Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990) back in theaters starting today 8/14 until 8/21 for the 35th anniversary

I've never seen it in theaters so this is a must for me. Planning on getting Saturday afternoon tickets with my kid.

I like the movie as a comic adaptation and a Jim Henson showcase, but it's also a special movie on a personal level as it was a favorite for me to watch with a close friend who is no longer here.

There were rumors that this would be the new 4k scan that Arrow will be releasing, but apparently they just got their hands on the scan so that is probably not the case.

I hope it draws in at least a semi decent crowd. It'd be cool to see younger kids there. They NEED darker, dramatic stuff for kids these days veiled under the guise of your friendly neighborhood turtles or whatever.

I still remember being in a weird state of shock when I left the theater. All I knew were the toys and the cartoon. Here I had heard them swear, Raph almost dies, there's that really emotional moment at the campfire..

And Judith Hoag was pretty alright back then :messenger_smirking:

Just waiting eagerly on that UK pre-order. I watched the first film with my dad at eight years old at the cinema.

Celebrate Happy Birthday GIF by PBS KIDS

So good, it was played twice in the movie.

And let's not forget...

Cowabunga! Now release the first movie separately on 4k disc.

My kids have seen this, I have lived it, and I think I would like to see it in the theater again. Best adaptation of the Turtles on film.

Loved this as a kid. I wore the vhs out. Might treat myself and see this in the theater again. I wish the 4k was just the first film. Those other two are bad and awful

Motherfucker, I'm about to kiss you. I've wanted that first track on my playlist for a long time, and you provided.

Maybe I'll spare you the kiss and just say thanks......maybe.

I have never heard of Arrow video, but that looks like a cool set and 4k transfer. Pre-ordered.
Arrow is more of a specialty label like Criterion. They have the best reputation for quality releases of all labels/studios so you have nothing to worry about. I was hoping they would release the first movie separately, but i need that deluxe box with the original poster art so i pre-ordered too.

I wanna hear reactions to scenes like this

Still holds up. Fucking classic. I love Josh Pais's voice man. Just unique as hell

$69 dollars for the first film in 4K, $0.99 for the other two :P

I don't totally hate the second one, but damn was it disappointing. Even as a wee lad coming out of the theater, i was so mad. I'm not sure i even finished the third because i hated it so much, but i'll give it a chance when my set comes in.

amazing classic, and still holds up today with great themes.

I never seen the Michael Bay ones.
They have some value just in seeing these MONSTROUS GORILLA TURTLES absolutely wrecking shit. I dont particularly care for them but its an interesting take on the idea. The Bay style humor and shot composition doesnt really work well though.

I don't see folks talk much about the 2007(ish) cg movie with the statue guys but I liked that one. The newest one I didn't like much, the art direction alone was off putting.

Planning on going tomorrow, can't wait

Amazing, this was a rare perfect adaptation.

It's hard to even convey how difficult the task was of taking that comic/cartoon franchise and actually making a movie that works. The Jim Henson puppetry, the look of New York and the sewers, the very grounded and physical feeling of the non-CGI approach to all of it, the allowance of quieter moments like the farmhouse section of the film, it was all handled so well.

Got my tickets for 9:40 tonight. Seriously excited :messenger_tears_of_joy:

What a seminal childhood movie for me. Woudn't be surprised if I tear up like a bitch at some point.

Got my tickets. Are they showing a restored version or just the dvd
It had better be something better than DVD! Even 4K is "low res" compared to film, right? I thought 35mm film was basically 8K resolution.

I just hope this isn't one of those AI overprocessed zero grain monstrosities. Cameron hopefully is alone in wanting old film to try to replicate the textureless plasticky digital look. AI artifacts make it even worse.

I have found a Twitter that keeps dropping 35mm prints of films. And I have been enamored. There are even some open matte ones where you see the boom and crew.

Watched it again recently and was shocked how good it is.
It's just a damn well made movie. It has wit, heart, great choreography and practical effects and does the best blend of the comic's more serious tone and the the lighter elements of the original show. It's has no right to be as great as it is. Easily a top 10 comic book movie for me.

I have a lot of nostalgia for The Secret of Ooze but don't remember liking the third one. I saw the first one years later.

The third one is dumb as fuck, Casey is the only saving grace. Why do the ninja turtles have fucking liver spots? Christ.

Got back a little bit ago. I'm not sure it was the new 4k scan, but it definitely looks better and cleaner than the original blu ray release. I always thought the blu ray was lazily done and overly grainy.

In any event, the kid liked it enough that we had to go buy a graphic novel and action figure afterwards. I'd call that a success.

Was able to catch a showing last weekend.
Question for those who also have seen the re-release did they show (at your screening) a pretty length "Preview" for a upcoming TMNT documentary (forgot the name), they showed some interesting deleted scenes from the MOVIE with commentary?

Was great to see the film on a big screen, some of the jokes and references might be missed by younger viewers... lol
