TEKKEN 7 |OT| How I killed your mother

My King play getting better. Buffering his giantswing from recovery still eludes me in fights, as I get the timing wrong most of the time. My wall game is getting better though, and I finally broke out of playing him like I was still using Josie.

I'm 168 pages late, but... nice thread.

Are there any guides out there on baiting whiffs and punishing into launchers out there?
edit - actually, scratch that first question.

edit - second question: Is there an agreed-upon good lever for Tekken 7? I kinda want to get into modding my stick, but idk where to even start.

I haven't kept up with this thread but is there any word on more matchmaking/netcode improvements for PS4? I hear PC works fine in this area.

I was tilting last night and could myself at Mentor. Came home after work and climbed up to Brawler.

Starting to learn the new characters tricks. That makes them easier to punish and counter.

Except Howarang. Eff that character. He has a kick so fast that he can just frame lock you forever.

Hmmm it is a little frustrating when you can't get people around your rank in ranked mode. I've won 10 straight in 7th dan after getting demoted and haven't gone back up yet because I'm going up against people +-2 ranks 😭

Ive heard good things about the Crown 309MJ and recently ordered one. Im not sure about the overall consensus for best levers tho.

Tiny bit of progress as I made up up to 6th kyu, lol.

Think I'm going to have to move on from Asuka and try someone else. I just get bodied by even greener newbies who straight rushdown. Defensive/counter focused characters generally don't work for me as I'm terrible at patience. Going to put in some more time with Katarina my next go around and see how I do online with her since she has easier combos.

LoL.

Hey, good to see ya.

Haha, JDCR complaining about 8 frames of input lag. Here we go again.

Very good that he does, Harada doesn't listen to mortals maybe he'll listen to JDCR. More and more players don't even want to play T7 PS4 due to input lag and that's tragic since PS was always core Tekken place.

Yeah, I normally can tolerate input lag since it's a universal thing, but I own both versions of the game and man the PS4 version feels like I'm moving in molasses by comparison. It's really hard to swap between the two.

Nah, what prevents smurfing is having to pay for PS+/Live or having to buy T7 for every account on Steam.

This is kind of overkill. How good I am with Lili is not a reflection of how good I am with Akuma. At all.

They removed it for a few days and then put it back for whatever reason.

Actually, it is kinda is a reflection, unless you're moving into a new, highly technical character.

There's way less difference between characters than SFV and MASSIVELY easier to switch than Guilty Gear.

If you reach 8th Dan the game puts all your other characters at 3rd Dan, this seems fair. If you lose you only fall down with that character, I see literally no problems with this.

Only King. That outfit was a crossover with New Japan Pro Wrestling, based on a real wrestler.

Said wrestler is fucking dope btw, and has had 2 legendary matches with Kenny Omega, the Bullet Club guy you've probably seen at tournaments.

I would pay good money for the same treatment for a Kenny x Bryan Fury crossover. One Winged Angel rage art would be insanely hype.

For all the fuck ups of Namco (on PS4 at least), I also think this is a great implementation, and wish other games could follow suit.

Yoo I was in my stride last night. After hitting blue rank the night before I got 3 promotions in a row on a 10 game win streak.

Then on what would have been the 4th in a row, faced up against a decent king and I shit you not I lost that promotion by a pixel of health. 2-2, both on 1% health and I accidentally crouch block his rage art attempt, when I'd blocked it every one of the previous rounds.

Gutted, but hype shit.

Then lost a couple against a good Bryan, before winning a few more before I logged off.

I can feel green ranks in my bones.

Edit: my actual face during that king rage art

So, I'm heavily into Street Fighter but I'm new to Tekken.

Where are some good places to start looking for information?
Is there no in-game tutorial?
I'm playing on PC.

There is no in-game tutorial. Yes it sucks. As mentioned, check out avoiding the puddle. For juggles, you can basically just type a character name into youtube and go from there. Try everyone in practice mode, attempt sample combos. Every character is viable so don't stress about tiers. Story mode is garbage, don't take gameplay lessons from there.

And forget everything you know from Street Fighter. Barely any of it is applicable other than general mind games. Strings suck, linking isn't a thing, crouching block will get you killed, sidesteps... exist. Some of it still applies to Akuma and Eliza, but the game has a very different logic overall. I'm constantly getting messages from SF players baffled as to why things aren't working for them, it's because it's totally different to almost all 2D games.

King Jae's been putting out some solid beginner's guides as well. I'd highly recommend new players do what I did and just pick a character and learn them. Practice movement and block punishing and look up your character's top moves as a good place to start. Then, once you think you have a decent handle on your character's moveset (can recognize a move if you see someone do it), watch some high level tournament play of your character.

There's this one dude on yt I'll have to look up for later who has hundreds of tourny vids organised into character specific playlists. Super helpful.

Starting to become frustrated with Ling.

She has NO quick launchers, no low strings that become launcher combo. d/f+2~1 is the most garbage launcher I've ever seen on a list. You will hit exactly NOBODY with how slow it is. Her most reliable launcher is SS+3 which most people will see coming a mile away (compare to Katarina or Bryan Fury's equivalent which do not require SS)

In fact, all her lows are really to get people ducking so they can eat mids.

The only reliable punisher she has is b+4,4

SS+3 is her only reliable low with knockdown. It used to be AOP 4~3, but either AOP does not duck under mids like it used to or everyone is using moves to hit her before 4~3 can come out.

Also, she doesn't have any combos that take off 50% plus health without wall splat. On the other hand, I've been taken from one side of the room to another with Kazumi , Jack, Leo, Katarina like my opponents are dialing combos in Killer Instinct.

You know how frustrating it is to get frame locked by jabs against Bryan Fury, Steve, or even Josie kicks? Ling has zero answers for that kind of stuff because everything she does needs setup/windup.

I've mained Link for years, but her weaknesses are glaring.

For Claudio, what are some good options for:

Wallsplat Combos (His BnB launcher combo is tough to do near the wall, for me at least)

Stage "Break" Combos (Still learning how to break stages, so knowing what to follow up with should I get it is throwing me off a bit)

???

Also I'm seriously considering halving the number of games I enter at EVO just to focus more on Tekken. I like it that much.

For stage break combos, just try some of your BnB combos minus the initial launcher.

I remember asking Harada about Tekken's input delay at Evo one year and he was clearly not happy to get that question. :x It's an issue that's all relative, and I think the PC version existing and having much lower input delay (I can block big lows... online?!?) makes it even more apparent than it was in the past.

WTF why does Xiaoyu's Tekken 4 hair option look so good? Why doesn't all the hair in this game look like that?
In general, the character-specific hair looks about 100x better than the generic parts. The real issue is that there aren't many examples of either (some characters don't have any specific hair parts, and the generic ones are both lacking and just bad).

Starting to become frustrated with Ling.
You really need to reevaluate how you're playing this character (or even if you're playing the right character).

For launchers, d/f2~1 comes out in 15 frames, which is bog standard for a d/f2 launcher speed-wise. That's not even counting things like AOP 1+2 or RDS 4, since you need to be in stance for those... but Ling has a whole bunch of ways to get into those stances. That's kind of the point of the character. And then there's her Rage Drive... fuuuuuuuuuuck that move. :V

You can use 1,d+2 as a 10-frame punish that then puts you into RDS (giving you a whole bunch more options), and SS 4 is a fast low that launches on CH that's not launch punishable on block. f+1+2 is 12 frames and can be used to punish -12 moves (natch). d/b+4 is another fast low that launches on CH and is not launch punishable on block. b+1 is the second fastest attack in the game (8 frames!) and makes for one hell of a panic button if someone is right in your face. It also puts you into RDS, so you can go right into another mixup.

Your complaint about her lows is... how lows work for nearly every damn character in this game. :p

It's possible that you're just not playing a character that's a good fit for you, though.

I've mained Link for years, but her weaknesses are glaring.

Ling is not really made for combos but her damage is better than it was in TTT2 and df+2~1 has decent enough reach. She also got standing 3 for a weaker combo, but it launches your opponent at -14 which is really good.
AOP also got some nice buffs. It still ducks under a lot of mids and still has a mini sidestep to her right. AOP 4~3 gets you in a very favorable position for oki.

SS+3 is slow and shouldn't be thrown out mindlessly. If you hold back she gets into RDS and can launch a ducking opponent with RDS 4 or RDS u/f+4. RDS 4 is -18 though, so basically everybody can launch you for it.
She got some nice low pokes as well. d+3 being really good, u/f+1 is also not bad to use at times and gets you into AOP. AOP+3 is her slide and is really good because her body stays very low and it launches on counterhit. Her rage drive is also a low launcher that is safe on block. In fact it's one of the best rage drives in the game.
SS+4 is also a decent CH launcher that is pretty fast.

In fact, the list goes on and on. Xiaoyu is the strongest she's been in years, you just have to dig deeper into her gameplay. She's not a heavy hitter but she can poke your opponent to death and mixes him up really good.

What are you guys using as a guide for T7? I know YouTube is a great place for character breakdowns. But I'm looking more for text breakdowns. I used to check the tekken zaibatsu forums but it seems pretty dead now.
