TEKKEN 7 |OT| How I killed your mother

Any general tips on dealing with string heavy characters getting into your face and then constantly using long strings? Mashing out is incredibly hard if you're not familiar with every string they have (and even then, I only get a couple of jabs out as a punish) and just blocking means I get slowly chipped out with lows.

Playing Jack-7 and I'm doing decently well against other things (for someone who's never played Tekken at least) but I'm having a real though time against this.
If people are abusing strings you can watch and see where the string hits high or low and duck or low block or parry accordingly the next time they use it

Are other people on PC getting frequent mid-match disconnects? Not seeing a lot of complaining about it here or on the steam forums so am concerned it's something to do with my connection. I'd say 20% or more of my matches disconnect.

Not on my end, do your opponents have good connections? Usually I seach for 4+ connection bars.

I'm on a 14 win streak on rank lol. There was this King player that just kept spamming his low kick attack, so I just gave him a taste of his own medicine to win.

Just got into 3 ranked matches on PS4. Got to the lobby. It might not show anyone but it will start sending you request after a couple of minutes. I went to take care of something around the house and left it there. Saw the time going down for the match and dove onto the couch to hit yes.
I have my platinum now. Woot!

Pfft people say go and play injustice if they want an ai simulator game, my Katarina is running house in treasure mode with turbo mode on the X button, you go girl!

Do you think I can customize Asuka to look like Sakura (SF)? Asuka has always been my fave character ever since she was introduced cause she reminded me of Sakura.

Okay so uhm, how the hell do you learn how to play this game? Is there really nothing like combo trial mode?

There is a combo trial mode, go to OFFLINE > PRACTICE than select your character, in the practice mode you can hit your options button and see the move list. Select a move and you can watch the computer perform it. At the bottom of the move list is some basic juggle combos too.

Or you can just pick characters like Katarina or Eddy Gordo, and just button mash and have fun. Lol

Also I've been trying to grab links for new players:

I hate it when people just pick different characters each time in a lobby. I don't learn anything and all you get to do is beat someone who isn't going to adapt in time.

Lol I know right? Best thing against unknown characters is try to universal back-dash to keep spacing of them away from you. If they come in, try to initiate first, and bulldog them, keeping them on the defensive.

And then most importantly go to practice mode, for those popular character you dont know how to defend against, go through their move list. Learn the character just a little bit. And its easy if you only look for any dangerous knock down lows. Because other lows are just CHIP damage dont worry about the chip damage so much. Worry more about knock down lows if the character has any. The rest of it is just standing up and blocking. Hope that helps.

I'm having trouble with Steve Fox's stance switching. I know some of the combos have hold forward or backwards after execution to switch stance but I'm still not that great at it. Any tips?

Best tip I have for Steve is be ready to react differently when your attacks *hit* as it will give you different options as you will have more timing to do other longer attacks or mixups.

His flicker arts are great especially the one that cause block stun. Also his 1,2,1 is a great initiator, good defensive and offense use. Good luck!

For my PS4 brothers out there doing online before the fix next week.

I've been getting tons of games, but only in lobby's. Don't know why, but lobby mode works for me.

Sometimes it glitchy and I wait 20 seconds for the room to load properly.

But I've been getting consistent games, games over and over and over in lobbies for the past couple of days.

Actually I like the lobbies better anyway, because MIC players get to talk to each other. So I've been chatting with folks all over the nation.

Good luck. :)

My connections are almost always 4+. When I've tried playing in tourneys my connection usually shows as 5 bars. I even tried assigning a static ip and setting a DMZ, same problem. It feels like it's getting worse; normally I can't finish a full game now, it'll disconnect before the end.

I play other online games fine. This is super, super frustrating, especially since the game itself is so damn fun and it's super smooth online (til it breaks). No other EU PC players experiencing similar?

So this guy King Jae on youtube has been uploading a "Beginner to Pro" series that's been pretty helpful to me as a beginner. The vids are around 15 minutes a piece and just have a bunch of really helpful stuff to get you practicing your character for people just starting out.

Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JxSzUSeYtkU

edit - I've been playing my brother's PS4 version, but I want to get in on the PC version myself. Are there any discounts still running? I know you could find Tekken 7 for $40...somewhere a couple of days ago.

edit edit - nevermind, I bought it full price

Most string have a sidestep break-point, where the opponent can side step the string and punish.

Good string players will try to stop a string early if they know they are playing against a good player.

Also Jack and all characters have at least one or two in-close panic attacks.

Also string characters eventually want to open you up by going low. Be ready to parry the low and punish them.

asuka isn't anything like Sakura truth be told. Even the lili and karin comparisons are suspect

Right, I forgot you can duck under highs. Does that generally let you interrupt the string with a WS punish or will the punish just get interrupted by the next move in the string?

I'm also wondering if there's a general way to tell what moves are + on block (besides looking at frame data)? Because some moves that totally look punishable as hell are actually + on block. Like, Jacks f, f+3 looks really punishable (and pretty much everyone I've played tries to punish it) but it has frame advantage. I know this is something you can learn from experience, but considering how few moves seem to be + on block I'm wondering if there's some kind of rule to it.

Also Jack and all characters have at least one or two in-close panic attacks.
I'm guessing that's f+2, since it seems to be the fastest move I have and knocks down on counterhit?

Other than Kasumi being a real MF'er to beat, I'm LOVING this game so far, and I though Injustice 2 was taking my Fighting GotY so far

Yes PS4 online is fucked after the first patch. It'll have to be fixed.

1-2-1 does feel really good for switching to flicker or peakaboo. I messed around with him in Training for the past 45 minutes or so and I get the stance switching now. Thank you very much!

I struggled with this too, it's definitely not random. Seems to have something to do with performing poorly. Try losing a bunch of times before reaching Heihachi.

Err... that is definitely not how one should go about learning the game, or a fighter in general.

First get comfortable with basic movement, blocking, defense etc.

You definitely don't need to learn all the moves or do them over and over in training mode. Just pick 3-5 moves that you like and stick to them for a while.

Do very basic combos first, don't bother with anything complex. Actually you may want to forget about them altogether in the beginning. Just get comfortable pressing buttons with your character.

You can do basic moves without combos. It isn't explaining everything, but I have no idea how they learn or what they'll pick up. Command moves can save someone in a tight situation. Say f,f+2 with Bryan or something

Yeah do what this post says.. learn the basics, but combos are usually #5 or #6 on the thing to learn. They're gonna come into play regardless and you'll eventually get combo'd in any match.

Learn how to move is probably the most important aspect.

I would learn how to block, roll, tech roll, jump punch, etc

Pressing punch (1 or 2) while on the ground rolls their direction. 3 for low kick wakeup and 4 for high/mid kick wakeup when you're on the ground. Sure, yeah learn those things

You could learn about b,b+3+4 or f,f+1+2 when on the ground and how not all characters have it. It's to jump or roll when getting back up from a knockdown.

You could learn how pressing 4 while running does a slide that is good if your opponent can't guard low and goes for a mid or high attack from far away.

Blocking is automatically a mid and high block if you're pressing nothing and you're not moving. Learn how to side step and walk around the character and the difference between the two. How dashing works, how running works, what each punch or kick does with a direction on the controller. How to throw, etc.

I DID get the pre-order bonus but for some reason the email never came. But as I queried Amazon they re-sent it. Good. Now I can get stuck in (tomorrow...after work).

(Yes F+2 is nasty from Flicker)

Yes you can do a WS to duck under highs and punish. Experienced players will do what's called instant-While-standing. You can basically get an WS move almost instantly. It's done by D,D/B,N. So basically as soon as the controller goes back to neutral is when you can get the while standing. Actually it's pretty easy to do.

Yes online PS4 works for all the time, however it's only in the lobbies. Quick match does not.

And I agree with you how good the game is, the game-play of Tekken has never been this DARN HOOTEN TOOTEN GOOD! I thought fighting games were dead to me, no longer, Tekken gots me back on the fighting train.

I believe you can only encounter Akuma or Kazumi as a boss in arcade mode, though you can have a special match with Jin in treasure battle.
I had a special battle with Kazumi in treasure hunt, first one I actually ever encountered. No luck with Akuma outside of arcade.

For those of you trying to get heist battles to trigger and aren't comfortable with your rank getting higher with a particular character (increasing the chances of losing the heist) I've found a potentially helpful method.

Starting fresh after a loss, if you then get on a win streak of 3-4 there seems to be a good chance that a special battle will trigger. Basically what you want to do is keep winning until you trigger a promotion at which point you throw that match and another afterwards. After that, you then won't be given a promotion match for another 5-6 wins which gives a chance for the special battle to trigger. Rinse and repeat.

It's not foolproof - sometimes you don't trigger a special battle at all, and the chances of it being a heist are average at best (double damage seems common, speed pretty rare), plus obviously you're screwing up your W/L ratio. But, if like me, you want costume A or rainbow hair for a character that you're almost at your limit with, you can use this to maintain rank, ensure you can win the heist, and still trigger the win streak needed for heists to show up. I used that to finally get the rainbow hair for Lucky Chloe after having no luck with the Katarina turbo method.

We need a photo mode.

Wow, ps4 looking much worse than I expected, why is it so muddy and why are the aura particles squares instead of circles?

Ok thanks, glad to rule out my side, I had some issues with USF2 on switch as well, so made me think it was my end

What's this bullshit with the entire tournament lobby closing down if the opponent leaves, even when I was hosting the tournament..

I made it to the finals in this second tournament I played, beat the guy in the first round and he just left. That threw me out to the menu with no rewards or anything. =/

So what's everyone's thoughts on the newbies? This feels like the biggest influx of new blood in quite some time but in terms of first impressions, only Claudio is really calling out to me.

Happens every time I win a match.

Edit: Also, I'm not too familiar with double elimination brackets. Does the loser bracket winner have to win 2 matches in the final?

Are you getting perfects or any rage art KOs?

Playing through it with normal KOs, but I had one round lost to Heihachi and I got her.

You can also fight Jin instead of Heihachi, but I'm not sure how to trigger that.

Josie is the GOAT of course, no more needs to be said.

Lucky Chloe is one of the best newcomers in years.

Claudio is way too cool as this sorcerer.

Kazumi oozes class and her design is beautiful.

I mean, I'm really liking all of the newcomers.

Thanks, this is pretty helpful. At least I have a general plan for dealing with strings now (duck and punish highs, try to parry lows, try to find a place to sidestep) so I'm not just sitting there taking hits.

Yeah you can duck and punish or even launch
If you are using Jack you can react with WS 2 and launch them for combo

Not bothering with frames and not knowing what what's + or can be punished you can just check with a jab to see.
Or use your fastest punishes like f+2 and 2,1. As long as you don't get frame trapped
