbox360.

You don't team up with IBM and ATi to make a weak system. You don't increase R&D by 39 percent to make a weak system. You don't frickin' call your system "REVOLUTION" to make it weak.

Graphical power is just an entry point, not the end of all ends.
 
It's like MS trying to defend the name Xbox 360 as a philosophical choice with all that bullshit like "ring of light" and "it's called 360 because it centers around the user" instead of the real reason which was for marketing because if you called it Xbox 2 it would sound inferior to PS3.

Junior makes sense! If only everyone else listened.

I can't wait to see how much power ATi and IBM are able to put into the Revolution's small footprint. ATi's been doing exciting things on the mobile side, so I suspect Revolution will not suffer as significantly as others predict.
 
Maybe the interface are the games itself? Nighttrain(gasp!) did say an interface doesn't necessarily mean the controller itself.


If they did increase their R&D by 39% and said the graphics will still be very powerful, but what we're doing with it will be different could be true.

That's true. I'm sure Nintendo is very serious about Revolution, just as much as they were with DS if not more, it just won't be as powerful as the other two but I'm sure it will be pretty capable. Their problem right now is the lead the other two are getting with third parties and public perception in general, it's no good having a great product if it's too late, there's more to the console race than just having a great product.

Where does this come from?!?!

ATI is king when it comes to low power consumption video cards for their mobile lineup. I'm actually sick of repeatedly posting this link: http://ati.com/products/mobile.html since I know that it'll be overlooked every time.
 
I have a feeling that Nintendo did have more to show at E3, but didn't. I think Sony really shocked people, even if most were just deemed as "tech demos" the damage was done and now the system is considered to be god-like in power. Their unveiling was certainly more effective than MS with the MTV X-BOX 360 deal. So maybe Nintendo knew they couldn't top that (at this point) so they decided to do a quick throw together show. Not saying they were dropkicked back to the drawing boards, just that maybe whatever they wanted to show they didn't think would be good enough.

Not saying that Revolution will suddenly now be more powerful than PS3...but whatever Nintendo shows off on the hardware first HAS to impress 'cos they didn't show anything at E3 and they have to give a comparable answer to the competition to be taken seriously.

As far as the controller goes...maybe when they say interface they mean MORE than just the controller afterall? Who the hell knows anymore? I know this is rediculous and I won't get a straight answer, but this is what I e-mailed Nintendo.com earlier:

Hello. My name is Garrison Andrew Kane and I've been very keen on the Nintendo Revolution. I want to know everything, but I know I'm not gonna get it until Nintendo is ready to unveil. However, I'd like to ask a few things for myself...nothing that's going to reveal Nintendo's master plan or anything, just enough to keep me from going insane due to lack of information.

1) Why are the Revolution controllers WiFi? Won't that make them more expensive and more power consuming? WaveBird wireless (like with the GCN) is pretty good IMO, why the move to something like WiFi? Do the Revolution controllers require heavier communication with the Revolution system itself and/or is this because Nintendo wants the controllers to have a wider range than the current GCN WaveBird's do?

2) Can the Revolution controller be used to play GCN games? I ask because Nintendo has often stated that (thanks to the downloading of retro games to the Revolution) that the controller must be able to play NES, SNES & N64 games. But what about GCN games? Yes there's GCN controller ports on the Revolution deck, but why can't the Revolution's controller play GCN games...any specific reason why not?

3) Reggie keeps saying in interviews that developers are "stoked" about the Revolution controller being able to play NES, SNES & N64 games and that they're excited about that type of "configuration"??? This is a big "?" to me because the GCN controller can *already* play NES, SNES & N64 games, so why is it a big deal that the Revolution can when the GCN already can? And why would such an ability excite developers of current games. By "configuration", did Reggie mean it's a configurable controller? This would make sense to it being compared to the NDS, it's ability to play games from multiple systems as well as developers being excited about it's abilities as well...plus a configurable controller WOULD be a Revolution. Is that why Reggie mentions the backwords compatibility together with why developers are happy with the controller?

4) I read somewhere that Nintendo responded boldly back to someone about the Revolution using 3D. Usually Nintendo gives a non-answer or a "we don't comment on rumors" answer, but why a bold-face NO to using 3D glasses? Maybe this wasn't a true responce from Nintendo, but the reason I ask is because there have been rumors of Nintendo using 3D glasses (not VR goggles...those are too unbelievable in my opinion) for more gaming immersion. Nintendo keeps refering to interface, often times not trying to call the interface the controller...which suggests the Revolution is more than just the controller. Is it possible the Revolution could use 3D glasses for some games and that is what is meant by a better interface beyond just the controller?

Yeah. King Dea. Says the controller will have a heat/cool system, weight enforced resistance force feedback and a gyro sensor. Who knows anymore???
 
I emailed Nintendo about Resident Evil 5, and the guy said to expect some big news regarding "Resident Evil and other third-party games" by the end of the year.

Here's the thing that pisses me off. You have jaded bitches roaming these boards, and many like these, who's whole goal in life, is to try and piss off Nintendo fans. Why? Who the fuck knows, and frankly I don't care anymore.

They take tiny snippets of things Nintendo said, or try and use the DS, and it's crap hardware as a basis for the Revolution(Not to mention the systems size) They often overlook the HUGE potential for the dual screens(Touch) and focus on the power, becuase it's what they pieces of crap do. Bitch, piss, and moan about Nintendo.

Give it a rest already. WE KNOW YOU LOVE THE 360/PS3. Buy it, and be happy with the SAME GAMES, with better graphics. over 20 years of playing the same game, with prettier graphics is enough for ME. That's why I am excited, and hope that Nintendo does something as different, and as bold as what they did with the DS.

Regarding graphics, here's a quote from the latest EGM in an interview with Satoru Iwata -

EGM: Some people are saying Nintendo has given up trying to lead technologically and is focused on innovation.

Satoru Iwata: I don't think the Revolution's [graphics] will be inferior in any fasion to Xbox 360 or PS3. Even if you look at Zelda on GameCube--I don't think that looks inferior to what [the competition] is touting as "next generation" visuals. But we think there are more important things for now than making the system [work with] a high-definition television. The majority of people won't be playing our system with an HDTV, [though] with the Revolution, 480p [resolution] will be standard. We are not making light of graphics and technology--we are trying to make the best-balanced machine that will appeal to the most people.

I'm not a techie by any means, but Spike is pointing out these mobile graphics cards that can output true high defintion. That being the case, the Revolution may indeed be capable of displaying high definition graphics. Iwata doesn't rule it out completely, he just says they aren't concentrating on it and that it will indeed support 480p as the standard. At least that's a digital/progressive output, so hopefully it will put some people who were concerned about that at ease.

As for Teddmans news about the controller, I'm quite happy that if what he saw was a prototype for the Revolutions controller, it will still be compatible with the games on Xbox 360 and PS3. What I'm more excited about though is the fact that developers actually have their hands on some SDKs. Right now, my hope is that Revolution is the home of third party exclusives. I can deal with scenarios like Viewtiful Joe or RE4 where it gets ported, but at least it will be created with Revolution in mind. I hope we start seeing some announcements about games soon though. It still doesn't bode well that games are being announced for 360 and PS3.

Edit - I forgot to mention that the interview also states that Revolutions controller has been designed to be able to play standard games as well. In other words, there's no reason a game made for 360 or PS3 would be alienated from Revolution due to controls.

You can tell Nintendo dropped the ball with Gamecube because before Gamecube came out people were speculating on how many of the big third party games like MGS2 and Soul Calibur 2 it would get and how much better Nintendo would do compared to Sony with a disc based system. Now everyone knows Rev will be a distant last in the US and are questioning whether its graphics will even be almost as good as X360 and PS3. Here's my prediction:Rev will be so bad it will be Nintendo's last console.

I think what he meant was that Revolutions controller will able to play games like RE5 and NFS:MW. They probably have dev kits out there with a standard "unRevolutionized" controller so developers can start making games. This is a good thing because Revolution may actually see some ports of whats coming out on 360 and PS3 (ie. NFS:MW, Madden, Ghost Recon, you get the idea). I'm sure they know their ideas would be stolen if the gave developers the full controller, so after the system is released, we'll start seeing more third party games take advantage of it's features.

Well, probably early games on Revolution from 3RD parties will be multiplatform ports (developing 1 game for 3 different platforms can be profitable if done correctly) sooo...it probably means Nintendo wants to have accomedating controls for conventional games, as early on, the games they'll probably get will be ports that require "normal" controls.

I like the Iwata comment about selling the Revolution so it becomes a standerd. That's the TRUE way to get 3RD party support...by actually creating a large enough userbase so that 3RD parties actually want to make games for it.

If anything these new interviews do it's to assure us that the graphics & controller should be compatible enough for 3RD parties to port their X-BOX 360 & PS3 games to Revolution.

Yes, it's been reassuring and much needed. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that most of the games being made for PS3 and 360 will hit Rev as well. Better support for racers, fps and rpgs would be a good start.
